    The Cat Saw It!

    Welcome to The Cat Saw It!, a fanfiction challenge dedicated to crack ships and rare pairings: the stranger, the better. Love but Complicated

    Love is rarely simple. Sometimes it’s messy, confusing, poorly timed, or indistinguishable from obsession, loyalty, or something else entirely. If that sounds like your kind of story, we have good news.

    From February 1st to February 15th, we’re inviting you to take part in our new writing contest: Love but Complicated.

    This contest is all about exploring relationships that don’t fit neatly into a box. Romantic or not-so-romantic, mutual or one-sided, healthy or questionable — if it makes readers stop and wonder “what exactly is this?”, you’re doing it right.

    How to Participate as an Author

    ✍️ Write a story with a minimum of 700 words.

    ✍️ Choose one of the 7 official prompts — or more than one, if inspiration strikes!

    ✍️ Base your work on the selected prompt(s) in any way you like.

    You’re free to interpret the prompts creatively. Twist them, subvert them, combine them, or take them somewhere unexpected. As long as the story is rooted in the idea of love being complicated, you’re on the right track.

    ❤️ The Prompts ❤️

    • “They love you. They just won’t save you.” Explore love that has limits.
    • “A love letter that was never meant to be read.” Not necessarily romantic. Could be a report, a journal, or an unsent message.
    • “The last person who should understand you… does.” Connection between unlikely characters.
    • “This isn’t jealousy. It’s something worse.” Examine possession, fear of replacement, or moral conflict.
    • “Two people agree never to name what this is.” And stick to it.
    • “Love expressed through refusal.” Saying no as an act of care.
    • “A promise that shouldn’t have been made.” But was.

    📖 Readers Get a Say Too 📖

    This time, the spotlight isn’t just on the writers. You can leave a comment answering one simple but deceptively tricky question: “Was it love or something else?”. Show your support and engage into discussions!

    🎁 Prizes and Rewards 🎁

    We believe effort deserves to be rewarded — whether you’re writing or reading.

    🎁 A unique participation gift for every author!

    🎁 Extra gift + 100 coins for 5 top-voted authors!

    🎁 A special gift for... Readers who comment!

    Yes, reading counts. Commenting counts. Everythings counts in right amounts!

    If you enjoy stories that blur the line between affection and confusion, devotion and denial, or love and something that refuses to be named, this contest is for you!

    Love but Complicated

    RULES:

    ✅ Each work must contain a minimum of 700 words;

    ✅ Each work must be based on one of the 7 prompts;

    ✅ Please, put the prompt that you used in the Notes;

    ✅ Translations are allowed if you’re the original author and your work fits the narrative;

    ✅ Each work must be a new one, (i.e., not published on FicFan previously);

    ✅ It is prohibited to publish works that violate the Rules of our website;

    ✅ To get a Reader's gift you'll have to read any work (or works!) and comment, answering the question "Was it Love or Something else?";

    🚫 No AI;

    🚫 Don’t publish anything that violates the Rules of the website.

    So, let's buckle up our seat-belts and asnwer the question that is on everyone's mind: Was it Love or something else?

    🎄Are you Naughty or Nice this year? 🎄

    Get ready to end the year with a burst of creativity! From December 24 to December 30, writers are invited to participate in the “Naughty or Nice?” contest — a festive challenge where you choose your path: sweet or mischievous.

    ✨ The Nice List — wholesome, uplifting, gentle ideas.

    😈 The Naughty List — chaotic, mischievous, rule-breaking ideas.

    Naughty or Nice?

    Your choice determines your reward: use a prompt from Nice List to get a Nice Gift and a prompt from Naughty List to get a Naughty Gift. And if you're feeling greedy (and we don't blame you!) and want to get both gifts, then write two separate works, each based on a prompt from a different list!

    NewNoWriMo 2025 is over!

    As November comes to a close and the whirlwind of NewNoWriMo settles, we want to take a moment to say something simple, but deeply felt: thank you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for writing, whether it was a sentence, a chapter, or a full novel. Thank you for trusting us to accompany you through this adventure.

    This was our very first time hosting a NewNoWriMo event, and we couldn’t have asked for a kinder, more inspiring community to share the journey with. Every story, every update, every moment of enthusiasm helped shape this experience into something meaningful.

    As we grow and improve, your perspective matters enormously. If you have a moment, we would love to hear your thoughts about the event. Your feedback will help us make next year even more special.

    Feedback Form

    Now that NaNoWriMo is officially over, it’s the perfect time to take a breath, look at what you’ve built, and begin the next step of the journey: polishing, editing, and sharing your work with the world. If you haven’t posted your project yet, consider this your invitation. Your story deserves to be read.

    Readers, your role isn’t over either. This is a wonderful moment to explore the NaNoWriMo tag, discover fresh works from the challenge, and support the authors who poured their time and heart into their November writing.

    Thank you, again, for being with us and sharing your ideas, your stories, and the worlds you created!

    November Update: It’s NewNoWriMo Time!

    So... It has begun!

    Dramatic music is still playing somewhere but we don't have enough time or patience for that, do we? We have a novel to write! A 50k words novel, to be exact.

    This month is the month of NewNoWriMo, that is why we decided to take a break from our tradition of monthly prompts. Let's dive headfirst into that big story idea you’ve been holding onto, whether it’s an original novel, or a longfic.

    Here’s how you can join in this month:

  • Add you work for everyone to see!
  • Share your progress and snippets in Blogs — let’s celebrate every milestone!
  • Drop words of encouragement for fellow writers. A kind message might be the nudge someone needs to keep going.
  • Post updates or excerpts using the tag #NewN0WriMo so everyone can find and support your work.
  • NewNoWriMo!

    Masquerade of Shadows Has Already Begun!

    🎃 Welcome to the Masquerade of Shadows! 🎃

    The event has officially started, and now you can join in with your own work! Head over to the Contest section and add your entry to join the fun.

    To the Masquerade!

    You can vote once a day for one of the submissions (but not your own), leave comments, and give likes to support the authors. Remember — readers who aren’t shy about showing their support will be rewarded!

    Your submission can be an original story or a fanfiction — any fandom, any genre is welcome! The rules are simple: at least 700 words, featuring any mystical creature of your choice and one of the cursed objects from the list. The object just needs to be mentioned; it doesn’t have to be central to your story (and it doesn’t even need to be cursed, actually!).

    🎃 The Cursed Objects 🎃

    • A broken mirror
    • A candle that won’t stay lit
    • A crimson mask
    • A letter sealed with black wax
    • A wilted flower
    • A music box that plays on its own
    • A key that opens any door

    Unique gifts await — along with a handful of coins — for those who decide to join the fun! The Masquerade of Shadows has begun!
