Words This week: 5,028 Total Words: 22,818 Words Left: 27,182 Thought I didn't make the 50,000, this challenge was a good exercise, and I will be taking part in it next year. Since I am planning to have this story published as a full-on novel, I will not be updating this version, but I will keep on working on Project Achilles privately, and the story I posted here will still be public. As a Love and Deepspace craziest fangirl I still can't believe I managed to write something that has been swirling in my mind for so long. "The King's Petals" can be considered as one of those ideas I truly strived to bring to life. It wasn’t easy... I won’t hide that. There were even tears when I couldn’t express what I wanted in the language I’ve been studying for nearly my entire conscious life. I write very slowly, so I wasn’t able to fully unfold most of my thoughts. Maybe that’s reason enough to write a sequel? The most important parts, the wedding and the coronation, remains unexplored by me. I regret not giving it the time it deserved. But still... I’m proud of myself. I'm currently trying to wrap up all the outstanding chapters of my works (save two) and I cranked out 7k today. I'm at the point where the chapters were barely started, 1000 words or less. So the fact I cranked out 7k for just two chapters today shows how much work I put into my stories. I wrote for probably close to 4 hours today. My main goal this month was just to do 10k, because I knew I couldn't do 50k. I lowered the word count to something that I knew would be manageable for me. I definitely hit the 10k goal today and I'll see how much I can crank out tomorrow lol. Read more

Busy week

It has been a busy work and school week. I did get a chance to write some today, and I'm now at 4400 words. I need to step back and gather up the cast of characters I've made up on the spot while writing and give them some backstory. I also need to create a short summary of each "chapter" I have read so I can track what I have done, and where I need to go. I had a list of 18 scenes to start the monthly challenge with, and I've written 3 of them, and created one out of whole cloth. I am inventing a lot and it's hard to juggle that plus homework, plus work work, plus everything else. I made progress tonight, that's the key piece. Read more

Alright, I made it to day 2 of this challenge. Day 2 of me writing, Day 3 of the event. The "on target" number for words is 5,007 (1667 * 3). I'm sitting at 3,669. Ahead of where I should be for day 2, behind where I should be for day 3. It was a long day at work, then school. Sat down on this new format with my world in my mind, and the words flowed out. 20,000+ in 1 day. Need to go back and work on the flow, breaking up some of the areas to allow the reader time to digest (a great piece of feedback from someone here). The story keeps unfolding in my mind like an epic movie. How do you take what you imagine and find the correct words to convey it? Separate scenes are unfolding, and I think I'm switching between them effectively without losing the reader. Not much confidence in that thought. Morning all, I have always been a talker and storyteller, and after my husband's surgery, I took up writing to support his recovery. He suffered aphasia, and we needed therapy to improve his word recall. So the worst speller in history started writing down her thoughts. I entered a short story writing contest last month, and to my surprise, my style was well-received. Didn't win, but the stories have just kept coming. I found this site by accident, a link to read another writer's story. So here I am writing the great Canadian novel. The beginning

Writing books has always been something that other people did. After some pretty major life changes for the better, I began to think that perhaps I could write a book. It started with me contemplating writing a memoir to leave behind for my children. That quickly morphed into this harebrained idea of writing a fictional novel. Having raised a daughter who has been world building since high school, I leaned on her expertise on the subject and she pointed me to a series of lectures by Brandon Sanderson on creative writing given at my alma mater, BYU. I devoured the series and was endlessly amused that I had sat in that same lecture hall on more than one occasion. I began to plan and brainstorm. I read about the snowflake method. I started going to a local Shut up and Write! group. In the lecture series, Sanderson suggests we give ourselves permission to write a bad book. Story telling and writing is just like any other human pursuit, it requires practice. So, taking his advice, I have given myself permission to write a bad book. I am still unconvinced I can actually do this. I wanted to have so much more prepared before 11/1. So, I will be pantsing this thing far more than I wanted to. I have always wondered what would happen if I woke up tomorrow and computers no longer worked. As a software engineer, this is the stuff of my nightmares. That is the question I'm trying to explore here. Early as I started to brainstorm, I started to think of how many fantasy novels are set in a world in which there existed an ancient, advanced, and long since dead, civilization. As I began to brainstorm, I connected these dots, and from it came the idea for the book which I have given myself permission to write poorly. How can the world in which we live, become that ancient, advanced civilization of a fantasy setting? I spent all of 11/1 arguing with myself whether I should actually begin. Here I am on 11/2, still unsure, but a day behind. I do not know if I will blog more, or if I will complete this challenge. I do know that I will start. So here I am, about to embark on a journey into the unknown and uncertain. Read more

It feels good to be back into the habit of writing. Truly, it is. This tale I'm writing is something I've been writing since 2002. That year, I discovered the magic of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Later on that same summer, my online research of Zelda led to the world of FanFiction. Without my love for video games, I don't think I'd be a writer today...and now it's time for me to finally continue making a series I began nearly two decades ago. I'm working on a novel inspired by but not directly connected to my favorite movie, and it's a story based on my own life, so for sure this year will be a fun one, at least.
