Chapter 33

Settings
Jay I was flying down the corridor at breakneck speed, barely seeing the path ahead. I think I nearly knocked a couple of people off their feet, but nothing mattered to me right now. The only thing that mattered was reaching my baby as fast as possible. I burst into the room just a second before Ten. The moment I saw her pale face, I rushed straight to her, grabbing her ice-cold hands in mine and looking into my beloved doe’s frightened eyes. Ten entered the room just a few moments later and froze behind my back. Even though I could feel his murderous gaze on the back of my head, I honestly didn’t care. All my attention was focused on Rose. “Darling, what’s wrong? What happened?” I exhaled raggedly, pulling her closer and trying to understand what was going on. “I… I don’t know,” Rose whispered almost inaudibly, looking at me lost and confused. She guiltily bit her lip. “Everything was fine just a moment ago, but then… suddenly my head started spinning and my chest felt tight…” Hearing that, I frowned. I gently brushed the light strands of hair away from her face and turned to the nurse standing nearby. “Jisoo, what do we have on blood pressure and heart rate?” “Blood pressure is slightly lowered and there’s mild tachyarrhythmia,” the brunette replied more calmly. “But a few minutes ago Rose’s heart rate reached 150 beats per minute.” I took a sharp breath, closing my eyes for a second, then pulled Rose closer. I softly kissed her forehead and whispered: “God, baby… you scared me so much… Why did you get so worked up that your pulse shot through the roof?” “I was just… worried… about you,” my girl whispered barely audibly and smiled shyly, biting her lip. “Why, baby?” I gently stroked her cheek, fighting the urge to press my lips to her beloved velvety ones right in front of everyone and not caring that the others in the room were completely unnecessary right now. “I was afraid Ten would kill you when he found out you’re now my… husband,” Rose shrugged. Seeing that she was already feeling better, I let out a choked laugh and shook my head, feeling the weight lift from my heart. “Silly girl…” I whispered tenderly, stroking my happiness’s soft hair. “I told you I’d handle everything. It’s about time you learned to trust me,” I added with gentle reproach, running my hand down her fragile back and possessively pulling her closer. In that moment, I suddenly realized with horrifying clarity that… I could lose her at any second. My heart froze for a moment, skipping a beat, but started beating again the instant I felt Rose’s gentle little hands on my shoulders. She hugged me, sighed softly, and went still against my chest with her eyes closed — as if only in my arms did she feel completely safe and at peace. But peace was only a dream. I was reminded of that again when the cause of her anxiety sat down on the bed on the other side of Rose and rudely pulled her away from me, redirecting her attention to himself. “How are you feeling, baby?” Ten asked worriedly, pulling his sister to him with the same possessive gesture I had just used. Rose sighed and buried her face in his neck. “Not great, Tenny…” she honestly admitted. It wasn’t surprising with such tachycardia. Fortunately, it wasn’t critical. However, judging by the murderous look Ten shot at me, he thought otherwise. And here we go… “Look what you’ve done?! She got worse! Because of you!” he spat through clenched teeth. Rose’s eyes widened in shock. She whispered quietly: “Ten, what are you saying…?” She squeezed his hand, trying to calm him, but Ten was already on a roll. “I know exactly what I’m saying, Rose! And I know who’s to blame for your condition worsening. Your husband… knows it too!” Unfortunately, there was truth in his words, and I understood it perfectly. So I didn’t even resist when Ten strode over to me, grabbed me by the collar, yanked me to my feet, and slammed my back against the nearest wall. He hissed: “This is all your fault! Rose’s condition was stable yesterday, but today it got worse because of your stupid stunt! She shouldn’t have left the clinic! She shouldn’t have missed her IV drips! She shouldn’t have fucked you!” “Ten!!!” Rose’s frightened voice rang out across the room, echoing off the walls, but he seemed not to hear her. I clenched my jaw as he shook me hard and growled, staring straight into my eyes with a gaze darkened by rage and pain: “If my sister… dies because of you, I will never forgive you. Do you understand?! Never!!!” “Ten, stop! He’s not to blame for anything! I wanted this myself, do you hear me?!” Rose exclaimed. She jumped out of bed and rushed toward me to protect me from her brother’s wrath. Our eyes met. I wanted to reassure her that everything was okay, but… what happened in the next moment became forever etched in my memory as the most terrifying nightmare I had ever witnessed. After taking one more step, Rose suddenly pressed her hand to her chest, let out a muffled groan of pain… and began to fall. I reacted on pure instinct. Shoving Ten aside, I lunged toward her and managed to catch her at the last second. I pulled her tightly against me and whispered frantically: “Rose! Rose, my love, what’s wrong?!” She convulsively gripped my wrist, holding onto me with the last of her strength. Her huge, wide-open eyes stared at me as her bluish lips whispered almost soundlessly: “It hurts, Jay… so much… It hurts so much… I can’t… I can’t breathe… I…” I already knew what was happening. She was suffocating, desperately gasping for air. My own heart clenched with wild, primal terror as I realized what was going on. I shouted to Jisoo, who had rushed over: “Hook her up to oxygen, now! Prepare a cordiamine IV! Blood pressure, pulse — I need numbers, right now!” The nurse rushed to carry out my orders while Ten ran to the cardiac monitor to connect Rose to it. My own pulse thundered in my temples as I listened to Jisoo’s tense voice: “Blood pressure 100 over 60 and dropping. Pulse is thready. Possible atrial fibrillation.” Pressing the oxygen mask to her deathly pale face, I frantically stroked Rose’s hair and whispered: “Just a moment, my love… it’ll get easier soon… I promise… Hold on, my good girl… just hold on a little longer…” Rose looked at me, trying to say something, and squeezed my hand with her ice-cold fingers while the cordiamine slowly entered her bloodstream. I had already started to believe that everything would be alright, but suddenly… Her eyes closed. Her slender fingers slipped from my wrist. The tense silence of the room was shattered by the continuous flatline tone of the cardiac monitor. And in that same instant, my heart clenched in horror… and then stopped. Along with hers.
