Chapter 32

Jay
Following Ten down the hospital corridor, I could only see his unnaturally straight back, which betrayed all his anger and tension. I perfectly understood how he felt, but all my thoughts were still with Rose. I was worried about her almost more than Ten was. Even though she had assured me that she felt wonderful, my heart was still uneasy.
I knew exactly what her brother was going to say to me.
That I was a reckless idiot who had dared to put his beloved sister’s life at risk for my own selfish whim. But I already knew that. I knew I was taking a huge risk, but I had consciously gone through with it… because I couldn’t do otherwise.
Rose had asked me to give her this gift, knowing she might not live to see her next birthday. And I… understood that too, even though I desperately didn’t want to entertain the thought. But time was passing, no suitable donor had been found, and my girl’s condition was slowly but relentlessly deteriorating. So I decided… I would give her what she asked for.
I had never been able to refuse her anything before — all it took was for her to look at me with those huge, innocent doe eyes. And now, when my beloved was hanging by a thread and the only thing she wanted was me, I simply couldn’t say no to her… I just couldn’t.
But… if only she knew how hard it had been for me to agree to this crazy plan…
Yesterday evening I was a complete mess. Even though I tried to appear confident and calm, I was far more nervous than she was…
…Still, the way her eyes sparkled when she realized she would finally have me all to herself told me better than any words that I had done the right thing.
Now I just had to convince her stern brother of that. Though I understood it was unlikely I’d succeed.
We entered the empty doctors’ lounge. As soon as the door closed behind us, Ten spun around, clenched his fists, and spat through gritted teeth:
“Have you completely lost your fucking mind?!”
“Ten, listen…” I began, but it was obvious he wasn’t going to let me speak. He interrupted me angrily:
“Did you fuck her?!”
I exhaled sharply, closing my eyes for a moment and clenching my teeth so I wouldn’t tell him exactly where to go. I was starting to get worked up too, even though I understood he had every right to be furious and yell at me. I tried to pull myself together, clenched my fists, and said coldly:
“Don’t you think you’re sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong, Ten? This is none of your business!”
Ten just let out a contemptuous snort, crossing his arms over his chest and giving me an icy stare.
“You’re wrong, McFell! Everything that concerns my sister is my business, whether you like it or not.” He paused. “But I can already see the whole picture. There’s only one thing I don’t understand… Are you a complete idiot?!”
And so it began…
I opened my mouth to put him in his place and remind him that I wasn’t five years old anymore and wouldn’t let anyone lecture me like a naughty kindergartener, but Ten wasn’t finished. Clenching his fists with barely contained rage, he stepped closer and growled:
“How could you, Jay?! How could you do something so stupid?! What the hell were you thinking with?! Clearly not your head — definitely another part of your body! I know you’re a hot-tempered playboy, but for fuck’s sake, how could you risk her life like that?! It’s one thing for Rose — she doesn’t fully understand how serious her condition is. But you! You’re a doctor, damn it! You know better than anyone that she should be in the clinic under 24-hour supervision because her heart… could stop at any moment!”
His accusing, cold words sliced through my heart like a sharp blade. I took a ragged breath, acknowledging that he was right. But he didn’t let me get a word in. He exhaled loudly, turned away, and ran his hands through his hair as he walked over to the window, clearly trying to calm down so he wouldn’t punch me in a fit of emotion.
(Though if I were in his place, that’s exactly what I would have done.)
“Ten, I…” I started quietly, but he waved his hand, making it clear he didn’t want to hear anything, and said hoarsely:
“God, I nearly went insane this morning when I arrived and found out Rose wasn’t in her room… What was I supposed to think, huh?”
He glanced at me over his shoulder with a heavy look full of pain and anxiety for his sister. At that moment, I felt like the lowest scum on earth.
“Ten, I’m sorry,” I finally breathed out. Just like him, I nervously ran my fingers through my hair. “I know how you feel. I know how much you love Rose and how worried you are about her. Believe me, I love her just as much. Actually… I love her more than life itself. I would never put Rose in danger. But neither I nor my wife regret what happened yesterday, no matter how angry you are.”
Hearing this, Ten went pale and spun around sharply, eyes flashing.
“What did you just say?!”
I met his gaze without flinching.
“You heard me. Rose became my wife today.”
“Your… wife?..” His eyes widened in shock, then narrowed threateningly. He stepped closer and hissed, “Now I see you’ve completely lost your mind! Do you even hear yourself?! So you took her out of the clinic for almost a whole day just to fuck her and then drag her to the altar? Knowing what condition she’s in?!”
I clenched my fists, feeling a strong urge to make him take his words back.
What had happened between me and Rose was the most beautiful thing that had ever happened in my life. It didn’t deserve his crude description. I said coldly through gritted teeth:
“Watch your mouth, Ten! You have no idea what’s going on between me and Rose. Even the fact that you’re her brother doesn’t give you the right to talk like that. So shut up before I mess up that pretty face of yours!”
But Ten only let out a mocking snort.
“Rose might not stay your wife for very long thanks to your idiotic stunt and your inability to keep your dick in your pants!”
That was the final straw. Red flashed before my eyes. I stepped toward him with the firm intention of shutting him up for good, but suddenly the communicator on the table beeped and Jisoo’s anxious voice came through the speaker:
“Doctor, we need you urgently in room number three! Your sister is feeling bad! Doctor Ten, can you hear me?!”
It felt like time had suddenly frozen, stopping along with my heart, only to then race forward at triple speed. The floor seemed to drop out from under my feet.
Ten and I exchanged a single look and, without a word, rushed to the door.
