When the bell rings, she grabs her and Robby’s test paper from her locker and prepares to go back to Miss Thavel’s class to tell her about her mistake. She stops.
“Would she even care? She didn’t feel guilty. Even if she didn’t try to kill me, would Miss Grace even punish her? She knew about these killings and didn’t do anything about them. Nothing would change if she told either of them. If those bullies are the ones who did this, then they’ll get away with it just like how they got away with killing Claire. ” RUBY thinks.
She leaves, going back to her garage with Riley to study. Keith/O stays at the school for a meeting with Miss Grace.
RUBY (Internally): Cubbie said they’d ask Mrs. Amina about the password. Did she really trust Kevin that little? *She looks at the phone while attempting to think of what to do. * It’s a PIN code. How am I supposed to find this?
*She decides to wait for Cubbie to ask Mrs. Amina 30 minutes later, Cubbie sends a text. RUBY gives Riley some science notecards as she checks the text.*
Cubbie’s text:
“Mrs. Amina couldn’t find the password. I’m studying with Petunia and Lizzy.”
*Riley manages to get half of the cards correctly. She saw RUBY checking the phone and how sour her expression was when she couldn’t figure out what to do. “She’s really trying to help me. What can I do to help? I can’t stay on the street. … “ Riley thinks. She tries to think of someone who can help. “None of the teachers would know about technology. Even if they did, only Mister Demi and Miss Emily would want to help. Oliver/K wouldn’t want to. ∆lice wouldn’t either. ” Riley thinks. “Oliver/K wouldn’t want to tell me. But … Keith/O knows what they do. I can ask them.” Riley and RUBY finish studying and Riley starts to leave. *
RUBY: I just wanted to know when I could visit.
Riley: Tomorrow. I don’t want to make you walk back to your garage. Bye, RUBY. *Riley leaves. *
*After the school bell rings and everyone leaves, Miss Grace returns to her office, sits down, and looks at Keith/O. When she looks at them, she almost mistakes them for Oliver/K. The spiked legs are shaped to look like shoes. Their mouth had become visible and the black substance that looked like tears had receded, making them look like the person that they mimicked. Despite this, there were some differences. The scars on the pencil and arms were still present, but made smaller. Healed over quickly. Another quality copied from them. The “shoes” have small spikes protruding and receding from them. *
Miss Grace: Keith/O, I don’t appreciate you staying in the school. Don’t come back.
Keith/O: C’mon, isn’t there something I can do? *Miss Grace doesn’t show her surprise. They haven’t spoken like this before. * I AM Oliver/K. I could tell you some info about myself if you let me stay.
Miss Grace (Internally): Need to check if they’re bluffing.
Miss Grace: … What do you know about Connor? Neither him, nor Oliver/K told me about him.
Keith/O: They had a crush on me.
Miss Grace: Are you Keith/O or Oliver/K?
Keith/O: I'm Keith/O. They have a crush on Oliver/K. I just - I'll specify when I'm referring to them.
Miss Grace: Anything else?
Keith/O: They used to babysit Claire alongside Oliver/K. I'm referring to the other one.
*”That’s something I haven’t heard of before.” Miss Grace thinks. *
Miss Grace: What does Oliver/ - do you know about ∆lice? Does she have any weaknesses?
Keith/O: I don’t recall any weaknesses. They did lose to someone named Agetha once.
Miss Grace: Where are they?
Keith/O: They’re at this music bar I went to.
Miss Grace: Interesting. You can stay.
*Once the meeting is over, Keith/O goes back to Riley’s kitchen. They get there before Riley does.
They pick up the flowers that Riley had brought in. The act of kindness contrasts with the vile comments Oliver/K made about them. They hope that she can find someone who’ll return those feelings. Someone who won’t hurt her. *
Keith/O: (Internally): I should have asked about whether I looked like th- my- … Them. I need to look similar, Where can I - *They check the various rooms to try and find a reflective surface. They enter the freezer, although, it’s not cold anymore. All the food had been removed from it, but they only need the metal door. They look at themselves using the reflection from the metal. They change their eye shape. They try to stop the black substance, but they can’t remove it. The spikes that protrude from the boots are next. -*
*Riley enters the kitchen, alerting Keith/O once the door closes. They exit the freezer to meet Riley. *
Riley: You look more like Oliver/K. Why are you so insistent on being like them?
Keith/O: Why wouldn’t I want to be like me? I’d rather be like them than be me - I mean them.
Riley: Alright. Could you help me with something? I need someone to help me find Kevin's password for his phone. Since you have access to Oliver/K’s memories, could you see if they know anyone?
Keith/O: Agetha could find the password, but they would not want to help. Thank you for giving me those flowers.
*Riley goes to her room. *
