In the morning, Carol was already up. The strange dream came rushing back. “Hey girl,” she said as I stepped out of the bathroom. “Good morning.” “I wish I could say it was good.” “Why? Got a nasty case?” Carol shook her head, yawning. “Just exhausted. It was a late night.” My pulse quickened. “Was it? I thought you got in and crashed shortly after I did.” “No. God no. It wasn’t till close to two before I finally got home.” A cold sweat broke over me. “You okay?” she asked. “Yeah, yeah. I just didn’t sleep well. Had some strange dreams. I’m fine.” Carol kissed me and rushed off to work. I went downstairs. Carol said goodbye to Brynn, who sat at the table eating toast and reading something on her phone. I avoided looking at Brynn as I made coffee. “Sleep well?” she asked. My body stiffened. “I guess so.” “You guess?” I nodded. “Just some weird dreams. Where’s Jenny?” “She slept at her sister’s last night.” The mug almost slipped from my hand. “Her sister’s baby was born, and she wanted to be there for her since she’s single.” My mind spun. Carol had worked late. Jenny wasn’t home. No. No, it can’t be! Please tell me Brynn didn’t actually drug me! I forced myself to face her. “Oh wow. Good for her. Everything go okay?” “Healthy baby boy.” Her gaze felt like it could see straight into my mind. I dismissed my paranoia. Even if Brynn were attracted to me, why would she do such a thing? Because she simply wouldn’t. Right?
