At the end of the day, I rode home hoping Carol would be there but she wasn’t. Neither were Brynn or Jenny. At first I didn’t think much of it. We all came and went at random times. But then the sun began to set and I started to worry. I texted Carol, surprised she hadn’t updated me. Even with her erratic schedule, she always kept me informed so I wouldn’t worry. When you don’t hear from someone in law enforcement for too long, horrible possibilities fill your head. Finally, I heard the garage door open. Please be Carol,I prayed. Heard from Carol or Jenny?” She shook her head, placing things on the kitchen counter. “It’s getting awfully late, don’t you think?” “Well, Jenny is still with her sister, and I believe Carol had to go to Kodiak on a case.” “Yeah, she mentioned Kodiak but didn’t know for sure. If that’s where she is, why didn’t she tell me?” “Don’t know, hun. I’m not her mother. I’m sure everything’s fine.” But I doubted that. She could have taken ten seconds to send a text.
