Once the others settled in, my feelings were mixed. I definitely felt safer with two cops in the house instead of one, but at the same time, I wished I had more time alone. Jenny and I returned from a shopping mall one day and found Brynn lounging on the couch. Carol had gone off on a call. Jenny excitedly explained we’d found awesome summer dresses. “Oh, good for you,” Brynn said, not sounding remotely excited. Jenny insisted we change into them to show Brynn. “It’s not like she’ll never see us wearing them anyway, but okay,” I said. A few minutes later, we returned in our new, somewhat form-fitting dresses. Hers was purple, mine royal blue. “Tada!” Jenny said. Brynn’s eyes flicked between us, lingering longer on me. I wondered if Jenny noticed. “Of course it’s not fair,” Jenny said, patting my arm. “This one has a Victoria’s Secret body.” I felt myself blush—something I didn’t feel often. Brynn smiled slightly and rolled her eyes as we ran upstairs to change back into sweats. I was usually pretty good at knowing where I lacked and where I did well, and even I could honestly see that I was better looking in both body and face compared to Jenny. But that didn’t mean Jenny was ugly. She had decent enough features and was only a few pounds overweight. Yet I’d overheard some guy at the precinct tell Carol and Brynn how lucky they were to have a “sexy blonde” and a “cute redhead,” and sometimes I almost felt like Jenny resented me for it. Maybe she was a bit jealous. I wasn’t curious enough to ask. I just wish she’d compare us less.
