Chapter 52

Settings
Three days had passed since our conversation and Jay’s promise to take me to Namsan Mountain. He still came every night and stayed until morning, warming me with the heat of his embrace, but I no longer asked when the long-awaited X-day would come, even though I was already dying of impatience. At the same time, I couldn’t help but notice my worsening condition. Although the therapy continued as usual, I tried not to show it, so my beloved husband wouldn’t notice how bad I felt and, God forbid, change his mind about keeping his promise. *** The evening of the fourth day crept up almost unnoticed — perhaps because I felt especially unwell that day. Maybe my body was simply tired of all the medication being pumped into it, but most likely… my heart was already starting to fail. However, toward evening I finally felt a little better. And when Jay arrived around eight, my mood could truly be called excellent. The moment I saw him in the doorway of my hospital room, I reached out to him without words, showing how much I had missed him. He didn’t hesitate for a second. In just a few steps he closed the distance between us, sat down on my bed, and pulled me into his warm, cozy embrace — the one where I always felt at home. “Hello, sweetheart,” he whispered with a smile into my hair, stroking my back. “Darling… You’re finally here…” I let out a loud sigh and burrowed even deeper into his arms, unwilling to let go of my happiness, which had been wandering around somewhere all day again… or sleeping in a closet in the on-call room. I quietly smirked to myself at this silly thought that popped into my head and took a deep breath, filling my lungs with his scent as I pressed my cold nose into his warm neck. Jay shivered slightly and stroked the back of my head, whispering with a smile: “I missed you too, Bambi.” I rubbed my nose against his shoulder and mumbled into it: “Do you think the head doctor would agree to make you my personal doctor only and give all your other patients to someone else?” Hearing this, Jay laughed, his warm breath ruffling the hair on top of my head, and asked with a smile: “Missed me that much?” “Insanely…” I confessed with a sigh, hugging my husband even tighter and slipping my hands under his open snow-white coat. “I can’t be without you, my love… I need your strength… and your warmth… I need all of you, all the time…” “I’m yours, baby.” He exhaled raggedly and pulled me even closer, literally pressing me against himself. I sighed in satisfaction, finally having him all to myself, and clung to him like a koala, wrapping all my limbs around him. Yes… Just like this… Now everything in my world was perfect. I don’t know how long we sat like that, simply hugging and unwilling to let each other go. But after some time, Jay pulled back slightly, softly kissed my forehead, and whispered with a smile: “Well, kitten, did you recharge a little?” I purred contentedly, rubbing my cheek against his palm that was gently cradling my face, and let my greedy gaze slide over this magnificent example of male beauty, absorbing every detail. I started missing my beloved the very moment he walked out the door of my room in the morning. No matter what anyone said, Jay looked absolutely stunning in white. Even though I saw him in the coat every day, I still briefly slipped out of reality each time, openly admiring him. And of course, this didn’t escape his notice. “Hey, Bambi… why are you zoning out? Did you really not recognize your beloved husband? I was only gone for half a day,” he grumbled with a teasing half-smile. I finally snapped out of the contemplative trance he had put me in without even trying and lightly smacked his shoulder, snorting: “You were gone for a *whole* half a day! In that time I could have easily forgotten not only what you look like, but who you are at all!” Hearing this, he chuckled quietly and pulled me into his arms again, easily dealing with my displeasure with one possessive kiss and a hoarse: “Well then, Mrs. McFell, since you have such memory problems, I have no choice but to take the most serious measures to restore it…” His soft lips found mine again, confidently silencing me and drowning out any objections or protests with deep, greedy kisses. They physically prevented me from saying anything and left my made-up amnesia no chance. But I wasn’t really complaining. His lips were soft and hot, velvety-tender, with a taste of coffee he had probably drunk before coming to me. Although I had never particularly liked coffee before, on his lips it tasted simply divine. When Jay finally let me breathe again, my head was noticeably spinning from the rush of endorphins. Now I was suffering from a different kind of amnesia — because now I was wondering… who *I* was? And this hot hooligan, who was also my beloved husband, looked extremely pleased with himself and what he had just done to me. He had really tried hard to restore my memory of who he was. Looking into my hazy eyes and repeatedly glancing down at my wet, swollen lips with sparkling amusement, he smiled slyly. “Well, bunny, do you remember who I am now?” he purred, smiling like a cat and stroking my flushed cheeks with the pads of his warm fingers. “Yes, but… Now I have a different problem, Doctor,” I complained, biting the lips he had just kissed so greedily. “What is it?” “I forgot what my name is.” Jay snorted, clearly very pleased with himself and his newly invented methods of treating amnesia. Then his gaze warmed, he leaned toward me, tilting my face up to meet him, and whispered right against my lips: “You are Rosé McFell, but I call you Bambi, fawn, doll, bunny… Should I continue?” Feeling his velvety half-whisper with warm breath on my parted lips, I tried my hardest not to laugh, but in the end I couldn’t hold back. With a quiet laugh, I buried my face in his neck and asked from there: “Did you eat too much pink vanilla?” “A little.” Jay also chuckled, gathering me into his arms possessively. His chest shook with silent laughter. Then he rested his chin on top of my head, slowly stroking my back with light touches that sent pleasant goosebumps running along my spine, and sighed contentedly. I decided to misbehave a little and pressed closer to him, leaving a light teasing kiss on his neck. But that didn’t seem enough, so I trailed fluttering kisses upward along the sharp line of his perfect jaw, lightly nibbling his chin. I managed to hear his ragged sigh before his arms tightened around my waist, literally crushing me against him. “Little hooligan,” he whispered against my lips, gripping my chin with warm fingers and tilting my face up to punish my boldness with another greedy kiss. It was wet, blatantly possessive, and impossibly sweet. *So who’s the real hooligan here?..* “You were gone for a whole half a day…” I grumbled again with a sigh when he finally pulled back, leaving one last kiss on my lips. He smiled guiltily, stroked my cheek, tilted his head, and whispered: “I was hoping my distraction maneuver would work and ten minutes of kissing would make you forget about it and forgive me.” I bit my lip, trying to hide the sly smile that kept breaking through, and drawled: “Ten minutes is too little, Jay. Now if we were talking about thirty… then I might think about it…” His eyes flashed the second I said the last word. He pulled me to him again, wrapping his arm around my waist and purring: “Hooligan *and* blackmailer… What a nightmare… Who did I marry..? Where did my good, proper girl go, hm?” “Hey!” I immediately bristled, but he didn’t let my righteous anger flare up. With a quiet laugh he pressed his lips to mine again. When he finally pulled away, not a trace of my fake indignation remained. Jay pressed his forehead to mine, stroked my cheek, and asked with a smile: “I hope I’m forgiven now?” I closed my eyes dreamily, burying my fingers in the hair at the back of his head, and whispered: “More than forgiven… So tomorrow you can be gone the whole day, but then you’ll have to kiss me for two hours.” Jay raised an eyebrow, biting his smiling lips, and purred hoarsely, rubbing his nose against mine: “Not that I’m against it, but… Will you even survive such a kiss marathon, baby?” “You’ll see tomorrow, darling,” I smirked, hanging on the neck of my quite pleased husband and looking at him adoringly. “Alright, kitten. We’ll see about tomorrow, but right now we need to go,” he informed me with a mysterious smile. I frowned, staring at him in confusion. “What do you mean?” Jay lightly kissed the tip of my nose and whispered with a smile: “You don’t want to sleep yet, do you?” I shook my head. “No, of course not. I’ve already slept the whole day.” He nodded as if he had heard exactly what he wanted and whispered quietly, like a conspirator afraid of being overheard (even though we were alone in the room): “Then get ready, Bambi… it’s time.” “Time for what?” My eyes widened as much as possible. The last time he had said this to me was on my birthday, when he had kidnapped me from the clinic and taken me to his place to fulfill my dream. And now it looked like… he was going to fulfill another one. My suspicions were immediately confirmed by his next words: “Time for our great escape, baby. And for making wishes. The stars are brightest tonight. I checked.” For a few seconds I stared at my husband in disbelief. He looked extremely pleased with himself and the effect he had on me. Then I squealed with joy and threw my arms around his neck. He laughed and pulled me close, whispering into my hair: “Shh, shh, or they’ll hear us and we won’t be allowed to go anywhere.” “We’re going to watch the meteor shower?” I squeaked in an excited, loud half-whisper. He nodded with a smile and stroked my cheek. “Yes, Bambi. I promised you.” I bit my lip, fighting back a sudden wave of tears, and pressed my cheek to his warm, broad palm. “Thank you, my love…” “Don’t thank me for this, sunshine. I would do anything for you and even more…” He cradled my face in his warm palms and softly kissed my forehead. Then he whispered again in a conspiratorial half-whisper: “Now get dressed. We need to escape before Jisoo comes on shift, otherwise we won’t make it… I’m afraid she’s still mad at me for your last kidnapping and the scolding Tae gave her…” I laughed quietly, unable to contain my delight and anticipation. In my hurry to jump out of bed, I nearly fell, getting tangled in the blanket. Jay caught me by the waist and whispered with a quiet laugh: “Careful, kitten. Slow down a bit. The stars aren’t going anywhere.” I sighed in displeasure, blowing my bangs out of my eyes, and was about to object that they *would* go away since the night wasn’t endless, when suddenly the floor swayed beneath me. I had to grab my husband’s arm while waiting for the wave of dizziness and sharp, cutting pain in my chest to pass. *No… please, not now…* Everything went dark before my eyes. I squeezed them shut, breathing fast and shallow, praying that this damned episode would pass quickly and Jay wouldn’t notice. But of course he noticed everything. His arms closed around me in a protective ring, and above my head came his worried, hoarse voice: “Baby, what’s wrong? Are you feeling bad? Where does it hurt?” Fortunately, after a few moments I felt better. I lifted my head and met the gaze of my beloved’s gentle eyes, full of anxiety. Jay was watching me attentively, still waiting for an answer. I forced myself to smile, even though it came out weak and strained. I had to convince him that: “Nowhere. Nothing hurts, my love. I’m fine. I just stood up too quickly, probably…” He didn’t believe me. I could see it in his eyes and the frown between his brows. I was afraid he would change his mind and we wouldn’t go anywhere. But after a few endless moments, Jay smiled, stroked my cheek, kissed my forehead, and whispered: “Then let me help you get dressed and we’ll go.”
