Chapter 1: Before the Letter

Settings
She had loved him quietly for so long that the feeling had become part of her breathing. It lived in the pauses between her words, in the way she lingered when he spoke, in the way her heart tightened whenever he smiled like he didn’t deserve to. She noticed the shadows first. Not the dramatic kind — just the small ones. The way he stopped laughing at jokes he used to find stupidly funny. The way he drifted through hallways like someone walking underwater. The way his messages grew shorter, then slower, then rare. She told herself he was tired. She told herself he needed space. She told herself she’d tell him how she felt “soon,” when the moment was right, when she wasn’t so afraid of ruining everything. But “soon” kept slipping further away. Every day she rehearsed the words in her head, and every day she swallowed them. She imagined confessing — imagined his surprise, imagined his relief, imagined him realizing he wasn’t alone. She imagined her love being enough to pull him back toward the light. But imagining was easier than risking the truth. So she stayed silent. And he kept sinking. One night, after rereading their old conversations for the hundredth time, she realized something terrifying: if she didn’t speak now, she might never get the chance. The thought hit her like cold water. Her hands shook. Her breath stuttered. That was the moment she decided to write the letter. Not because she was brave — but because she was finally more afraid of losing him than of being rejected. She didn’t know it yet, but every word she wrote would become a weight she’d carry for the rest of her life.
