Chapter 18: The Trial of Sand and Fire

Flora hit the ground hard — but not sand.
Stone.
She pushed herself up, coughing. The air was thick with dust. Aestus lay beside her, groaning. The dragon was nowhere in sight.
They were in an arena.
Circular. Enclosed by towering sandstone walls. The sky above was a swirling vortex of gold and red.
A voice boomed from everywhere and nowhere.
“To claim the path forward, you must face your truth.”
Flora’s flames flickered nervously. “What does that mean?”
Aestus stood, brushing sand from his hair. “It means a trial.”
The ground trembled.
A figure rose from the sand — a perfect replica of Flora, but made of swirling grains, her eyes burning with fire.
Aestus stepped back. “Flora… that’s you.”
The sand‑Flora spoke, voice sharp and cold.
“You pretend you want justice. But you crave revenge.”
Flora’s chest tightened. “That’s not true.”
Sand‑Flora smirked. “You want Malum to suffer. You want him to burn.”
Flora’s flames flared. “I want him stopped.”
“Liar.”
The sand‑double lunged.
Flora barely dodged, rolling across the arena floor. Fire burst from her palms, striking the double — but the flames passed through harmlessly.
Aestus shouted, “You can’t fight her with fire! Sheisyour fire!”
Flora gritted her teeth. “Then how do I beat her?”
“Accept the truth,” Aestus said. “Whatever it is.”
The sand‑double advanced, flames swirling around her.
Flora’s breath shook.
She closed her eyes.
And whispered:
“I am angry. I am hurt. I want him to pay for what he did.”
The sand‑double paused.
“But I won’t let revenge control me,” Flora continued. “I choose justice. Not vengeance.”
The arena fell silent.
The sand‑double dissolved into dust.
The Sentinel’s voice echoed:
“You have passed.”
The walls crumbled.
Light flooded the arena.
And Flora stepped forward — stronger than before.
