Chapter 4

Iris sighs, “It is really hard to explain.”
“Don’t worry”, her mom says, “Try your best.”
Iris begins to explain the story, “Then…”
Once she finishes the story, her mom starts to breathe unevenly. “Mom, what is wrong?” Iris asks
Her mom doesn’t answer just yet, and she starts to have a mental breakdown.
“Mom, please answer me. I’m starting to get worried.” Iris says.
“I haven’t told you about our family history before you were born.” Her mom says
“Mom, what are you talking about?”
Her mom sighs, “Before you were born, your dad and I used to be mafiosos, and we got into a lot of trouble. We also made a lot of enemies back in the days we were mafiosos. Then, I got pregnant with you, and we had to stop, but our enemies didn’t stop; they are still after us, waiting for the right moment to attack.” Her mom finally finishes.
Iris was shocked at her mom’s words and hesitated to talk. Finally, she speaks up, and she sounds heartbroken, because her mom never told her about this, and Iris might be in danger. “How come you never told me this?”
Her mom sighs, “I wanted to protect you. I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
“And yet by not telling me, you put me in more danger because I don’t even know who this guy is, and now I have no idea what to expect from him,” Iris says, sounding even more heartbroken.
Her mom started to cry, and she spoke up, “Sweetie, you have to listen to me, we couldn’t tell anyone who we were because if we did, that would blow our cover.”
“What do you mean by blowing our cover? Are you some sort of spy?”
“No, not at all, I mean that if we told you we could get in super big trouble, like we could get killed, because if we tell someone, then other mafiosos might get killed too. We have lots of enemies, and we try to move on, but we can’t.”
