Chapter 21

Settings
The takedown was fast yet felt slow. As soon as she released me, I ran, coughing, clutching my throat, and was guided outside by an officer. Others tackled Brynn and cuffed her. I could only imagine their anger and embarrassment at having to take down one of their own. But I was safe. And now we needed to find Carol and Jenny. Brynn was interrogated immediately. At first, she wouldn’t talk. My frustration turned to rage. I wanted to barge in and beat the info out of her. I begged an officer to hold her down while I took the honors. “I know how you feel,” he said, “but we stick to the book.” “Screw your book! Let me use her obsession with me to our advantage. Let me get the info.” Finally, they let me try. I entered the room prepared to lie through my teeth. Brynn looked at me with desperate eyes. “Please don’t hate me, my sweet Kat.” “I don’t,” I said softly. “I want to stay in touch. Visit you every week. Fight for you. But I can only do that if you tell me where they are.” “Well…” “Did you kill them?” “No. No. Not at all.” “Then where are they?” Brynn finally confessed. She had hidden both Carol and Jenny in an abandoned building that was freezing, wet, musty, and full of leaks. They were chained to a pipe. A bucket for a toilet. Minimal food and water. But they were alive. Alive. They spent a few days in the hospital and then returned to the house. Carol and I stayed together. Jenny went to her sister’s. After Brynn’s trial… She would never see us again. Ever.
