Chapter 20

“You can’t just steal me away from Carol!” I screamed, terrified that Carol and Jenny might be dead.
“I don’t need to steal what I want. I can take it,” Brynn said.
“The hell you can,” I snarled, backing away.
She smiled slyly. “No?”
“If you wanted me so bad, why didn’t you say something when we met?”
“I told you—I was called out of town. By the time I saw you again, Carol had gotten to you.”
“So you fucking killed her?”
“Who said anything about killing her?”
“Where the hell is she? Why hasn’t she contacted me? I know you did something to her!”
“I told you to give me your fucking phone.”
“I’m only trying to reach Carol,” I lied.
She grabbed the phone, looked at the call history.
“You little fucker!”
Her expression became pure insanity.
I ran as fast as I could back into the bathroom. I’d never have been able to get past her. I locked the door. She kicked it in within seconds.
But the delay bought me precious minutes before help arrived. The next 45 minutes were the longest of my life.
When the police entered the house, Brynn grabbed me and pulled a gun. I was held hostage while negotiators talked to her.
Then—shockingly—she released me and surrendered.
