Chapter 18

Brynn led me to the dining table and opened her laptop.
“What do you want to show me?” I asked.
She tapped a few keys, then turned the screen toward me.
My blood ran cold.
Dozens of pictures of me, mostly taken without my knowledge.
“What—what is this?” I stammered.
“Just my little collection.”
“I don’t understand.”
“They’re only pictures,” she said.
“Yeah, Brynn, but why? You invaded my privacy!”
“Because it’s you I really love!” she shouted. “Jenny may be sweet, but you’re more than sweet. You’re beautiful. You’re smart. You’re everything.”
Fear, disbelief, and anger all hit at once. “I’m nothing to you, Brynn.”
“Don’t say that!” she snapped. “Stop being so blind and ungrateful to what I have to offer.”
“But we’re with other people.”
“Not anymore,” she said, voice dark.
My heart pounded. I had to escape. But first—“Brynn, where are Carol and Jenny?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes. If we’re going to have a future, I need to close that chapter.”
She looked confused. “How are you going to do that?”
“By you telling me everything. No secrets.”
Brynn grinned. “You like secrets, don’t you?”
“No, Brynn. I don’t.”
A flash of anger. “Well, they don’t matter anymore. It’s just you and me now.”
