Every instinct told me to run. But I knew the smart thing was to stay calm.
I cleared my throat. “I appreciate your kindness, Brynn, but you’re with Jenny and I’m with Carol.”
Her eyes turned icy. “You think I’m just being kind?”
“No. It’s just… well, you do love Jenny, don’t you?”
She gazed off toward my side. “I suppose I did. She was always willing to do whatever pleased me.”
A chill ran down my spine.
“Brynn,” I said, “where is Carol?”
She blinked, surprised. “Where do you think she is? You know where she is.”
Playing dumb, I said, “Jenny’s sister must really need her.”
“It’s only been a few days.”
I wanted out. “Can you look at my bike with me? Help me figure out how to fix it? You’re good at that.”
She studied me suspiciously.
“Well?” I asked softly.
“Sure.”
Relief washed over me.
“But not until I show you something first.”
Oh shit.
