Notes:
Warmth radiated all around Trevor. He lay on his back, floating. His eyes were still closed. For a moment, Trevor wondered if he died. The water told him a different story. The gentle surf embraced him, its flow more peaceful than any body of water Trevor had ever known. Vapors rose, condensed, and clung to his skin as droplets. The pool didn’t seem too deep–five or six feet at most. A soft touch caressed Trevor’s face. It was flaky-yet-smooth. “I think he’s waking up,” whispered a voice Trevor didn’t recognize. Another voice spoke louder. “...Do you have to touch him like that?” That was a voice Trevor recognized. He wanted to get up so badly and hug her–and maybe even do more than that. Trevor opened his eyes. A clear blue sky hung high above him. He expected to see Rebecca greeting him with a smile, but a certain Zora princess invaded his view instead. “Greetings!” Ruto said cheerfully. Her bright expression matched her tone. “Hello,” Trevor said. He let himself smile– it was good to see Ruto safe and sound. Her webbed hands traced his steam-slick face. “You’re in our healing bay,” Ruto declared. “It is in the midst of the Zora Fountain behind our domain.” The domain? We made it back…we really won… Trevor turned to his head to the right. His friends were scattered all around the healing bay. Jerome and Sheila dipped their feet into the water. Link took off his cap and dunked his head inside. They looked in better shape than Trevor. He didn't feel bad about it–he was just happy his friends were OK. “Keep resting,” the Zora Princess insisted. “The battle inside Jabu-Jabu’s belly took a toll on all of you–but especially you, Trevor Berenson.” Trevor felt so encouraged by everything that he tried to sit up. Two voices–Ruto's and another girl's voice-called out to him to not sit up. Pain shot through him like an arrow. "Oh my God," Trevor groaned as Ruto reached out to him, settling him back down into the water. Another pair of hands joined Ruto's in the effort. They had a certain touch that was gentle and rough all at the same time. As Trevor laid back down, he looked up again and there was Rebecca. She knelt by his side, waiting for him this whole time. Just like before. Rebecca had let her hair down some time between the end of the battle and now. It flowed like bright red silk, falling well past her shoulders. Trevor didn’t know where Rebecca's hair ended. He started noticing more things about Rebecca since their kiss in the desert. He really just wanted to look into her eyes–those blue eyes that looked better than any trace of the atmosphere above-and the glow the sun brought to her face. Rebecca’s hand brushed over his. The fingers locked with one another for just a moment. They shared a smile. Trevor’s pain was forgotten. Even when Ruto began speaking again, she couldn't interrupt the two of them. She didn’t seem to realize that she what was going on, but prattled on about Trevor "honoring the Zora race, so it would only be right for the Zoras to honor their hero as well." Trevor just kept holding Rebecca's hand. His eyes flickered open and shut-half-asleep or staring at the sky, finally at peace for once in this land. “Princess Ruto!” A Zora Sentry in the distance called out from the shore of the hot spring. “Your father summons you!” Ruto sighed. “Coming!” she shouted towards the Sentry. She looked back at Trevor. “I shall be back. Thank you for being a great hero for our people.” When Ruto scurried away, Rebecca drew closer to Trevor. She smiled down on him, pressing her hand against his forehead. “You were kind of dumb in there,” Rebecca said. “You should have moved after attacking Barinade.” Trevor chortled. “You’re probably right.” “I know I am. You had me worried.” “I was wondering about you too.” “I’m glad you’re OK.” “Me too.” Rebecca stopped touching Trevor but kept smiling down at him. Trevor’s heart beat more than he could understand. He sat up again, ignored the pain, and leaned in for a kiss. The world stopped, like it had in the desert. Nothing else around the two mattered, not in that moment. “I’m glad to be on your team,” Rebecca whispered as they pulled away from each other. “It’s nice having the best one around,” Trevor said. The others soon joined Trevor and Rebecca, embracing Trevor as he returned to the waking world. At long last, the trouble was over. Hyrule was safe and finally on the verge of peace.
