Part 2: Phase 2: Illusion Chapter 4

In the grand hall of Javier’s stone estate, the two largest mafia forces of the south had gathered — the Wing of Darkness and the Order of Lightning. Their eyes followed every movement closely. Tension between the clans always existed, but now there was something different in the air — a mix of anticipation and uncertainty.
Javier stood at the head of the long table, Luka beside him, hands in his pockets, silent and calm. Javier’s gaze swept across the hall, then he gave Luka a brief nod.
— Luka and I promised a surprise, — he said, and there was something more than mere confidence in his voice. — And the time has come.
The door at the end of the hall slowly opened. First, there was silence. Then… from the shadows, she appeared.
Sofia.
Alive. Strong. With a proud stride, she entered the room, removing her hood. Every eye in the hall widened. Someone gripped the armrest of their chair, others stood, unable to believe what they were seeing.
— Surprise, — she said calmly, her gaze sweeping across familiar, shocked faces.
The seconds of silence seemed eternal. Elena Rodriguez, the consigliere of the Order of Lightning, was the first to recover. She slowly rose from her seat, eyes fixed on Sofia:
— Sofia… This… This is impossible. We were all certain that you… — her voice trembled.
— That I was dead? — the donna replied with a faint smile. — Yes, that was the illusion. But I’m alive. And that’s why we are here today.
The hall murmured — whispers spread, and some stared at the floor in disbelief. Members of both clans could not comprehend how this was possible. Sofia waited until the noise subsided, then continued:
— It was a necessary performance. All for safety. They wanted to kill me… and nearly did. But thanks to Lorenzo… I am here.
A heavy silence followed, this time not from shock, but from realization.
Sofia fixed her gaze on her people:
— I know my return may raise doubts. But I am here to fight. For my family. For each of you.
Her words hit hard, like a gunshot. And at that moment, several voices in the hall spoke in unison:
— Welcome home, donna.
---
Javier’s estate was bathed in twilight, which only accentuated the warm glow of the living room. Sofia sat on a soft sofa, wrapped in a blanket, holding a glass of red wine. Javier stood by the window, silently gazing at the city at dusk.
— I still can’t believe you’re here, — he said quietly, eyes fixed on her. — Real. Alive.
Sofia smiled and nodded:
— Sometimes I can’t believe I’m seeing you like this again either.
Javier stepped closer, sat beside her, and took her hand in his.
— You have no idea what I went through… — his voice trembled. — I was shattered. Empty. Every night I remembered every conversation, every glance…
She lowered her eyes. Her fingers squeezed his firmly.
— I wanted to call, write… but I couldn’t. It was too dangerous. I… I’m sorry, Javier.
— No apologies, — he interrupted softly. — You’re here. And that’s enough. But… — he paused, looking into her eyes — I never want to lose you again. Never.
Sofia felt her heart tighten.
— What do you mean?
— I want us to be together. Always. Not as mafia allies. But as us. Just you and me. Sofia and Javier. Forever.
She was silent for a few seconds, as if trying to process whether she was dreaming.
— Are you sure?.. After everything?
— I’ve been sure since the moment we left the restaurant together. — He gently touched her face. — Say that you want it too.
Sofia looked at him, her eyes shining.
— I always have. I just feared admitting it — even to myself.
He smiled and embraced her. In that moment, it was as if there were no wars, no betrayals, no past.
Only them.
Sofia sat in his arms, resting her cheek on his shoulder. Her breathing was quiet and calm, but inside, a storm of emotions raged.
— You know, — she whispered, — when I was in Milan, at my parents’ estate, I used to lie awake at night imagining… if only things were different. If you were there. If we had a chance at something real.
Javier gently touched her hair, his fingers gliding softly and tenderly.
— Now we have that chance, — he whispered. — And I won’t let it slip away.
Sofia lifted her head, their eyes met. Her eyes gleamed with lamp light and feelings she could no longer hold back. Javier carefully touched her cheek, then his lips found hers. The kiss was slow, deep, filled with everything they had been missing — pain, memories, hope, and love.
When they pulled away, Sofia whispered:
— Promise me you’ll never let me go again.
— Even if the world burns, — he replied. — I’ll hold your hand.
They stayed like that for a long while, pressed together, as the night wrapped them in a peace they hadn’t known in a long time.
---
Sunlight gently streamed through the half-open curtains, touching their faces. Sofia was the first to open her eyes. She turned her head and saw Javier — peaceful, slightly smiling in his sleep. Her fingers unconsciously touched his cheek, and he slowly opened his eyes.
— Good morning, — she whispered with a faint smile.
— The best morning in a very long time, — he replied, pulling her closer. — I woke up and you’re here. Real. Alive.
Sofia smiled and kissed his shoulder gently.
— I still can’t believe I’m lying next to you. It all feels like a dream.
— If it’s a dream, — he said more seriously, — I never want to wake up.
They fell silent for a moment, savoring the quiet and warmth.
— I was thinking, — Javier said, playfully stroking her hand, — maybe we should go to your estate today?
Sofia raised her eyebrows in surprise.
— Why?
— So you can pack your things… and move in with me. Forever.
A spark appeared in her eyes. She smiled softly.
— You’re quick, Rodriguez.
— I just know what I want. And who.
She rested her forehead against his, whispering:
— I’ll gladly move. Where you are — that’s my home.
They were about to leave the bed when Javier held her hand, making her turn to face him. His gaze was deep and calm.
— I love you, Stellina.
Sofia froze for a moment, as if she hadn’t heard him clearly.
— What?
— Stellina. From Italian — little star, — he smiled warmly.
Sofia raised her brows, slightly stunned, but a soft light shone in her eyes.
— I know what it means, but… — she took a step back without looking away. — Did you just call me Stellina?
— Yes, — he stepped closer. — Because that’s how I see you. A little star that appeared in my darkness.
Sofia exhaled, trying to hold back her emotions. She touched his face.
— You know h
ow to surprise, Javier Rodriguez…
— And that’s not all I’ll surprise you with, mia Stellina.
She smiled through tears, then kissed him tenderly.
