Part 2: Phase 2: Illusion Chapter 3

Settings
The day dragged on slowly, like the long silence before a storm. Sofia sat by the window in her estate, wrapped in a soft blanket, a cup of cold coffee in her hands. She turned her thoughts over like the pages of a burned book: how to tell Javier she was alive? Write him? Call him? Just show up? Suddenly, her phone vibrated. The name “Lorenzo” lit up the screen. — Yes? — her voice was measured. — Sofia, we have a problem. Luka is meeting Javier at a restaurant today. In an hour. But… Alicia has something planned. An ambush. They might even try to hurt Javier. Sofia was silent for exactly three seconds. Then her voice turned icy: — Which restaurant? — Vicolo del Fuoco. She was already on her feet. She threw the phone onto the bed, opened the closet, and grabbed a dark hoodie, coat, and black glasses. Gun — in the holster at her hip. Hair — in a low bun. Face — concealed. Shadow, not a human. — I won’t let them touch him, — she whispered, fastening the coat. Stepping outside, she quickly hailed a taxi. The driver barely had time to greet her before she said: — Vicolo del Fuoco. Fast. The car sped off, and Sofia stared out the window, her heart beating in the rhythm of approaching truth. --- Inside the Vicolo del Fuoco restaurant, a calm atmosphere prevailed — the perfect place for a business meeting. In the back, at a table by the window, two men sat. Luka twirled a wine glass, while across from him, Javier’s empty gaze betrayed deep exhaustion. — I’ve accepted it, Luka, — Javier said quietly, — if Sofia is dead, then… just tell me one more time. So I can finally believe it. Luka looked away, swallowed the wine, and said nothing. Doubts pounded in his heart, yet a promise was a promise. Meanwhile, a few tables away, a modest figure silently took a seat. Sofia. In dark clothing, hood pulled low, glasses on, she watched. Them. Everything. Be careful, Javier… — flashed through her mind. Minutes later, more patrons began entering the restaurant. First two, then three more. Ordinary at first glance, but Sofia recognized them instantly. Alicia’s people. They scattered through the hall — some by the bar, others closer to the entrance. Sofia’s hand rested on her gun under the table. Breath steady. Pulse — wild. They don’t see. They don’t know… Then — the unmistakable sound. A gunshot. A glass plate shattered near Javier. Someone missed. But it was only the beginning. — TAKE COVER! — she shouted, springing to her feet. The first shot — straight into the chest of an attacker by the bar. The second — into the shoulder of one hiding behind a pillar. Luka and Javier, reacting on instinct, dove behind overturned tables. Both drew weapons and fired back. — Who the hell is that?! — Javier shouted, looking at the figure in the coat moving with precision. — I don’t know, but they’re on our side! — Luka called out. Sofia ignored the bullets. Her movements were precise, cold. One by one, the attackers fell. The hall filled with screams and the chaos of retreat. Finally, the last of Alicia’s people dropped their weapon and fled through the kitchen. Silence fell. Sofia stood amid the chaos — hood still concealing her face, hands tense on the gun. Javier and Luka approached cautiously, weapons at the ready. — Who are you?.. — Javier asked softly. She slowly removed her glasses, then the hood. Eyes met. And the world stopped. His heart froze. — Sofia? — he whispered, as if saying her name might make it vanish. She nodded. — It’s me. — This… — he stepped back. — No. You… You’re dead. I… His gaze darkened. He clenched his fists. — I’ve been looking for you… — his voice broke. — And you… where were you? Sofia exhaled. Her voice calm, eyes full of pain: — I survived. And Lorenzo helped me hide. It was a choice I made to protect everyone. And you. Javier looked at her as if at a ghost: — You thought it would make it easier for me to know you were dead? That I left you in that house… that I didn’t make it in time? She lowered her gaze: — I know I betrayed you. But I couldn’t stay silent any longer, especially when Alicia… He stepped closer, right beside her. His gaze firm, hands now lowered. — You just saved my life, — he said softly. — But I still don’t know how to live with it. Sofia nodded. — I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m only asking — give me a chance to explain everything. Javier took a deep breath and looked away: — Then start. Because if I don’t understand now why you disappeared — I’ll break again. Still stunned, Javier sank into a chair. Sofia sat silently beside him. Luka sat across, dabbing his forehead with a napkin. Javier glanced at Luka. — You knew? Luka sighed and nodded: — Yes. But not from the beginning. She told me herself. And I stayed silent because… it was her decision. I wanted to tell you, Javier. But she asked for time. Javier looked away, then slowly back at Sofia. — You should’ve trusted me. After everything. Sofia leaned forward, voice quiet but firm: — I know. And I’ve berated myself every day for it. But when Lorenzo spared me… I was in shock. I didn’t know who I could trust. Alicia could still try to kill me. If she found out I was alive — she would. But most of all, I feared for you. That if they used you, our connection would become your weakness. She paused for a moment. — I wanted to show up when I could act. When I could destroy her. And today… when I learned she planned an ambush… I couldn’t wait any longer. Javier stared at her long, then exhaled heavily: — It still doesn’t change the fact that I lived these months without you. But… — he looked down — …but you’re alive. And that’s the only thing keeping me standing. Luka interjected: — Maybe we continue this conversation somewhere without bodies and broken windows? Sofia nodded, but Javier looked at her once more: — We’ll talk more. Everything. No secrets. Agreed? Sofia softly: — Agreed. Luka looked at Sofia, then at Javier. Understanding in his eyes. — You two need to talk. Without me. — He stood, adjusted his jacket, and nodded. — Go to your estate, Javier. It’s safe there. Alicia will be in a panic after this failure. I’ll make sure no traces remain. Sofia looked at him gratefully. — Thank you, Luka. He smiled faintly: — I’m used to hiding you by now. Javier and Sofia silently left the restaurant through a back exit. The street was quiet, only distant sirens hinting someone had called the police. In the car, silence reigned. Javier drove, Sofia beside him. Her hands trembled slightly, but she tried not to show it. — You’re still keeping quiet, — she said softly, looking at him. Javier didn’t take his eyes off the road: — I’m trying not to explode. Because I don’t know which is stronger inside me — anger or relief. — I’ll endure it if you want to vent. — Let’s start with the fact that I spent months searching for a reason to live without you. And when I found it — you appeared. In a hoodie. With a gun. Like a Hollywood action hero. Sofia smiled through tears: — At least something hasn’t changed — I’m still dramatic. Javier almost smiled, for the first time that evening: — Yes. But this — this is my drama. The estate was empty and quiet as they entered. Night had fallen thickly over the Neapolitan sky. The living room greeted them with its familiar scent of wood and coffee. Javier silently walked to the window and stopped, staring into the darkness. Sofia stood behind him, clutching her coat. — I wanted to tell you sooner, — she began softly. — But I didn’t know how. I feared you’d hate me for the lie. Javier turned. His eyes were serious, but no longer angry. — I didn’t hate you, Sofia. I hated the world without you. She stepped forward. Her voice trembled: — Then tell me… why the hell did you stay silent at the restaurant for so long? — Because I needed to make sure it was really you. — His voice cracked. — That I hadn’t completely lost my mind. That you were real. Sofia lowered her coat, stepped closer. They were standing very close now. — I’m real. Alive. And I love you. Only their breaths remained between them. Javier stared into her eyes, afraid she might vanish. Then he gently touched her face, ran his fingers along her cheek as if checking that she was not a mirage. — Then let me feel that it’s true, — he whispered. And he kissed her. It was no fairy-tale kiss — it was filled with pain, loss, longing, and endless love. It lasted an eternity and yet only a moment, and both knew — everything before this was just the prelude. When they pulled apart, Sofia whispered: — Now I’m truly home.
