Phase 3: Crossroads. Chapter 4
November 3, 2025 at 4:43 PM
The day after the reception, where Sofia and Javier had encountered Alicia, the atmosphere in the Lightning Order’s mansion was tense. Sofia stood by the panoramic window of her office, staring thoughtfully at the city below. She knew that their confrontation with Alicia was only beginning.
The door opened quietly, and Maximilian walked in.
— We have news, — he said, tossing a folder onto the desk.
Sofia unfolded the documents and skimmed through the pages quickly.
— Alicia is buying a new shipment of weapons. After we intercepted the last one, she’s become more cautious — but she hasn’t stopped, — Maximilian explained.
Sofia pressed her lips together.
— We have to move faster, — she said, closing the folder and looking at her advisor. — Where will the deal take place?
— They’re meeting at the Naples port in three days.
— Good. Get the team ready.
Maximilian nodded and was about to leave when Sofia added:
— I’ll let Javier know.
---
When Sofia arrived at Javier’s estate, he greeted her in his office.
— You again? What’s the matter this time? — he asked with a teasing smile, sitting back in his chair.
— I told you, I won’t let you get bored, — she replied, tossing the folder onto his desk.
Javier raised an eyebrow, opened the folder, and scanned the documents.
— A deal at the port? — he asked.
— Yes. And this time, I’m not letting her get what she wants, — Sofia said firmly.
Javier smiled slightly.
— I like your style.
— So, shall we strike first? — she asked.
— Of course, — he replied seriously.
— Good. Maximilian and Jan are already working on the plan.
Sofia sank into the couch in Javier’s office, leaning back and closing her eyes. She looked exhausted. Javier, watching her quietly, poured two glasses of wine and handed one to her.
— Thanks, — she said softly, taking the glass and sipping it.
Javier sat beside her. For a few seconds, they sat in silence until Sofia sighed and ran a hand through her hair.
— I’m tired, Javier, — she admitted, looking at him. — Lately it feels like I live only to fight. I can’t allow myself to be weak, but… sometimes it’s so terrifying.
Javier looked at her closely. For the first time, he felt he was seeing the real Sofia — not the powerful donna, but a woman carrying too much weight on her shoulders.
— You’re not alone, Sofia, — he said quietly. — You have your people. And you have me.
She lowered her gaze to the glass in her hands.
— I’m afraid of letting them down. The Lightning Order is my family, and I must protect them. But sometimes I wonder… what if I make the wrong move? What if one day it all collapses?
Javier smiled faintly, recognizing his own fears in her words.
— I know that feeling. When my father died, I wasn’t ready to take over. I was terrified I’d fail — that everything would fall apart. But you know what helped?
Sofia looked up at him.
— What?
— My people’s faith, — he replied. — They stayed with me, even when I doubted myself. You have the same, Sofia. You’re strong, and your people know it.
She stared at him for a moment, then smiled faintly.
— You really think so?
— I know so, — Javier said with quiet confidence.
Sofia took another sip of wine, seeming a little calmer.
— Thank you, — she said softly.
Javier nodded, taking a sip from his own glass. He understood her better than anyone else. And perhaps that was why something deeper than alliance was beginning to form between them.
---
The grand hall of Sofia’s mansion was filled with people, all waiting for important news. The tables were set, but no one cared about the wine or food — everyone’s mind was on the outcome of the deal that would decide the fate of their united clans.
Sofia sat on the edge of the large table, her eyes fixed on the doors as if she was waiting for someone to bring crucial news. Javier sat nearby, his sharp gaze following every movement in the room. He knew that everything they’d built so far hinged on whether this deal succeeded.
Elena sat next to Federico, while Jan and Maximilian were pacing around, still discussing the details of the operation that could shift the balance of power in the city.
— They should’ve called by now, — Tyler said impatiently, checking his watch. — What’s taking so long?
Sofia only shook her head slightly, trying to remain calm. She knew how important this was. If all went according to plan, they would secure the shipment Alicia had been desperate to buy — and that would give the Lightning Order a massive advantage.
— They know what’s at stake, — Javier said, glancing at Sofia. — I’m sure they won’t fail.
Just then, the phone rang. Everyone fell silent as Jan nervously answered the call. After a few tense moments, he finally said, barely hiding his excitement:
— The deal’s done. We signed the contract. The weapons are ours.
The room went completely silent — and then everyone began exchanging looks. Relief and triumph filled the air, but deep down everyone understood — this was only the beginning.
With visible joy and pride, Javier suddenly stood up and, without thinking, pulled Sofia into an embrace. The feeling of success, after everything they’d gone through, overwhelmed him, and he couldn’t help it.
Sofia, taken aback at first, instinctively returned the gesture. She found herself in his arms, feeling the warmth of his body — a fleeting moment of unity and relief that needed no words.
But when Javier stepped back, their eyes met, and a quiet pause followed. They both knew there was something more in that embrace than just shared victory.
— Sorry, I… — Javier began awkwardly, but Sofia interrupted him.
— It’s fine, — she said softly, her voice gentler than usual. She looked down, trying to hide her emotions.
An invisible tension hung between them. With every glance, every heartbeat, they both realized their relationship was becoming something far more complicated than a partnership.
Everyone in the room noticed the subtle change in atmosphere, but no one commented. Only the two of them understood what it meant — the beginning of something new.
Jan finally broke the silence, smiling with relief.
— This isn’t just our victory — it’s the beginning of a new era for the Order and the Wing. And Alicia and her people have no idea what’s coming.
Sofia nodded slightly, her expression firm. This was just part of the strategy. They were only starting to play by their own rules.
---
Then Federico broke the silence.
— Well, my friends, — he exclaimed, — a victory like this definitely deserves a celebration! We should relax and enjoy the moment!
Jan raised his glass, smiling.
— To success, — he said.
Everyone raised their glasses together, and the atmosphere quickly lightened. Even Sofia, though clearly tired, smiled and lifted her glass. Javier, still a bit uneasy, joined in.
The rest of the evening passed in a more relaxed mood. People talked, laughed, and shared stories. Luca and Luisa, who had just returned from finalizing the deal, joined in the celebration, laughing about how well everything had gone.
Sofia and Javier both began to relax, feeling the tension between them ease. They sat close, comfortable now in the silence that had once felt heavy.
The sounds of celebration around them seemed to quiet their inner worries. For the first time in a long while, they allowed themselves simply to be — together with the people who stood by their side.
