The Communication Studies lecture was a blur. Chijioke was lost in his own head, still longing for the courage to participate, not just watch.
When the bell rang, he was ready to escape—but he was stopped. "Hey, Chijioke! We need a fourth for our group project," called out Muna. Chijioke hesitated... until he saw Amara was part of the group.
Suddenly, the anxiety vanished. "Of course! I’d love to help," he stammered, his heart racing. Sitting next to Amara in the library felt surreal. She was everything he admired: confident, witty, effortlessly charming.
As they settled in, Amara turned to him. “So, Chijioke, what do you think about doing a presentation on body language? It’s a fascinating topic!”
Chijioke felt a jolt of panic, barely managing a "Sure! That sounds great!" He knew he was failing the body language test already. Then, Amara leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper.
"I can tell you’re a bit shy. But trust me, confidence is key. I can help you if you want."
Hope bloomed in his chest. "Really? You’d do that?"
Just as she flashed a reassuring smile, Kingsley—the arrogant rival—strutted over. “What’s this? Chijioke getting help from Amara?” he sneered. “He’s not exactly the type to impress anyone.”
Humiliation washed over Chijioke, but Amara stood her ground. "You don’t know him, Kingsley. He’s actually really smart and has a lot to offer," she defended him fiercely.
After Kingsley sauntered away, Amara leaned in again. Her voice was barely above a whisper: "Meet me after class. I have some fun exercises we can do to help you."
Chijioke's mind was racing with possibilities. But as he left the room, his focus shifted. A girl had fainted in the hallway—it was Ada. This was it: a real-life crisis. Chijioke pushed through the crowd, not letting fear hold him back. As he knelt beside her, he felt Amara’s presence behind him.
This was his first test. He had the knowledge, but did he have the courage to apply it, before the project even officially began?
