Chapter 5

Settings
Thursday, April 3 Kya’s last day of the week on duty was pretty much like the last. We sat outside, got our clothes exchanged, and so on. Only this time around I decided to check in with Mary. “So you’re that hot for her?” she asked me. “Well, of course. She’s someone I can’t have.” “You never know. I mean, don’t you think there’s a chance she might like you, too?” “I just hope last night’s hand-holding thing wasn’t just a dream,” I said in a whisper. “What was that?” “I’ll write about it.” “Ok,” she said, understanding that there were others around to overhear my side of the conversation. After she assured me she got my letter off to Andy and a few more minutes of chatting, we said our goodbyes. Just when it seemed 7:00 would never arrive, it did. Espi, Marilyn, and I were returning from sitting outside. Kya was in the hall just outside our door speaking with the hall monitor. She was a turn-on even from several yards away. She laughed happily, casually swinging her arms from front to back, hands lightly clapping together each time they briefly met. What a nice, snug ass the woman has, I thought to myself. She spotted us and turned to face us. “Hi there, everyone. Enjoy the fresh air?” After a few minutes’ chatter, Espi turned the keys over to Kya, then left. I hoped Marilyn would once again turn in early, even if that meant we still wouldn’t have much privacy. I stepped out of the bathroom an hour later. “So you’re leaving soon?” Marilyn asked Kya. “Yup, before the changeover.” “What changeover?” I asked. She turned and saw me approach the table from behind her. I sat down next to her. “So we’ve learned that they plan to eliminate DOs from the rooms altogether in June. They’re going to remove both the entry and bathroom doors and stick three inmates in each room while hallway patrol does walks every ten minutes instead of twenty.” “Oh, yuck. I’m glad that if I had to be stuck here at all, it was before June.” “I know,” agreed Marilyn. “Tell me about it.” “Well, you better get your act together so you won’t be back to have to deal with the new setup,” Kya lectured. “I know, I know. Believe me, I’ve really learned my lesson this time. I’ll probably work for my aunt. She has a little boutique downtown.” “When do you leave?” I asked. “Sunday.” Good, I thought. Right before Kya would return, though I assumed it wouldn’t be long before Marilyn was replaced. Marilyn did turn in early. The closest Kya and I got to having any privacy was when Marilyn took her evening shower. I had gotten in the habit of taking mine in the mornings. “So how ya doing?” she asked when the bathroom door shut. “Ok, and you?” “I’m fine,” she said with a confident smile. “You could say you’re my only bright spot in this place. I look forward to when you come on.” “Amazingly, so do I.” We giggled. “You serious?” I asked. “Yeah, I’m serious.” “No joke?” “No, no joke,” she assured me, which was nice to hear as the last thing I wanted was to be just a game to her to pass time and liven things up. The rest of the night was similar to the last. Marilyn went to bed early, Kya read and watched TV, and I wrote. “Who you writing?” “My friend Mary. I’m telling her how horrible you are, beating and starving me,” I joked. She laughed. Marilyn stirred. We glanced at her, but she kept on snoring. A couple hours later, we once again fell asleep hand in hand.
