Chapter 13

Settings
Our hopes and wishes for a glimpse into Sakura’s past in the new chapter were dashed. Oh well, the new chapter turned out to be one of the best. After telling us about his past in the silent scene of the previous chapter, Sakura became a more open boy, became a fan of pranks, and even finally associated himself with a cat, which was very sweet. But that’s not the point. The chapter also featured a glimpse of Momijikawa, his renewed dislike for Sakura and, for some reason, tears in his eyes. I still have no idea why he dislikes Haruka so much and generally hates people from the outer city. In the chats I frequent, some people are sharing the theory that Momijikawa and Sakura might be brothers, most likely adopted. They believe the boy glimpsed in the scenes where Sakura was sent to live in the barn is Momijikawa. But that’s a bit of a dubious theory; Sakura would have recognized him immediately, by his last name and appearance. Plus, Momijikawa is from Makochi; he grew up and was possibly born there. And if we assume he’s his brother, I’d bet on a biological brother rather than an adopted one, especially a brother Haruka might not even know about. The theory is that Sakura’s biological father, if he was married to his mother, had an affair, and the woman he was having an affair with became pregnant, and then Momijikawa was born. Or maybe he had an affair with Sakura’s mother? Who knows, these are just theories. I have another dubious theory, in case the name Sakura belongs not to our kitten, but to her current adoptive parents. They could both be fraternal twins, but for some reason, Sakura was abandoned by her parents, while Momijikawa remained with them. Consequently, for so many years, realizing their mistake in regards to one of their sons, the parents blamed each other, often arguing in front of their other son, and then divorced. Which is, admittedly, the source of Momijikawa’s hatred for Sakura, but a more reasonable explanation for the hatred could be this: Momijikawa once befriended or knew someone from outside the city, and that person caused him or his family some profound pain. For example, let’s imagine he had a friend, and they were close. But then that friendship crumbled, either because Momijikawa, in an attempt to protect the city, got into a fight with some gang, one of them attacked that same friend and harmed him, and the boy’s parents and the friend himself blamed Momijikawa for everything. Or, as I said, it’s in his family, one of his parents abandoned the family and went off with someone else. Forgive me for thinking so, but this is the first version, more reasonable than theories about Sakura and Momijikawa being brothers. Let’s not cling to all the theories and assumptions I’ve voiced, as the reason for the hatred could be something else. We’ll see how Momijikawa’s story unfolds, and whether we’ll see Sakura’s past through him, as some fans in that chat suggest.
