Sky blue – Freedom
Sirius Black
The sea was stormy and the winds were wailing behind the bars. He actually preferred the cries of winds to any other sounds that this place was filled with. The shrieks, the mumbling, the whispers, the howls of people who no longer remembered they were people at all. Azkaban did that to you.
Sometimes Sirius also forgot that he was a person, a man. His thoughts would become simple, animal-like, and he would curl in the farthest corner of his cell, covering his muzzle with the tail as if it could help. He would dream of being a pet, of something tasty and raw, something better than a rat, and he would dream of chasing a squirrel in the park. Then a dementor would come closer to the cell to eat his dreams. They weren’t picky, the dementors, they would take everything they could and the dreams of a dog weren’t an exception. You get by with what you can in Azkaban, and this rule worked for both the guards, and the prisoners.
“… and he will come back, and he will find his most devoted… and he will see how I suffered for him!”
“Oh, shut the fuck up…” Sirius growled in disgust and looked out of the small window. The storm was getting worse. He turned in a dog and took his waiting spot in front of the door. It had to be today. When dementors bring the food.
The sea was stormy, and it was also cold and unforgiving.
“I will die,” Sirius thought and still kept on swimming, and every inch of his body was screaming with pain. “I will die, and Wormtail will kill the boy…”
He must have lost it when another wave covered Sirius, and then he didn’t think, not in the way people thought. His agony was never-ending because his concept of future deteriorated to the animal level. There wasn’t any future, it didn’t exist. There was cold, there were waves, there was pain, and there was nothing else. The world was divided between the dark sky and the dark water.
The next day the sky was blue and clean, and it was the first thing Sirius Black saw when he opened his eyes.
“I am dead,” he thought and smiled with relief. This smile was far from the charming smile of Sirius Black he once used to be but it still was a smile, even if a crooked version of the real deal.
And then another thought came, and it made him sit up. His body responded with cramps and ache but Sirius didn’t even notice.
“I am free,” Sirius thought and covered his face with his hands even though there was not a living soul around to see him crying.
