Once again, Jim heard Humphrey’s pleading whisper: "The voters... the press... popularity..."
Following his advice was perfectly safe, while stubbornness would only lead to bold decisions, lost votes, and squabbles in the Cabinet.
"The opinion polls are on our side," Humphrey assured him.
But somewhere deep in Jim’s subconscious, doubts still nagged at him.
He remembered Disraeli’s words: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
Humphrey had used all three as bait, and Jim simply couldn’t resist.
