Bernard was waiting in the outer office, just outside the Minister’s door. Hacker and Sir Humphrey were having their weekly meeting, it had been going on for nearly an hour now, without so much as a break. Bernard was bored. To pass the time, he even exchanged a few words with Sir Humphrey’s PPS on the phone. He glanced at the clock again, sighing gloomily. He was stunned that he — the Principal Private Secretary! — had been banished from the room. Did they truly not trust him? Him, a high-flying civil servant who had proven his loyalty and devotion to the Crown time and again. What on earth could they possibly be discussing in there that was so secret..?
