Coming up with a title for a book is a creative process that depends on the genre, content, and atmosphere of the work. Here are a few approaches to help you find a successful title:
Think about what your book is about in one sentence. What is the main idea, conflict, or emotion in it? For example:
- A book about betrayal and revenge.
- A story about love that destroys lives.
- A fantasy world where magic is forbidden.
Write down key words related to the story.
2. Choose an approach to the title
There are several ways to come up with a title:
By the main character or location
If the character or location is unique, the title can be related to it.
Examples include Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Rebecca, Treasure Island.
By a central event or subject matter
The title may refer to an important element of the plot.
Examples include “The Da Vinci Code,” “The Alchemist,” “Game of Thrones.”
By major theme or conflict
If a book deals with deep issues, the title may reflect them.
Examples: “Crime and Punishment,” “War and Peace,” “Life on Loan.”
By atmosphere or emotion
A title can convey a feeling that the reader is experiencing.
Examples: 'Darkness at the end of the tunnel', 'Silent terror', 'Joy at the edge of the abyss'.
Mysterious or intriguing
You can choose a phrase that raises questions.
Examples: “What is the forest hiding”, “Who are you, Mr. Brooks?”, “Why did he do that?”
3. Check how the title sounds
- It should be easy to remember.
- Not too long (1-4 words is best).
- Unique (check the internet to see if there is a similar book).
- Appropriate for the genre (romantic for a love story, hard-hitting for a thriller).
4. Test the options
Ask friends or potential readers:
- Which title would interest them?
- Which option sounds better?
- What do they think a book with that title is about?
5. Refine it if you need to
Sometimes a good title doesn’t come right away. You can:
- Take a quote from the book.
- Play with words (change the order, add a metaphor).
- Simplify a title that is too complicated.
Examples of successful titles in different genres

Detective: “Murder on the Orient Express”, “Ten Negroes”.
