Chapter 22

A thin man in his fifties with a small suitcase gets into Azriel’s car and asks to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible.
- Are you sick? — The driver asks him with feigned concern.
- No, I’m not! I’m a doctor and I’m on my way to surgery! — exclaimed the man and made Azriel’s choice easier.
- Ah, I see! Are you a surgeon? — he inquired.
- Yes, — replied the doctor briefly, — Why these questions?
- I don’t like to ride in silence. I’ve had it since childhood — I always need someone to talk to! — explained the cab driver.
- I see. You know, I’ve heard about it somewhere. But it’s a rare phenomenon, I think you’re just sociable, — diagnosed the passenger, smiling broadly and warmly, — Would you like me to tell you something else?
- I’d love to! — Azriel exclaimed. He was glad that he wouldn’t have to extract information himself.
- Anyway, why am I in such a hurry? A man was brought to our hospital, he almost died in a car accident, they sent me the pictures, as I realized, it will have to be assembled in pieces… Shall I show you? — the doctor asked.
- Uh… No, I don’t think so. I’m sure it’s a very scary sight! I don’t have such strong nerves! — exclaimed the driver.
- That’s true. But I hope the operation will go well, the man said.
- Can they do it without you? — Asriel asked, thinking.
- No, I’m the best surgeon in the hospital, I don’t want to brag,” the doctor replied, and the cab driver realized that he would soon have another client.
- Wow, I didn’t know I was carrying such an important person,” the driver joked, hiding his sadness. But the passenger seemed to notice it.
- Is something wrong? — he asked anxiously.
- No, nothing’s wrong,” Azriel mumbled.
- Okay,” the man shrugged.
- We’re here, goodbye! — The driver said goodbye, — Have a good operation!
- Thank you, goodbye! — The best surgeon of the hospital smiled and walked towards the entrance of the main building.
