Chapter 8

A man in his thirties with lively eyes and a funny goatee gets into Azriel’s car. You can see he’s in a hurry. He asks to be taken to the research center. The cab driver hums contentedly and drives off.
- Do you have some kind of conference there?
- What? No! I’m on the verge of a scientific breakthrough! I’ve almost completed my research!
The man speaks with such enthusiasm and inspiration that Azriel smiles again and presses harder on the gas.
- And in what field of discovery?
- Genetics. That’s just brilliant! I’ve created a machine that can read the mind of any animal!
- It’s a good idea indeed. They’ll probably give you the Nobel Prize for it.
- I’d be delighted!
- And on whom have you conducted experiments?
- Dogs, hamsters, parrots.
- And what did you do?
- Well, it’s not very pleasant for me to remember, but the animals sat for hours with devices on their heads. And some of them had to have their skulls opened….
Asriel was slowly turning in the opposite direction.
- Weren’t you ashamed?
- A little. But the important thing is that the experiments were successful and we were able to set up the device.
- What do animals think about?
- Nothing in particular. It’s all commensurate with their level of intelligence. For example, hamsters think mostly about food, dogs and their master and play, …
- Interesting. How many animals have you killed?
- Again, it was all very unpleasant. About a hundred animals have died, as many in an abnormalized state.
- That’s terrible!
- It’s acceptable. Especially since it’s a scientific breakthrough. It was worth the sacrifice.
-Well, we’re here. Good luck to you. I hope you get the Nobel after all.
After tossing the driver a few bills, the man jumped out of the car and sped off in the direction of the research center.
