1. The second plan

1. Mrs. Hudson
Granada
Rosalie Williams' character turned out to be very canonical, but rather bland. She brings tea here and doesn’t let street boys in to see Holmes. I don’t remember, maybe he did something else, but that’s all I remember. and so, the actress is suitable for the role, her appearance is quite suitable, everything is according to the canon, but on the screen it’s boring.
BBC
Oona Stubbs is the complete opposite of everyone else. She’s the widow of a drug lord here, drives a sports car, ships (maybe I won’t say the literary synonym out loud, otherwise I’ll get sick again) of her tenants, hates Mycroft, calling him a reptile, and... doesn’t wear tea. How is that? Mrs. Hudson doesn't wear tea? This is already a huge difference. In general, yes, she is a cool granny, but Mrs. Hudson was very repulsive to me. When she appears in the frame, you think that’s it, the thorns are gone! Save yourself who can!
USSR
Soviet Mrs. Hudson looked like her namesake from Granada. She also wears tea, and when the screenwriter suggested expanding her role, Rina Zelenaya objected, saying that she had never played furniture before. She has little text, but she makes every phrase a masterpiece: get out, bandit; I’ll go make us some coffee; he sees your reflection in the coffee pot, etc. And the welcome back scene. Holmes just won my heart! According to the script, Watson faints at the sight of his friend. And Rina Vasilievna apparently liked this idea, and her heroine also lost consciousness, which frightened the entire film crew. In the last episodes, the actress almost lost her sight, but still continued filming. This is what I understand, dedication to one’s work. After all, not every actress in her 70s will crawl on the floor pretending to be a mannequin. Plus, composer Vladimir Dashkevich even wrote musical accompaniment especially for her «By the fireplace». The name alone says it all. Comfort, warmth, care. The heroes truly value her, they have become each other’s family. This is all that was sorely missing from Western adaptations.
So the point goes to the USSR
2. Mary Watson
Granada
At first, everything is according to the canon: Mary Morstan comes to Holmes for help in the matter of the treasures of Agra. Watson likes her, throughout the series we watch their loving eyes and when the matter is over, you think, hurray, wedding! Mary says goodbye to them and... leaves? That's it, hang up, these two won't get married and won't even admit their feelings. Miss Morstan is no different from hundreds of similar clients, she means.
BBC
Oh, god, Mary-Mary... She’s not Sherlock’s client, but that doesn’t stop her from marrying John (the wedding episode is my favorite)). Needless to say, the story with the sign of four was turned upside down? No. What’s more interesting is that Mary, God forgive me! assassin... that's not even self-defense! She's an assassin! Now is this not only not condemned in society, but also encouraged?! It’s not enough that you, against your will, begin to doubt Mary’s feelings for her husband. She married him just to kill Magnussen (who doesn’t know, this is our Milverton). And she had no feelings for John. And if there were... No, I don’t believe in them. Oh, and how he throws himself in front of a bullet. The speed of a pistol bullet is 300-400 m s, the distance is 1 meter, the bullet is already in flight. Mary, who is 1.5 meters away, jumps across and makes it in time. If you calculate the speed, it turns out 1890 km h in 0.0028 s. for comparison, formula 1 will be inferior to it by ≈11000 times.
USSR
The only interpretation where everything is according to the canon. Although the series is difficult to understand, stretched over 2 episodes with an insert with Irene Adler (her is a different story), Mary was cute and simple. She and Watson fall in love with each other in a purely human way. And when the treasures were gone, Watson could easily marry her and not think that they were whispering behind his back that he married for money. everything is much simpler, but that doesn’t make it any worse.
Point goes to the USSR
3. Mycroft Holmes
Granada
I’ve been waiting for Mycroft for a long time. Waited. And I didn’t understand who they showed me. Why is he old? Why is he gray? Why does he always have a handkerchief in his hands? Why does he constantly sneeze? Why doesn't he look like Sherlock? Is their difference exactly 7, not 27 years? These are not even outrages, these are just questions that arose while watching. The actor does not suit this role at all. Mycroft was added to several more episodes besides the canon ones.I would really like it if the actor weren't so repulsive. No, I'm very disappointed.
BBC
Externally, a collective image of all officials, deputies, etc. — just as disgusting and repulsive. It just pisses me off when people call him fat! where is the extra weight? I understand that according to the book, Mycroft is overweight and burly, but then at least you could have found a fatter actor, but the screenwriter and producer are more economical. And I’m also angry about the relationships in their family. Sherlock is an "idiot", constantly creates problems for Mr. British government, from which the latter constantly has to get him out, as well as solve the problems of his parents, and in return he will receive not a basic "thank you", but a new one a portion of dirt addressed to you.I don’t know if they really hate him, or if they want others to think so, like «emotions, feelings, affections and your... ugh... love are alien to us!», but in fact they are hiding their weakness. I don't know.
USSR
God, he came down from the cover of mine ideas and imagination! There is something about him that makes you want to turn to him «your honor» and obey his order. Imperiousness. He is an influential and intelligent man with a noble face and great connections. Besides, he really looks like Sherlock! And also these calls «my boy», and in response «dear Mycroft»and without an ounce of sarcasm or mockery! – a separate species. art. By the way, Boris Klyuev also auditioned for the role of Sherlock Holmes, but cameraman Yuri Veksler gave the director an ultimatum: «If there is no Livanov (Sherlock Holmes), there will be no me». So it didn’t work out.
Another point for the USSR
4. Sir Henry Baskerville
Granada
Please don't laugh and take my word for it. For the life of me, I couldn’t remember Sir Henry. In general, of all the dogs, I remember Mortimer... No, Mortimer’s dog for how shamelessly she climbed onto the sofa with her dirty feet. And how Holmes collected letters from the post office. All.
BBC
Lost, big-eared boy Henry Knight. The only thing I can add is that... I would also go crazy if my glass wall looked out onto a gloomy forest and swamps!
USSR
Nikita Mikhalkov. There's nothing to add. Some find him too comical. But guys! He was remembered! The only henry you don't have to google to remember! What is one fur coat worth? In addition, it is worth remembering that Sir Henry was born and raised in Canada. He is an American, so Nikita Sergeevich played not a sophisticated Englishman, but, I won’t say a cheeky, but such a moving and emotional American.
Another point for the USSR
5. Irene Adler
It’s difficult to choose the best Irene, because... I didn't like any of them.
Granada
Canon. She is a lady, well-mannered, honest... well, let her also be beautiful. I don't know, say what you want, but she's the best. She is neutral, she is nothing. But at least she’s in the frame! And as we know, nothing is better than bad. Plus I finally understood what was going on there.
BBC
Can I not comment on this please! some kind of bad episode that I finished with tears. The main differences from the canon and from other film adaptations are that, firstly, the creators made something so mundane and boring out of an unattainable star. Secondly, the series does not make Irene Adler smart. Sherlock couldn't find the password only because he overestimated his opponent. Everywhere Adler acted alone, she is not a genius, but she is smart. Secondly, she is repulsive because of how rotten and vile she is shown, there is not a drop of honor left in her (she is, first of all, a man of her word), she disdains the secrets of her clients, sets everyone up, and only for the sake of money and private gain. I don't know what Sherlock saw in her, other than her appearance.
USSR
Do you know what I remember about Miss Adler? you won't guess. the color of the dress. Honestly. Well, Irene, she’s almost interesting, but no, interest in her eludes no matter how hard you try to catch it. she appeared in the frame 4 times, not counting the photograph. But we watched how Holmes looked at her with loving eyes. The catch is that we evaluate not the detective’s love and Livanov’s brilliant acting, but the very reason for this love. I'm disappointed in her, unfortunately .
But Granada found its first, and I hope not the last, point in this heroine.
6. Inspector Lestrade
I never would have thought that it would be so difficult to choose Lestrade! They are all sweethearts! But since I started...
Granada
Well, that’s exactly what I imagined. Why was there so little of it?! I still can’t remember their ambush at Six Napoleons without smiling. In general, I love this series the most. she is sweet, funny, and brilliant. Well, Lestrade is a darling, but he doesn’t seem to have his own opinion. Follows Holmes with his tail, won’t say too much.
BBC
He looks like Lestrade from Granada. He unquestioningly obeys Sherlock’s orders, as if Scotland Yard is unable to take a breath of air without him.
USSR
In the Soviet version, the inspector, although dumb, never admits it because of his ego, looks down on Holmes, and in fact, because of this, he becomes an even bigger idiot. This is better than the dunce who runs after Sherlock like a dog.
The choice was difficult, but I will still choose the Brondukov, the last point goes to the USSR.
Result:
USSR 5 points
Granada 1 point
BBC 0 points
Summarise. The characters of the Soviet version are well written and performed. You fall in love with each of them, and in the last episodes you generally look at them as if they were old friends.
In Granada the heroes are canonical, but very bland and colorless. They don’t catch on and are forgotten after the end of the series.
BBC, on the contrary, went too far with the grotesque and hyperbole. All the characters, although well written, were overly exaggerated and "cloying".
Notes:
Bright Memory of Rosalie Williams, Una Stubbs, Rina Zelenaya, Charles Gray, Boris Klyuev and Borislav Brondukov🙏🏽🕯💔
If anyone writes comments about Irene Adler from the BBC, please call her simply "this woman"!
