Chapter 5

I woke up to the fact that my phone was ringing disgustingly loudly somewhere on the bedside table. Opening my eyes, I pressed the call button. – Hello? – Are you asleep?! – My brother's surprised voice rang out. – It's almost one o'clock in the afternoon! It's not like you, Kristina. – Well, yes. So what? After all, I have an unscheduled "vacation," I retorted. – How are you? – It's okay. But if I don't leave the hotel for at least half an hour, then I do not know what I will do. Alexander, I can't take it anymore! I'm going crazy in this room! – Okay, I'll come pick you up and take you to your apartment. I found something there, you'll be interested to take a look. Get ready, I'll come for you in twenty minutes. – Okay, I'm waiting. Getting out of bed, I began to pack. I put on black jeans, a cream thin sweater, a black leather jacket and boots, and put on makeup. Pulling my hair back into a ponytail, I smiled at my reflection. I took my phone and keys and left the room. – Good morning. – Morning, – I said, turning around. Donal was standing behind me. The man was wearing a dark gray three-piece suit with a white shirt. And he looked very pleased. Is it really because of yesterday? – Why aren't you at work? – I asked. – Today I have a free day and practice only after lunch. Why aren't you at work? – I'm just on my way, – closing the doors, I slowly walked down the corridor, the surgeon following me. Entering the elevator, we found ourselves alone again in a small room. Images of last night began to flash in my head. I turned around and looked at the surgeon. – Donal, yesterday… – Kristina, I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me yesterday, – the man smiled guiltily. – I won't lie, I liked you. Maybe we can go out tonight? – I'll think about it, – I smiled, blushing. A second later, the elevator doors open, letting us out. – See you tonight, then, – Donal smiled and headed in the opposite direction. After seeing the man off, I went outside and saw my brother's car. I walked quickly to the car and got into the front seat. – Alex, is something wrong? You look pale, – I frowned, watching my brother. – Let's go to your house and I'll tell you everything. – Okay, – I agreed, feeling a growing anxiety in my chest. We arrived at my house pretty quickly. When I entered my apartment, I noticed traces of large-caliber bullets on the wall and furniture. But, the apartment was cleaned and smelled fresh. – Let's sit down, – the Jew suggested. I sat down on the sofa and looked at Kravets questioningly. – Yesterday, I stopped by your place because the neighbors said you were drowning them. Now, everything is fine. I was about to leave when I saw your coat, with an envelope sticking out of the pocket. It was a letter. It wasn't printed, so I decided to see what it was. You never know, you got into something there again. And what was inside it... well, read it for yourself, – my brother said, taking an envelope out of his coat pocket. – This is a letter from Hamilton, I forgot to open it, – I said, picking up the paper. Taking out the folded sheets, I began to read its contents. With each line, my eyebrows crept up, and after a minute tears flowed from my eyes. Putting my hands on my knees, I looked at Kravets. – This c-can't be h-happening, – I whispered. – Maybe, – my brother said. – You're Christina Hamilton. From what I heard, I just burst into tears more. In the envelope were the documents on the marriage certificate of my mother and Edward Hamilton. And also my birth certificate, where Hamilton is listed in the father column. Suddenly, they hugged me and began stroking my back. But, Mom never said that she got married?! And I've never seen my birth certificate.… Did she lie to me? That explains why I was so attracted to Hamilton. Now, I just have to find out the whole truth! – Hush, you see, you've found your father. There's a business card with a number inside. I think you can call and you can meet and talk. I'll be there, Kristina, – Kravts said, taking my hands. – I need some time to think about it. I will definitely meet you, but only a little later. Now, I'm not ready yet, – I whispered, wiping the tears from my cheeks. – The day after tomorrow, I'll take you to a house outside the city. There, you can be safe and more or less free. And in a couple of days, new documents will be ready in your name. And permission to fly in a private plane abroad. Everything will be official and according to the law. You can start a new life, just like you wanted, Kristina. – Thank you, – I whispered, hugging Kravets tighter.

An hour later, Alexander drove me back to the hotel. After entering the room, I sat on the sofa in the living room and read the documents again. For so many years, I considered myself fatherless. I was already desperate that I would ever find my father. I was seething with anger and anger. Why did he leave his mother? Why didn't he come back to her? Why after all these years? Why didn't you tell me about it personally? And if, after learning the truth, I don't want to see him anymore? There were too many questions in my head, which made everything swim in front of my eyes and my head spin. Curled up in a ball, I clutched the documents to my chest and fell asleep unnoticed.

Arriving at the hotel, Donal turned off the engine, when suddenly his phone rang. – Hello? – Gleason, – the voice on the other end of the line said hoarsely. – Maurice, – Donal grinned, gripping the steering wheel. – I know that the girl is at the hotel. Check your guys more carefully next time, – the man laughed hoarsely and hung up. – Christina! Donal shouted, running out of the car.

I woke up to someone knocking insistently on the door. – Room cleaning! – No need to thank you! – I answered loudly, propping myself up on my elbows. The knocking stopped. Getting up from the couch, I looked around. It was already dark outside the window. Putting the documents in an envelope. I went to the bathroom. After washing my face and touching up my makeup, I decided to pack my things so that I could go to my new father tomorrow. I needed answers to my questions! Quickly putting all my things in a backpack, I was surprised how everything fit. Suddenly, there was an explosion. Barely able to stand on my feet, I froze. The walls shook and the fire alarm sounded. Grabbing my briefcase, I ran to the door. No matter what happens there, I urgently need to run. I managed to open the doors only for the second time. When I went out into the hallway, I saw flames erupting from the next room and a fire that was spreading rapidly along the walls. People started running out of the rooms and crowding into the hallway. Panic began, and thick, gray smoke billowed. Suddenly, someone grabbed my arm and pulled me forward to the emergency exit. A few minutes later, I found myself on the stairs of the emergency exit. – Donal! – I cried out, seeing the man anxiously looking around. It was as if he was looking out or looking for someone in the crowd. Everyone was screaming and crying, pushing each other on the stairs and running everywhere. Fearing for their lives, everyone thought only of themselves, turning into an animal. Pausing on the landing, I stood in the middle of this madness and tried to collect my thoughts. My head was buzzing from the explosion, and the whole world seemed to have gone under water. – Christina! How are you?! Is everything all right?! – the surgeon said, grabbing my face with both hands. A second later, it's like I'm coming out of the water. – Yes, everything is fine, – I smiled, feeling alive again, as well as the adrenaline rush in my blood. It was necessary to get out of this madness immediately. Alexander. I needed to call him urgently. – Then let's go, we need to get out! Taking my hand, Donal pulled me down. The stairs were crowded, but we went down slowly and steadily. Twenty minutes later, we were outside. Taking a deep breath, I looked up at the upper floors of the hotel. – What happened there? What could have exploded there anyway? – I whispered, looking at the doctor. – It's just some kind of madness! – Let's go, – grabbing my hand, the man led me to the cars. – Do you have any relatives here to whom you can be taken? – It's not worth it, really. I'll call my brother now, he'll come and pick me up, – I said, stopping by the black car. – Christina, – Donal said, taking my briefcase and putting it in the back seat of the car. – I'm afraid for you. I beg. Let me take you to a safe place. – Okay, – I said. – That's great, – the man smiled, opening the front door for me. I frowned as I got into the car. Something's not right here. Somewhere deep inside me, my instincts screamed that I had to run. Donal got into the car and started the engine, blocking the doors. Wait a minute.… – Wait, where did you get the car? After all, you said yourself that you came to improve your skills? – I frowned, looking at the surgeon. – I rented it, – Donal smiled. – Kristina. Suddenly, Gleason leaned towards me and froze a few millimeters from my lips. Touching my cheek with one hand, the man stroked me with his thumb, brushing my lower lip. Frozen, I stared into the doctor's eyes, waiting for a kiss. – Here you are, – Donal whispered, and his eyes glittered dangerously. – What? – I whispered, not immediately understanding the meaning of the words. A second later, a syringe with some kind of substance sticks into my shoulder. Twitching, I tried to push the man away. Fear slowly enveloped me. You idiot. What a fool I am! Suddenly, everything swam before my eyes. – Stupid girl, – Donal laughed, and that was the last thing I saw and heard before I plunged into darkness.
