Scrapbooking

       Through bleak October nights, misty shadows walk through forests and groves. They were taking this form and substance all through the summer, and now their time has come. Now they roam looking for ghostly milky caps or chantarelles, and chase each other with ghostly knives away from the good spots. Only under the full moon do the spirits get a glimmer of memory of their homes, and they turn to forest paths and walk back, checking under every bush. Take heed of them! For if they find a living human being, they will surround him or her and ask in voices akin to the rustle of dry leaves and sighs of wind gusts about the traveller’s origin or destination, or the mushrooms the traveller has seen, and then they will relate the forest’s mysteries until their whisper fills up the conscience of the unfortunate human. The traveller will forget his home and name and wander deep into the forest, looking under hillocks and stumps, until he is but a ghost, the same as others.
