third chapter

Instantly the calm atmosphere became tense. Now the trainee was witnessing the work, and how instantly Jean's demeanor changed.
As they walked down a couple of corridors, they encountered a female employee with a clearly concerned face.
“What do we have?” asked the supervisor.
“Good morning to you too, Jean," she said quickly and continued to say what was already on her tongue. “Atherosclerosis (Note: Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting the arterial system of the human body, which has a complex nature and is based on genetic prerequisites for the violation of cholesterol metabolism and its deposition in the walls of blood vessels. Atherosclerosis is the process of cholesterol deposition in the vessel wall, and the formation of atherosclerotic plaques that cause narrowing of the artery, with reduced blood flow to the organs (ischemia) and subsequent thrombosis with complete occlusion of the artery (occlusion). The blood supply stops and part or all of the organ dies) the patient lies in our hospital. We have tried to solve his problem without intervention, but it has worsened. The arteries need to be punctured, and we estimate that the count could be minutes.”
Armin was probably the most nervous person here. Not even the girl was as scared as he was.
“Have you prepared everything?”
“Yes.”
Kirshtein quickened his step, and the girl began to catch up with him and only now noticed the newcomer.
“Hello, and you are…”
“Armin! I'm a trainee!”
“My name is Charlotte. Are you a future intensive care specialist?”
Despite her obvious fidgeting, her colleague tried to adopt a softer and more pleasant tone with Armin.
“I wouldn't say that. It's just that I was assigned to Jean for some reason.”
“Well,‖ the girl threw a glance at the man, intuitively walking toward the office. “ He's a pretty good employee, and working with him will do you good.
“Do you often have to do surgeries here?”
“A little less often than in regular hospitals. But there are situations where we have to help groups.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, very often research groups have someone in their care to study diseases. If something happens, we come in and help save them.”
The trio entered the operating room. The smell of all the medicines blended into one, becoming extremely acrid but intoxicating. That scent settled in his nose and Armin couldn't smell anything else. His eyes began to sting, but it was bearable. One of the doctors was already standing by the operating table, waiting for the main ones. On the table itself, a patient was already lying on the table. His whole body, except for his legs and head, was covered with a thin blanket. There was no fear or discouragement in his eyes.
Charlotte handed the medical mask to the boy and began to take the necessary instruments, preparing them.
Arlert carefully moved closer to the man lying on the operating table as if he might wake him up, but so far he was conscious. He didn't look at the doctors in any way, only at the lamp aimed at his leg.
After a couple of minutes, Jean entered the room. He spread his arms like Jesus and Charlotte threw his robe over him and helped him to button it. Only then did the trio surround him, not even exchanging words. It was like a dance where all the movements were well memorized.
“Mr. Günther, try to breathe deeply now," the shaten woman said softly and put an oxygen mask on him.”
The man was a little surprised that the air stopped flowing into his lungs. His pupils darted back and forth to one doctor and the other, as if looking to them for an explanation of everything that was happening. But after a couple of seconds, a pleasant relaxation was felt. A tingling sensation spread throughout my body, and my limbs softened. The eyes slowly closed, and the man fell into sleep.
“Come on, Jean," Charlotte said, and the man took hold of the tank. Armin stood right at his foot, and Kirschtein pushed it away. There was already a long incision sewn up where the antisclerotic plaque had formed. Apparently the doctors were already studying it or trying to understand the specifics of his disease.
Having torn the stitches and, once again, with a medical knife enlarging the healed wound, the doctor carefully pushed a thick thread through. And he did it quite deeply. When he realized that it was enough, he turned to Armin.
“Do you know how to work with this?”
“Yes. It's a balloon. You need it to remove the plaque.”
The cylinder itself looked like a pump with a barometer on the end.
“Right, now we've inserted the intraducer, which should stop the blood flow. And now we're going to insert a balloon behind it. “ it looked like a deflated transparent balloon. “ You have to inflate it with this device. Do you know what the optimal pressure should be?”
“Yes. 6-14 atm!”
“That's right. Try inflating it yourself.”
Arlert took hold of the device and began to gradually inflate the tank. The mark was reached rather quickly, and the blond fixed it, so that it wouldn't deflate.
“That's it, it's ready," Jean reported.
“So quick and easy…”
“There's nothing wrong with this operation. There's nothing wrong with this operation. So if you do them the same way.”
“Well done, Armin," Charlotte praised him in passing. ” I'm very pleased with your work, but he's from Berthold's department and you, Jean, should write him a report.”
“Then you're on, kid.”
“What?! I've never even had an internship!”
“He just needs to know how to deal with patients in a hospital, that's all. Or what, he's just gonna watch me write a report?”
“Fair enough. All right, but only until the break!”
“I'll be fine," Jean threw off his gloves and left the operating room.
“Who's Berthold, if it's no secret?”
“This is the head of the Surgical Research Group.”
“Wow... what exactly was he doing there?”
The pair helped a colleague remove the gurney with the patient from the room, and they wheeled her to the inpatient unit.
“Well, apparently, they were studying his atherosclerosis. “Maybe that's part of the plan. Maybe that's part of the plan, but we'll find out in the reports. Charlotte pointed to the unconscious patient. - As soon as you're done with the surgery, you should get him on a gurney to the right room. If he is able to walk, be sure to escort him. The room is assigned at the observation post at the beginning of the hospital.
“That is, you, when you are carrying, or leading the patient, must go to the....”
“The duty officer.”
“the duty officer. And... ask him to... what?”
“He just sees what rooms are available and prescribes. That's all. It doesn't take more than three minutes.”
“Well, that explains it. What's next?”
“And then…”

Gradually, the hospital became a bustling place. Although there were not many people today. The research departments continued to work as usual, monitoring their patients and their illnesses.
But the guest many were expecting had returned.
Eren didn't go in through the main entrance, but did it through an alternate entrance leading directly to one of the inpatient units. Thanks to this, he wasn't noticed by as many staff members at once.
Yeager had been gone for over a week. There hadn't even been much time to contact his subordinates, but more so his colleagues, and see how things were going.
Of course, there wouldn't be a collapse in a week, but Eren was worried willy-nilly.
After passing some corridors and warmly greeting the nurses and medical brothers who got in the way, he made his way to the office of the Head Nurse of the Emergency Department.
He was lucky, Mikasa was there.
The white walls and neat look of the room harmonised with her black hair and some of the elements she'd changed herself: a Newton's Cradle was on the desk, somewhat muffling the cooling system of a scratched laptop. On the wall, near the extended cupboard, were fabric posters with various abstract but beautiful designs. You could see familiar cute outlines in them. There was also a persistent smell of sandalwood in the cabinet, agitating the nostrils. Ackerman was very fond of incense.
“Mikasa, I told you not to disable my alarm system.”
The girl paid no attention to the guest. Although she heard someone enter.
Her gaze was on the laptop, and periodically fell on the keyboard to remember the location of all the keys. But hearing such a familiar voice, the girl turned her head sharply. The calm gaze slept. Her eyes quickly darted to the entrant and ran over his body, making sure that the girl really saw who she saw.
“Eren" Mikasa said on an exhale.
A slight smile appeared on her face. She quickly stood up and walked over to her colleague.
The embrace was still as reverent on both sides.
“And I didn't ask her to switch it back on.”
Her hands remained on his shoulders.
“You do realise it's for your own safety, don't you? “You know that. If your incense catches fire, that's it.
“I" the girl pulled back and gently took the smoking stick, "I only light them when I'm here," she said and exhaled the rest of the sandalwood smoke directly into Eren's face, extinguishing it.
“You make sure Zeke doesn't find out about your tricks.”
“You're helping me for a reason," Mikasa murmured lightly, setting the ash tray back on one of the shelves.
"Let's go for a walk. I just sat down when I got here.”
With pleasure.
The colleagues left the office and walked down the corridor, greeting almost everyone they met.
“What did I miss while I was on a business trip? What did I miss?”
“Not that anything significant happened," Mikasa wrapped her arm around Yeager's, and they began to walk closely together. “ No. The virologists had recently received some new equipment. Zeke had sorted out the suppliers, and the deal had been approved. And now he hopes there shouldn't be any problems with this supplier.”
At the beginning of the summer, Zeke had a confrontation with a French supplier. The equipment purchase was made in error and was over the actual amount.
The French court sided with Zeek, so the supplier suffered losses and still had to deliver the equipment at the original price.
“Zeke's got me all worked up about it. It's a good thing my dad hung in there. I wouldn't have been able to take it.”
“Did he go to all the meetings?”
“Yeah. He flew out with me, told me how the lawsuit was going, and left for the airport.”
“Well, it's a good thing it ended that way. I guess Zeke wasn't the only one complaining to you about the government taking away his benefits.”
“How's it going with you? You were still complaining to me about the workload when you left.”
The doctors began to descend the stairs, intuitively stepping on the steps as they looked at each other.
“It's actually gotten easier on the work itself because with the new people coming in, they've been able to distribute the work.“ Mikasa sighed, remembering all those daily routines. “ It's just a bit difficult to train them. I don't want to leave them behind, they might do something wrong.”
“What about Levi, Petra, Robert, after all. We've got enough senior resuscitators.”
“We've got a few trainees each, if not more. Even when there's no work, they're not idle.” Ackerman sighed languidly and slowed her step noticeably. Eren didn't count on it and pulled the girl forward out of inertia. “So far they're doing fine, but if it continues like this....”
“Don't worry. Permanent recruitment is already ending and this is probably the last wave. And it'll soon be easier for everyone. And especially you" he concluded affectionately and made a "Boop" on his nose.
“Oh, I really hope so," Mikasa said with a warm and easy smile and looked into the guy's blue eyes, which stood out well against the white of the corridor.
“And if you do even better, I'll give you some unscheduled time off.”
“No, no, no, no! Don't do that!”
“Mikasa, if we're not to meet at work, we have to schedule meetings a week in advance. And I've never seen you see anyone but me. There's nothing wrong with the hospital if you take a few days to yourself.”
“Well, actually, we go out a lot with Annie. Well. Rainer sometimes manages to get me out of the house.”
“That doesn't change what I said.”
“Eren, I knew exactly what I was getting into. And so far I've been able to bear the strain," the woman said firmly and clearly.”
"And I'm very happy with that. But please don't forget about you. “
That's strange. But when the lad said this, the woman lowered her gaze bashfully. Like a child who had been admonished. But the words did, indeed, make her think. Say it to any of the other colleagues, she would have waved her hand. Eren was an authority to her, someone she respected, if she didn't feel otherwise. So Mikasa decided to... really listen.
“Okay.”
Ackerman lifted her head and gave her colleague a slight smile.
She was only bitching about the fact that the girl had actually heard those words. Yeager smiled back in the same way, and the pair walked briskly further down the corridor.
