Chapter 20

Walter quickly came to his senses and, making a stony expression on his face, left the office, but Heinrich knew perfectly well what was hidden behind that face. Walter sat down and waited, he knew that they would not be able to find anything, because Friedrich had all the evidence. However, his subconscious told him that not everything was so simple and today they would still fall somewhere on this fragile ice, on which they were walking not for the first time. He sat in his own waiting room, all on pins and needles. He fidgeted, looked around, touched his hair many times. All this betrayed internal anxiety and a desire to calm myself down.
Charlotte, looking at this performance, was very happy with the picture that had emerged. He appeared before her in a different light. He no longer seemed so powerful, menacing and serious. Now he looked more like a small animal that would soon die from his own stupidity. She also looked at her now ex-girlfriend, who was ready to give her life for him right now. Charlotte understood that she, too, would go to prison, like Frederick, like all those who took up arms against her and Augustus in this period of life.
Fifteen minutes later they left his office, and Heinrich, judging by his facial expression, really didn’t find anything in him. However, it was clear that this was not the end and he knew what to cling to.
“Well,” Walter approached him victoriously.
“We didn’t find anything, but this is not the end.” Walter, you understand that you,” he leaned towards him, speaking in his ear, “are a murderer.”
— In any case, I ask you not to create such a mess in my office again. And warn about this in advance,” He, with the air of a humiliated man, walked into his office. And Henry went to Charlotte.
— Where do you think the poison might be? — he asked this question and puzzled Charlotte.
The girl just shrugged, she was afraid to come close to Walter’s office, because he might try to shift some of the blame onto her.
— I don’t know. Perhaps Lina,” she looked at her, “however, I’m not sure that now you can search her or touch her personal belongings.” Maybe Friedrich’s. But I don’t know what you’ll come to him with.
— Yes, it is true. Even though a trial is due soon, we can’t get close to it. We can’t even confirm their connection to Walter.
“I’m afraid this is all pointless.”
— Okay, I’ll go think. Thank you for August, he really needs your support now. He’s supposed to be released soon, so I think he’ll have a couple of days, but I don’t know where he’ll be.
— He will live with me. I think that soon everything will fall into place,” Charlotte lied, she knew that no one would just let him go, so she would have agreed on better terms.
“Let’s hope so,” they shook hands, and Henry left.
Lina overheard a conversation about August’s temporary transfer from prison. Something had to be done and urgently. She headed to Walter’s office.
— Who else? “Walter shouted at her angrily.
“Walter, it’s me, I have a plan that will help avoid problems.”
— Lina! — he shushed the girl, — don’t you dare carry out any plans, don’t you dare engage in amateur activities. Just what I said. I think we’ve already discussed this!
“Walter, I’m ready to put poison in his food.” Or shoot, even stab. Just… marry me, and then kill me. I want to be your wife, but I don’t want to answer for a crime.
— Lina, do you think what you are saying? Even if you take everything upon yourself, I’m already under investigation. This will not save the situation; there is no need for such sacrifices. Lina, I don’t have time to convince you, do as I say, that’s all.
— Walter! — the girl hugged him from behind and cried bitterly, “I’ll never see you then.” I can’t forget you, you can’t even imagine what it will be like!
“Lina, I understand you,” he turned to face her and took her chin, “but please, don’t rush.” You don’t need to kill everyone in your path, that’s not how it works. You need to do everything subtly and very carefully,” he kissed the girl and it worked. She clearly relaxed and trusted him again.
Walter barely escaped disaster, but he felt that she wouldn’t just let it go. He needed to meet with Friedrich. He decided to go to him. However, he understood that he was now clearly under surveillance. Damn them, now you need to move three times more carefully. He decided to go under cover of darkness. It was always safer this way.

He was waiting for him in their favorite place — in the basement. He sat and looked at his watch, constantly glancing at the door. It was unusually cold today. However, compared to the weather, Walter’s soul was really cold. Walter was already beginning to think that Friedrich had forgotten or would not come and would have to go to the office. Today was Wednesday, which means the meeting had to take place, even despite the hurricane. They didn’t agree. They both just knew that if it was Wednesday, it meant they had a meeting. If the meeting was cancelled, they either called or informed us in advance. But when Walter stood up to leave, he appeared on the threshold.
“Walter, sorry, I’m late,” Friedrich began to take off his coat.
“Yes, I’m aware,” he sat down in his seat irritably.
— So, what’s the news? — Friedrich relaxed and sat down on a chair that stood on the other side of the table.
— The news is most terrible, Friedrich. I am suspected of those murders, not today — tomorrow they will reveal you too,” Walter, having said this, took a sip of cognac from a flask.
“It can’t be,” Friedrich took off his cap. “Let me have a drink,” he took the cognac Walter offered.
— Maybe, as you can see. There will be a trial at the end of the week or beginning of next. They came to my office today, did a search, thank God, they didn’t find anything. Although I doubt it, they may have been spying on me. I don’t know what to do, Friedrich.
— Calm down, we still have time.
— There is time! “Walter jumped up and shouted at Friedrich. — What time? What are you going to do? Should we blame everything on Lina and Eva? Is this your plan? They will still find their ends, they are already targeting me. And your boss, or whoever he is for you. Do you think they won’t contact him either? Friedrich, we need to confess, they will not spare us, it is useless to deny.
— Walter, don’t freak out, please! This is not such a hopeless situation. Let’s stick to the plan.
“I’ll kill you if it doesn’t work, you hear,” Walter looked at him with all seriousness. “I don’t want to go to jail because of you.”
“Before, you had to think when you developed a plan and came to me.
— Okay, I get it, you’re right, I look at things too gloomily.
— That’s it. We’re sticking to the plan. Besides, you still wanted to get rid of this Lina. Why not do this?
“Yes, of course.” Walter wanted to use her and get rid of her, however, in light of recent events, he was not sure that he was doing everything right. He felt sorry for Lina, because hardly anyone would look at him except her with such love. However, he will remember her and always bring flowers to where she dies.
Walter walked and thought about Charlotte. Yes, he will probably forever be a coward and the most terrible of men in her eyes. He lit a cigarette, releasing steam from his mouth and, looking at the lantern, imagined himself as a moth.

Lina realized what she was getting into. August was supposed to be released from his prison cell today. And a trial was scheduled for the day after tomorrow. He had to put himself in order and appear in court, where he would testify against Walter, however, Lina did not want such a development of events.
The day was in full swing, and Lina hoped that she could kill August today with poison. She intended to switch medication bottles. The poison was not the same one that Walter and Friedrich used to poison the workers; it was easy to recognize.
She entered using a fake pass. It wasn’t a problem for her. She walked along small narrow corridors. Her heart was pounding, she was worried that if something went wrong, she would die right there, shooting herself in the forehead. She will not hesitate, she will not wait. There was nothing left of her life; the meaning of her life was Walter. She wanted to be with him and love him, she was ready to do anything for him. And here is this Charlotte, how could this stupid girl hook him? Today everything will be over. Following Augustus, Charlotte will die. She will shoot her in her own apartment this evening.
Lina entered the block where there were doctors, nurses and many other personnel. She needs to both avert suspicion and get into the pharmacist’s office.
— Madam, who are you? — the unfamiliar doctor asked as soon as the girl understood where she needed to go.
— I am the wife of a prisoner. My husband is feeling bad, help! — Lina portrayed grief on her face and, oddly enough, it worked.
—Which cell is your husband in?
“At eleven, if my memory serves me right,” the doctor immediately ran, and Lina continued her way to the office. Looking around and realizing that the office was open, Lina exhaled. She would still have to fiddle with the keys. She opened the door and began rummaging through the medicines that stood in neat rows on the shelves. She rummaged around and after a while thought that she had made a mistake, but she found the ones she needed and replaced the bottles. She exhaled, but hearing footsteps outside the door, she quietly and quickly left the office as soon as the steps died down.
She did everything right. She walked back and no one, no one could stop her, and why should she? She walked out of the block and almost collided with Charlotte, but managed to turn her back in time as she walked towards the meeting block. She almost got caught. Walking out to the car as quickly as she could so as not to run, she got in, started the engine and drove to the office. Today she had another mission waiting for her. Lina was going to tell Walter everything. If you go with him to the end, then until death.

August was waiting for Charlotte. Today she was supposed to come to him, and after that, when he was put in order, his long dark hair would be cut, and he would wash and eat properly, to the court. August knew that today he would take Bertha’s pills for the last time, because the course of treatment had ended. Unlike Charlotte, whose condition after his imprisonment left much to be desired.
Charlotte and the soldier who was supposed to bring the pills came in to him. August drank the medicine, and the soldier let Charlotte go ahead, they were left alone. He smiled, and she also glowed, as on the first day they met. He looked at her, she at him. They were silent, this was their special ritual that was never broken. How many times he could not look at her while he was sitting. How he valued her. Charlotte looked at him with the same smile and the same love. She was drowning in him, and not only in him, but in everything he was connected with. Half of her world was connected to him. She was afraid of never seeing him again. Lord, she was afraid that he might die someday, she was very afraid and never thought about it.
“August,” she turned to him.
— Yes?
-Are you ready for trial?
“Oh, yes, I’m ready,” he felt a pain that slowly spread from his stomach, and nausea rose to his throat. He realized that he needed to call for help, he needed to tell Charlotte.
— This is so good, listen, I kept wanting to say that my birthday is coming soon. You’re the first…
“What?” he began to breathe quickly, his mouth was covered in blood, his eyes became glassy.
— August, what’s wrong with you?
“Ahhh,” he only managed to say this, covering his mouth with his hand, from which blood was flowing. He didn’t want to scare her.
— Doctor! Fast! “Charlotte screamed and beat on the door so that the security would call the doctors.
“August, hold on,” she saw blood flowing out of him, right onto her white skirt. — August, just don’t close your eyes! — This is the last thing he managed to hear before passing out.
The doctors came in a couple of minutes. Charlotte was picked up and taken away. Her legs were weak—the girl could barely move them. She couldn’t help but look around, slowing down the escorts, at how the doctors were fussing around August. And I couldn’t understand how it happened. It seemed to her as if the whole world was now under water, she froze. She couldn’t believe it. She walked and realized that Walter and Friedrich had penetrated here too. Or not? Most likely this is Lina. She knew about her plan. However, she did not think that she would actually perform it.
