Chapter 19
November 15, 2023 at 11:48 AM
Walter walked along the corridor, he intended to steal August’s personal file and destroy the papers so that suspicion would fall on Wenger and he would be accused of negligence.
Sh-puppy! He wants to push him around, but he’s not mature enough yet. No one would dare dictate to him what to do and what not to do. Walter leaned against the wall. He understands that one wrong step and he will be shot; the Gestapo is not accustomed to stand on ceremony. The man waited; Heinrich needed to leave the office for a short time. Although the matter should be nearby and you wouldn’t have to search for long, I still wanted to be on the safe side.
Finally, judging by the phone call, Heinrich was called somewhere, and he hurriedly left the office. As soon as the footsteps moved away, Walter slipped through the slightly open door. He leafed through the papers rather carefully, then, already realizing that he might not find anything, pulled out the desk drawers one by one. What we were looking for was not found there either. Walter desperately looked around at the shelves with dozens of folders and almost growled: all the roots were tight. He hypnotized the closet for another minute, but he couldn’t make a mess.
Walter checked the corridor — no one — and, as if nothing had happened, went to his room. Irritation bubbled in my chest. The trial cannot be allowed, he and Friedrich agreed that Walter would steal the necessary papers, this gave a faint hope that the hearing would be postponed. Before the new one, they could have come up with something, intimidated Augustus, set up his “suicide” in prison.
Walter had no doubt that his involvement would be discovered first, then, perhaps, Lehmann would be discovered, and those above would be in no danger of anything, even less so. Heinrich turned out to be not as irresponsible as Walter thought. Well, of course, he took the papers with him… The man, leaning on the table, was already smoking his second cigarette. The wait made him nervous; he was used to being in control.
Fright! The phone call rang somewhere in the spine, Walter took a breath. Picked up the phone.
“I’m listening,” he answered coldly.
— Hello. This is Heinrich, come into my office.
The connection was lost. What the hell does he want?
Walter simply didn’t notice Lina coming towards her, and she pressed herself against the wall. The man was not in the mood to pay attention to anyone, and the girl understood this. It’s better not to interfere.
Lina blamed Charlotte for everything; if she hadn’t existed, everything would have remained in its place. Lina decided that she would not even try to seduce Augustus, this was not enough, Charlotte must be destroyed, broken morally. A plan on how to do this was born in the girl’s head almost instantly, and Lina hurried to her desk to think through the details.
Walter entered Heinrich’s office extremely collected, with a mask of everyday dissatisfaction — he had been distracted from his work over some trifle. The owner of the office was in no hurry to say anything, he looked at Walter studyingly, standing at the table, waiting for his true state to seep through the external calm. Heinrich almost smiled, but his eyes to an outside observer would have seemed like news of imminent death.
“Walter Sachs,” Wenger interrupted the tense silence. — Do you know why I called you?
He saw that the defendant’s defense was cracking. Yes, accustomed to testing others morally, Walter gave in when it came to himself. He understood what Heinrich was doing — distracting, trying to get him talking or getting emotional. It is necessary to force the interrogated person to speak as much as possible; sooner or later he will make a mistake. A difficult game, especially since Walter is not obliged to speak or stay here.
— No, I don’t understand why I’m here. You already interrogated me yesterday.
" You won’t get a single extra word from me, Wenger, I’m not that idiotic,” Walter said with all his appearance. Heinrich continued to press:
“New details have surfaced, and quite interesting ones,” he took a printed sheet from a folder on the table.
— And what is it? — Walter folded his hands on his chest, refusing to accept the piece of paper.
“Testimony from residents of the outskirts, whose houses are located close to the camp,” Heinrich did not insist. — It says here that you were seen not far from the object, while you were supposed to be in the Reichstag.
Walter raised his eyebrows pointedly.
“You mean they may have seen someone like me.” You never know who they might have seen, no one knows me there.
Heinrich smiled approvingly. This frightened Walter more than the threats: it means that he had foreseen such a turn of thought.
“I don’t think anyone can just enter the camp.” You are the only one who fits the description. In addition, there was another man with you, whose identity is now being established.
— Maybe they had clearance. You have nothing to show to the court, Wenger.
He narrowed his eyes in satisfaction again.
— Really. Many people now have vision problems, and people in shape are all similar, right?
He extended his wide hand and Walter shook Heinrich’s cold, hard hand. My own fingers seemed limp and wet. This was not their last meeting and both knew it.

They meet once a month and each time is filled with warmth for August, which is a lot even after the icy days of loneliness. Charlotte was already waiting for him, and Augustus was once again amazed at how she had changed in just a month. Previously, meeting her every day, he would not have noticed this, but now he encountered dramatic changes and saw with fear how exhausted she was, that she had lost weight and turned pale.
She lit up with joy as soon as he sat down opposite her and smiled tenderly. He couldn’t look at her enough; even when she was endlessly tired, she was suited to tenderness, blooming despite the circumstances. Someday everything will be fine.
— You heard about the trial. Your case will be considered according to all the rules.
— Yes, I know, Heinrich came to me. I think there will be a trial soon, which I am very happy about, this time we will achieve justice.
— If they don’t punish themselves. August, I really want this. Everything will be returned to them, everything,” and she grinned almost cruelly with her brightly painted lips.
August missed her more and more. The conversation was not enough, although they spent about half an hour together, exchanging words and glances, which sometimes did not happen for whole days in their lives before the man’s imprisonment.
Their time ran out too quickly and August followed her slender silhouette with his eyes.

Heinrich, in his usual way, was thinking about how to present the facts more convincingly so that the trial would be organized as quickly as possible. The enormous responsibility did not weigh on him, convinced that he was doing everything possible. Heinrich knocked and straightened his uniform.
— Come in.
— Good afternoon, Reichsfuehrer.
“Oh, it’s you, Heinrich Wenger, coming through,” the man closed the documents, put his pen aside, showing that he was listening.
— Mr. Reichsführer. Here’s the report. A trial is necessary, Scholz is being held in prison almost illegally, and besides, some details, look at the papers, some details look dubious and require public trial.
“Give me a minute,” the man carefully read the documents. Something interesting caught his attention, and he clearly began to think about something.
— Do you think this is Walter Sachs? — He leaned back in his chair.
— Yes, he and a certain Friedrich Lehmann. Local residents saw them. Walter almost swears that he was not involved, however, according to August, he did it. If we talk about Friedrich, then there is nothing against him yet, but he can go as an accomplice. I would like to request a search warrant for them and their offices. I think we’ll find quite a few.
— What do you think about his secretary?
— Lina?
The man nodded affirmatively.
“I think she will cover for them, I don’t know that Walter promised her, but apparently it’s something serious.” She should also be checked and interrogated; it seems the girl has already returned.
— You’re right. I’ll give you a warrant. Now you can go. I think there will be a trial in the next two days. During this time, try to find something on Friedrich Lehmann, I think since they are connected, it will not be difficult.
— Eat! — He left the office, and, immersed in his thoughts, began to wait for orders.
I wanted to act immediately, without standing on ceremony with the scoundrels. Do the same as Walter did with August, because he deserves it. Henry was infuriated by the injustice of the situation. He is not so stupid as to be childish and impatient, but still young enough to become completely passionate about the matter, taking everything to heart.

Charlotte glanced at her watch, waiting for her lunch break. She wanted to relax and eat, especially since she was really hungry for the first time in a while. She wanted to regain at least some weight, so as soon as everyone had left, she kicked off her shoes and took out several prepared sandwiches.
Charlotte managed to chew one when she noticed that Walter was accompanying her every move from the office with a sheepish, cloudy look. The girl sighed and stood up.
— What? — she approached Zaks.
— You already know, right?! — He breathed fumes on her.
Charlotte unconsciously covered her nose, and then decided not to stand on ceremony.
— You stink.
— Is it true? — Walter swayed. — Have you really started to feel something?
“Walter,” she doused him with a look like ice water.
“You hope that he will come out and save his little Charlotte from the evil Walter,” he walked away and grinned. “But know this, my dear Charlotte, this will not happen.” He will rot behind bars, and you, like a garbage mongrel who did not appreciate my love, will be forever chained to me.
He tried to grab her chin, but Charlotte pulled away in disgust.
— Is this what you imagine? — she spat with the most poisonous sarcasm. — You are driven into a corner, you drown out your fear with alcohol and I should be afraid of you? You will be sentenced to life, and for murder, and for frame-up, and for forging documents on my transfer,” the devil himself would now be afraid of the expression of rage on her face. — Do you think I wouldn’t find out?! You pathetic coward! You think I don’t know about your cruelty and selfishness. Oh, Walter, it’s true that maybe something could have worked out for us if you hadn’t been such a pathetic egoist.
She slightly pushed him on the shoulder and Walter rested his back against the door frame, unable to maintain his balance.
Charlotte returned to her sandwiches, and Lina entered the office after Walter. Charlotte felt sorry for this litter, but she herself was to blame for her troubles.
“Lina, come in,” he pointed to the chair. She closed the door and sat down carefully, she saw his mood. It’s better not to disturb him.
— Walter, I…
— There is no need to say anything. I know that you want to take revenge yourself. But you’d better just follow my orders.
“Walter, this won’t change anything.” You are everything…
— Be silent! — He hit the table with his fist. “I didn’t give you the right to act without permission.” It’s just,” he sat down on a chair. — just follow the order. Do you think I don’t know about the plan you wrote? Kill August, you’ve gone completely crazy! — She took the girl by the shoulders. -Have you decided to take all the blame on yourself? “Walter just couldn’t be angry with her anymore, he was too tired.” He looked at her, then at the clock that hung in his room, then again at her.
-Will you really marry me? — Lina moved slightly towards the table.
— Of course, as soon as they leave me alone with questions, then immediately. You and I will go south and live there. We will have a small house and a lot of flowers that you will pick — what a good actor he is, Walter realized this only now.
— Is it true? “There was hope in her voice.
“Of course, darling,” he moved forward and kissed her.
She left, and Walter went to see Friedrich, there is a meeting today. However, the office was broken into without warning.
— What’s happening? — Walter was indignant.
“Search,” Heinrich entered after the soldiers.
“You have no right,” Walter began collecting papers on the table.
— Is it true? — Heinrich showed the search warrant.
— Walter Sachs, please come out.
— What?
“What did you hear,” he added, leaning slightly. — You did the same with August, didn’t you?
