Part nine. Cloud Bread and Cotton Candy

Settings
After breakfast. Robin, Doi and Drake were sitting in the kitchen, thinking about what can they do. “Hm, is there something interesting we can cook?” Doi asked. “We had the pizza toasts, the Purple Twist shake, the cakes, and even Robin's spoiled burrito.” Robin nodded, “Yeah, I do remember that. You were extremely careless when you spilt the sauce bottle.” Doi couldn't help but giggle, scratching his head. Drake was just staring at the clouds outside, silently, looking somewhat calm and serene. “Clouds floating in the sky,” Drake thought to himself, looking outside. “So big, yet don't fall down. Looks fluffy as some pillow, or something like that. I wonder how do they taste like. Are they like cotton candy?” And then, he came up with an idea. He spoke to Robin and Doi, “Hey, I've came up with something interesting! Why don't we make some fluffy food?” Robin and Doi exchanged the curious looks, they were intrigued by the idea Drake gave. He continued, “You try to make the cotton candy, and I…” He then looked at the toast bread, took a slice, cut the bread crumb and started to crumple it. “And I'll try… to make the cloud bread. Because why not!” Doi eagerly nodded, not wanting to wait for the cotton candy and the cloud bread. Robin looked at Drake with a little hint of skepsis, “Heh, why don't we just buy some? And where do you think we can take the cotton candy machine?” “From the attic,” he replied. Robin was startled from this statement, and Drake rushed upstairs. Robin and Doi followed Drake to the attic, curious to see if there really was a cotton candy machine hidden away. As they reached the dusty attic, they saw Drake rummaging through old boxes and searching for something. “Do you really think there's a cotton candy machine here?” Robin asked skeptically. Drake turned back with a triumphant grin, holding up a vintage cotton candy machine. “Voilà! Found it!” he exclaimed. Doi's eyes widened in excitement. “That's amazing! I didn't know we had a cotton candy machine all along!” With the cotton candy machine in hand, they made their way back to the kitchen. Robin couldn't help but chuckle at the unexpected turn of events. “Alright then, let's give it a shot. I've never made cotton candy before, but I'm up for the challenge.” Drake laughed at Robin's enthusiasm, “Okay, of course we all give it a shot. But first, let's try to make the sweet cloud bread, shall we?” Drake took the lead in making the cloud bread, with Robin and Doi eagerly assisting him in any way they could. They gathered the necessary ingredients: egg whites, sugar, and a small amount of cornstarch. Drake cracked open the eggs, carefully separating the whites from the yolks. He poured the egg whites into a large mixing bowl and handed the yolks to Robin, who set them aside for another use. Using an electric mixer, Drake began to whisk the egg whites on low speed until they turned frothy. Gradually, he increased the speed to medium-high, adding sugar a little at a time. The sugar helped stabilize the egg whites and gave the cloud bread a touch of sweetness. As the mixture thickened and glossy peaks began to form, Drake added a small sprinkle of cornstarch. He continued to whisk until the egg whites reached stiff peaks. It took some time and a bit of arm strength, but the trio was determined to achieve the desired fluffiness. Once the meringue-like mixture was ready, Drake spooned large dollops onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. With the help of Robin and Doi, they carefully shaped the dollops into cloud-like formations, using the back of the spoon to create swirls and peaks. They preheated the oven to a low temperature, around 150°C. The cloud bread needed to bake at a low heat for a longer period to maintain its airy texture without browning too much. Carefully placing the tray in the oven, they set the timer and waited anxiously. The aroma of sweet egg whites filled the kitchen as they watched the cloud bread slowly rise and take form. It was a mesmerizing sight. After about 25-30 minutes, the cloud bread had puffed up and turned a pale golden color. They carefully removed the tray from the oven, letting the cloud bread cool on a wire rack. The kitchen was filled with anticipation as they waited for the bread to cool completely. Once cooled, Drake took a piece and marveled at the fluffy texture. The cloud bread practically melted in his mouth, leaving a delicate sweetness behind. It was a success! Robin and Doi looked at the finished cloud bread, amazed at how light and fluffy it turned out. They couldn't wait to taste it. Robin said, “Wow, Drake, you really nailed it with the cloud bread! It looks absolutely stunning, and I can't wait to bite into this fluffy goodness.” Drake grinned with pride. “Thanks, Robin! I'm glad it turned out well. Now, let's move on to the cotton candy. Who's up for some sweet, sugary goodness?” Doi jumped in eagerly. “Count me in! I've always loved cotton candy. It's like eating sweet, colorful clouds. I'm excited to try making it ourselves.” Robin chuckled and nodded. “Alright, let's do it. Drake, do you remember how to operate the cotton candy machine?” Drake nodded confidently. “Absolutely! I've seen it done at fairs and carnivals. We just need to add sugar and watch the magic happen.” They gathered around the vintage cotton candy machine, ready to give it a whirl. Drake carefully poured sugar into the machine's spinner and turned it on. As the machine whirled, the sugar started to heat up and melt, transforming into fine, sugary strands. Doi's eyes widened in awe. “It's working! Look at that fluffy cloud of sweetness. This is amazing!” Robin grabbed a paper cone and held it near the spinning sugar strands, twirling it to catch the cotton candy as it formed. Soon, a heaping, colorful pile of cotton candy started to accumulate on the cone. Drake and Doi watched in excitement as Robin created fluffy, sugary clouds on the cone. Doi couldn't contain his enthusiasm. “This is so cool! We're actually making cotton candy right here in our kitchen.” Drake laughed and replied, “I told you it would be a fantastic idea. And look at us now, enjoying the fruits of our labor.” After filling a couple of cones with cotton candy, Robin handed one to Doi, and they each took a bite. The sweet, melt-in-your-mouth sensation made them feel like they were floating on a sugary cloud. Robin said with a wide smile, “Doi, Drake, this cotton candy is absolutely delicious. I can't believe we made it ourselves. It's pure sugary perfection.” Doi nodded enthusiastically, his mouth still full of cotton candy. “I totally agree, Robin! It's like tasting a piece of heaven. We should definitely make these fluffy treats more often!” Drake joined in the conversation, his face beaming. “I'm glad you both enjoyed it. It's all about trying new things and creating sweet memories together. Let's continue exploring our culinary adventures.” And so, Robin, Doi, and Drake spent the rest of the day enjoying their homemade cloud bread and cotton candy, savoring the joy of their successful kitchen experiment and looking forward to their next cooking escapade. After devouring their fluffy cloud bread and cotton candy, the trio couldn't help but giggle with delight. Their culinary experiment had been a success. But Drake, being ever curious and wanting to prove himself, couldn't resist the temptation to create one more cotton candy masterpiece just for himself. Drake approached the cotton candy machine with determination, ready to show off his skills. He poured a generous amount of sugar into the spinner, eager to create a larger and more impressive cotton candy than before. As the machine whirled to life, Drake watched expectantly. However, to his surprise, instead of a towering cloud of sugary goodness forming, he ended up with a slightly lopsided and small fluffy tuft. Drake scratched his head and glanced over at Robin and Doi, who were watching him with amusement. He couldn't help but feel a little perplexed. “How did you guys make such big cotton candies in almost no time, while I was standing here for almost five-ten minutes, and what I get is only this petite?” he wondered aloud. Robin chuckled and replied, “Well, Drake, it's all about technique and finesse. You need to find the right balance between the amount of sugar, the spinner speed, and the way you catch the cotton candy on the cone.” Doi chimed in with a mischievous smile, “Maybe your hand is just a little bit heavy, Drake. You have to be gentle, like a cloud floating in the sky.” Drake pouted playfully and defended himself, “Hey now, it's not that easy! Making a perfect cotton candy requires skill and precision. I'll get it right on my next try, just you wait!” Undeterred by his previous attempt, Drake decided to give it another shot. He adjusted the sugar amount and meticulously tried to achieve the perfect spinner speed. But as fate would have it, his second attempt resulted in yet another petite cotton candy. The room echoed with laughter as Robin and Doi exchanged amused glances. Robin jokingly remarked, “Drake, maybe you're destined to make bite-sized cotton candies. They're perfect for a quick sugar fix!” Drake couldn't help but join in the laughter, realizing that cooking adventures could sometimes lead to unexpected outcomes. Accepting his petite cotton candy with a grin, he gave it a taste and exclaimed, “Well, even if it's small, it's still sweet and delicious! I guess good things come in tiny packages.” And so, with their cotton candy mishaps and laughter-filled moments, Robin, Doi, and Drake continued their culinary adventures, cherishing the joy they found in creating memorable and comical experiences together.
