Chapter 1. Entrance tests
July 16, 2026 at 11:46 AM
"This feeling. So familiar...When everything breaks down, light goes down abruptly, it becomes cold. I remember this sense, but don't know why. Was it at once? No. Not once. Not twice. More than that... I feel it. But why I don't remember this? Remember..."
The hall is noisy, and there are many applicants who are eager to enter the academy to become one of the best heroes history has ever known! It's all right, each one is quirker than the other. How ironically.
The girl, straightening her short, soft hair, sits in the hall and relax on her chair, disappears in her hoodie. She would like to sit down more free. Not even to sit down, but to lie down. Hand in pockets, leg on leg and it's perfect pose for rest. But it would be more appropriate if there weren't so many people in the room and if there wasn't well-dressed guy with glasses. As soon as she came up and sat down somehow "wrong", he immediately made a remark to her that she did not show respect to others because of her slovenly appearance. This is an entrance exam, not a junk market! It became unpleasant, she wanted to snap back, but restrained herself. There's no need to waste energy on someone like him, especially before the exam.
All the applicants gathered, and a man with an extravagant hairstyle, glasses, and a smile almost from ear to ear appeared on stage. The blonde immediately perked up, even sat up straight and leaned forward a little to get a better look at him.
"You give me the creeps, listeners!", his voice is heard throughout the room. Her ears are ringing, but the girl doesn't pay attention to it and happily claps, admiring the pro-hero.
"That's a Present Mic, isn't it?", she heard a whisper next to her, which was quickly drowned out by a new loud announcement from the hero, which caused a genuine smile and joy on her face. Oh, how excited she is!
"Yeah, he is! I did not think that I would see and hear him in reality, and not through TV or radio!", she decided to join the conversation and the guys were going to continue the discussion together, when the voice of the guy next to her was heard.
"I'm sorry, but you can distract others with your conversations, as well as distract yourself from important information!", he said during a short pause, and then immediately turned away.
The girl felt her fists itch. "Annoying bespectacled jerk", she snorted and adjusted her eyeglasses herself. "Take it easy, Hiro Shirayuki. Take it easy. Exhale and smile".
Folding her hands into a lock, Hiro began to listen carefully to the hero, and as he talked about the exam, the smile on her face became dimmer and dimmer, until all that remained of her was a nervous, slightly stupid thread. "Robots? Level points? ARE THEY SERIOUS?!" — she was ready for anything, but not for this.
Suddenly, the guy next to me jumped up abruptly, raising his hand and holding a piece of paper in his hand. Hiro jumped on the spot from such a sudden movement. — Can I ask the question? The materials that were distributed to us said that we will face four types of villains!
The girl raised her eyebrows and took out the leaflet, which she successfully folded several times at the entrance and put in her pocket, unfolded it and noticed all the information. "Me and my attentiveness...", he says something else about heroes and all that, but at the moment Shirayuki is attracted by his words, which are clearly no longer a question, but... a remark?
"...Enough of mumbling to yourself… It's terribly distracting! If you've come to interfere with everyone, you'd better get out of UA right now!" She followed his gaze and, noticing an ordinary boy with dark green hair and freckles, Shirayuki raised her eyebrows in surprise, and then confusion and displeasure were reflected on her face. "Mumble? I didn't even hear anything! Does he have a quirk of super hearing or super stuffiness?!".
When he finished his speech and sat back down, as if nothing had happened, the girl began to look at the guy as a bully from the street, with whom she fights from time to time. But this is no ordinary bully. In nature, she calls such people "arrogant rich sons" and if it were possible, she would immediately put him in his place, as she learned it on the street. By force. But no, she's a future hero, not a villain! And she's just very excited, energy overwhelms her before the exam.
— You need to be kinder to people and not judge them in front of others. — Hiro, lifting her chin and crossing her arms over her chest, leaned back in her chair, and then darted a glance in the direction of the guy, who just narrowed his eyes, but did not answer. She just waved her head vaguely at that. — Silence is a sign of agreement.
"The exam? A quarrel? Remember... next..."
The exam is about to begin. Hiro stands in front, near the gate. She has no plan, no tactics, she will have to act as always — according to the situation. However, everyone here will act that way, but it's better for her to do it wisely so as not to screw up. "The main thing is not to delay." — the girl takes off her hoodie and ties it on her belt. On the bare arms, you can see a lot of scars, from old to new. Touching her neck, on which a scar can be seen from the right side, which seems to cover the nerve endings, she nervously scratches it. After slapping himself in the face, he quickly and sharply shakes his head. "You can do anything, Hiro! You're a future hero! Show them what you're capable of!"
"Do you want to defeat robots faster than anyone else?", turning towards the voice, Shirayuki noticed a smiling girl with pink skin and hair of the same color next to her. Unusual horns grow from her head, and the irises of her eyes are black, while the eyes themselves are dark yellow. The stranger is slightly taller than her. "You look like you've been in a lot of battles!"
She held out her hand, "Hiro Shirayuki. You have an attractive appearance."
"Mina Ashido! And thanks for the compliment.", she smiled back. — "Your appearance is also memorable. White eyes and hair? And the skin is pale! Do you have a habit of turning into a ghost?", Ashido asked with amusement in her voice, looking at her new acquaintance.
"Huh, if only. But it would be quite interesting!" She snapped her fingers and pointed at it. — "Good luck on the exam."
"Likewise, Hiro-san."
Before they could finish, the start was suddenly announced and the gates began to open. Shirayuki moved from the spot, running inside among the first. She immediately began to look around to find the first "enemy." As desired, a robot appeared a few seconds later. Having found a beam next to the building he destroyed, she took it and was about to destroy it, but they beat her to it and immediately ran on. — Yes, even for me it's too fast! With a grunt, she pushed aside the beam.
Hiro bit her lower lip and started frantically looking around, realizing that she was wasting precious seconds. She sped up. It can be seen that she is about to reach the robots, but someone turns out to be faster and more agile than her, which causes irritation. — "If I delay and can't defeat the enemies in a matter of seconds, what kind of hero will I be in the future?!" — clenching her hands into fists, the girl was about to jump on one of the robots that happened to be nearby, but then she heard a scream that didn't sound like a victory or something else. Turning her head, she noticed a boy who was leaning against the wall, and in front of him was a second-level robot that was about to attack. "You idiot!", Shirayuki shouts at him, running to help. "Run under him!" Under him! "He doesn't hear. "Get under the robot, damn it!" When she gets there, she pushes the guy aside, and she looks at the robotic stinger rapidly approaching her, which hits her with all its might and she flies into the wall. A sharp pain ran down my back, shoulder blades, and the back of my head. Hiro didn't even feel herself fall to the ground.
There was a ringing in my ears, and everything went dark in my eyes. Falling sideways, she immediately felt as if her organs were being tied onto one arm and pulled up so that they would come out of her all together. Something warm ran down her temple and, closing her eyes, she finally gave up. The body stopped moving. My breathing stopped.
"Am I dead? But... there must be something else. But what? Something else. Hiro… Remember..."
The appearance of a zero-level robot. There's no point fighting him. Must retreat. Run away. He appeared so suddenly that there was a commotion and everyone started running in different directions. Shirayuki was no exception. She looks fine, only the tattered clothes and the frozen stream of blood on her temple indicate that she died.
Some buildings are collapsing, and the road is collapsing underfoot due to the killing power of the "villain." "Keep away from the buildings. Away from the buildings." — it's better to run in the open area. You never know if the building above you will collapse or not. This is Russian roulette and you don't want to play it at all, even with its quirk.
As she runs forward, she notices two guys out of the corner of her eye, one of whom was helping the other pull his leg out from under the rubble. The girl ran to help, while hearing the buildings break down, and the robot is approaching. She would be lying if she said she wasn't scared. His fingertips twitch, but Hiro tries to control his emotions, redirecting them to the tasks at hand and putting a more or less confident smile on his face.
After running over and pulling out the unlucky girl together, Shirayuki raised her head when she heard a suspicious sound. Her eyes widened and her breathing stopped. Gathering her strength, she pushed the guys aside, forcing them to move away, and after dark.
"Death. The final one. I can't remember anything.… Thought… I'm thinking… Awake. Awake! Wake up!"
A sharp intake of breath and Shirayuki opens his eyes. She is crushed by debris from the building. Her breathing is fast and painful for the first few moments, and then it becomes easier to breathe. It felt like she'd swallowed a nasty pill, but it was over pretty quickly. Still, my body aches a little. The girl hears voices coming closer and they are clearly scared. And adults. When the debris above her begins to be quickly removed and she sees a light, Shirayuki strikes under one of them to finally force her way out. There was a crunch, and scars appeared on his arm, which immediately healed.
"I'm fine!" Was no one hurt? Hiro exclaimed as soon as she got out from under the rubble. Looking around and noticing that everything seemed to be in order, she pointed her finger up and smiled broadly. Her disheveled appearance, broken glasses and a bloody part of her forehead add to the surreal situation.
Especially if you look at the shocked faces of the two adults and some of the guys nearby who couldn't hide their true reactions. "She should be dead! Or be in a terrible state!" — that's what their faces say. The girl especially noticed the expression on Ashido's face, who waved her hand, saying, "Hey, I'm alive!"
"Are you sure you're okay?", one of the adults asked, helping to get out completely.
— Yes, of course. She's not dead, and she's already fine! — and the very next second, she vomited blood on the ground, which made the adults flinch, and she, wiping the liquid from her mouth, tried to continue assuring them that everything was fine.
Nevertheless, they decided to show the crazy one to the academy's nurse, a Healing Girl who checked on Hiro and did not notice any damage. "I'm fine. She seems to be regenerating." — that was her conclusion when she examined the strange girl, but just in case, she made a healing kiss to make sure. So they let her go, while giving her an energy bar, as if they were praising a small child for being able to go to the doctor without tears and screams.
While on her way home, Hiro was gently swaying to the beat of the music in her headphones. She tries not to be distracted by the pain in her body and unnecessary thoughts, but still some people have time to listen. "I haven’t broken a single robot." - After taking a deep breath, she slowly exhales. Starting to eat the bar, the girl smiles. – “Fuck him! I won’t do it? And okay! I’ll do it next time! Or should I choose high school...”
Soon after reaching the modern building, she raised her head looking at it not to comfortably, not to the memories that arise almost every day. Nearby children run, somewhere in the distance there are teachers who look after them. The other older children run for walks, then come back to rest. Hiro sighed, turned off her earphones, then quickly entered the building and abruptly wound to the left stairway leading to the second floor.
"Ray-chan! I’m back!" The girl rushed into the room like a torpedo. Her energy is still shining. It is like a fireworks display, with fettiles on fire and soon it will explode, leaving behind beautiful explosions.
In the room intended for six people, there is only a tall, elegant girl with long brown hair, black strands and piercing karies. Ray Akiba. She looked at Shirayuki from head to toe, then rolled her eyes and went back to reading the book. I didn’t expect anything else from you.
"There were robots! Oh-oh-so!"- the girl began to gesticulate, sometimes tapping into words. - "And then there was such a huge and tall one! Thirty floors tall! Or smaller? I didn’t count. In short, like Godzilla. And he wasn’t even given points! All they said was to run, that’s it!"
"If you got under it, you would have survived." the girl pointed out with an emotionally-free voice, not distracted from reading. Although, I think you just got caught up in it?
Hiro sighed and rolled her eyes theatrically. - "No, I didn’t get under it. I got caught in the rubble. And before that, I was killed by a robot scorpion.BAM! And I’m dead".
"Understood." - Ray reacts as if everything were normal. Looking at her neighbor again, she noticed her glasses. - "Broken again?"
"Huh? Well..." - She took off her glasses and smiled embarrassingly. - "Damn. Yes. Again. I don’t notice anymore."
"Come on." - The brunette reached out, and as soon as she found her glasses in her hands, she squeezed them into her hands. A little light appeared for a moment, and then, with open hands, you could see that the glasses looked like new. - "For once I think that I should charge you a fee because my fancy on your glasses spends almost every day."
"So you offered to help me! " - said Hiro, taking the glasses and putting them back on. - "But thanks anyway. When I’m a hero and start making good money, I’ll pay you every last yen!"
"I remember. And I hope you remember that if you don’t, I’ll curse you."
"Got it, ma'am!" - The girl stood on the counter humbly, and then, having relaxed, came to her bed and did not have time to settle in it, collapsed her face into the pillow.
A couple of minutes later, there was a tinnitus in the room. Ray looked at it and shut up the book, leaving a bookmark on the page. When she got up, she approached Hiro, took the blanket from under her and hid it with him. After looking at this painting, the girl took out her phone and took a photo of her friend as a memory. Or, as she likes to joke, "for blackmail."
***
A week later, Hiro is playing with the little girl while he is in a block where children under seven are being raised. Sometimes she comes there to entertain the little ones, so that they have a productive day, not just walking through the slums and sometimes doing work or just not bothering the neighbors. The teachers are not against, because that means less work for them. Although, like, such a hyperactive person as Shirayuki also needs an eye.
"Oh, and this scar "- the girl pulled her pants down and showed it on a long, bright scar on her leg. - "I got... As she fought the villain with sharp claws!" - she exclaimed and several children also shouted in fear. She had a smile on her face and laughed at the baby’s reaction. - "Well, I’m joking. but the real reason for the appearance of the scar will not be explained, and then the children will be scared even more or they will try to do the same, and then she will blow off."
"Hiro-nii," - the girl approached her, starting to move around the sleeves of the coffee. - "Will you come to us tomorrow?"
"I will look," - Shirayuki began to pat that on the head. - "I have a lot to do tomorrow, but I’m still with you quite often, aren’t I?"- The girl nodded quietly, then extended her hands upward and yellowed with a joyful laugh, lifted one, beginning to circle around her axis.
Having played with the little girl, Hiro began to walk into her cell. After the exam, she woke up fifteen hours later. For her, it’s a common thing to do - sleep long and hard. Her quirk requires a lot of energy, but where can she get it? From food or sleep. But, due to food restrictions, there is only one thing left to do: sleep. On school days, it’s very inconvenient, but she tries to avoid something like that, namely getting wounds. Especially fatal. Although she does not often cope with this.
Walking through the corridors of the building, the girl jumped up suddenly and turned to her voice. - "Shirayuki!" - she noticed the teacher, who began to call out, waving in her direction. - "You received a letter." - After taking an envelope out of the pocket, the woman gave it to her pupil.
As she rubbed the envelope in her hands, Hiro lowered her head. Her scream spread all over the hallway. - FROM UA! FROM UA! RAY-Y!!! - The teacher closed her ears with a loud scream. She did not have time to reprimand, because the culprit had already escaped towards the rooms.
"Greetings, number 6498."– Shirayuki lowered her head to one side in surprise as Ray placed his hands on his chest, listening carefully to the call. - "Your writing was a good one. You have successfully scored the required number of points and even more." - The girl clutched her palms in a victorious manner, then pointed her fingers at her head. The neighbor just turned a blind eye to it. She herself remembers nights when she helped her friend in studying or found a way to do it. There could simply be no other way. - "But I am hastening to inform you that in a show of force, you scored zero points."
The atmosphere in the room changed dramatically. The girl’s face still shows a smile, but it is already empty, and her eyes, which were like those of a ghost, seemed to have lost their light.
"You didn’t defeat any robot, for which the jury was already about to withdraw your application, but..." - my heart raced furiously because of this "but". - We, heroes, demonstrate not only our power, but also our ability to save those in danger." - On the screen behind the director, there were images where Hiro first saved one entrant, and then there were images where she saved two. In both situations, she died for real but was resurrected within just half a minute. - "Your self-sacrifice was admirable and, to some extent, horrifying. Without thinking, you decided to save the lives of others, forgetting yourself and that it was just an exam."
"So you’re Deadpool." - Ray paraphrased.
"For your heroic bravery, the jury has decided to award you sixty-three points. So I hurry to congratulate you on your admission to UA!"
As soon as the hologram disappeared, Hiro turned to her friend. A smile spread across her face, and then she threw herself on her with hugs. I" got into UA! Ray, can you imagine?!" - after letting go of that one, she started to jump around her heel and clap her hands. - "I got into UA! I got into UA! Yay!"
"So you’re going to be a hero after all. Then you will indeed repay me in the future for all those moments when I fixed your glasses."
"Whew! You’re a fucking miser! Can’t be happy for your friend."
— Why not happy? I’m glad." - still replied Akiba with the same calm voice, while moving the device a little in the side so that Shirayuki did not accidentally tear it down and break it. - "After all, I say you will pay me for my services in the future. Oh. And don’t forget my ghostly services too." - looking at Hiro, she bent her head in her side, realizing that she wanted to be replaced. - "In honor of your admission, this time will be free."
Ray came to her bed, pulled out of the nightstand next to the deck of cards tarō, then sat down and began to melt. - "What are you looking at? Sit down. I’ll read you. For classmates or something?"
"How my school year will go. I hope it’s awesome!"
The brunette nodded and began to deliver cards in turn. She uses a classic three-card game that first shows the past, then the present and the future. The girl pulled out three cards - the tower, the fool, and death. A reversed death. Looking at them, she smiles slightly with her brow, squeezing her lips as if she were reading them. Hiro never understood how her friend managed to do that, but she trusts her in everything, which is why she sometimes makes fun of her.
"Well, you’ve had it rough. Children, fights, deaths, and so on. You know your own life yourself. You are now like a kitten that keeps moving forward without looking. You might fall, you might fly. In short, as always without brains, you’re flying full." This is what Sirayuki shrugged. "And here, the last map. - M... Here you will die, but not physically or morally. Get ready to walk on your hands and grab all your legs."
"Ah-ha!" - The bald spot quite clapped and lost her palm. - "So, it will be a fun year!"
