      — Welcome to the pirate crew, Elise, — the captain said, and after a short pause added: — And now, let’s head to my ship, unless you have any unfinished business left.       Jake looked around.       — Because I’m sure someone will soon realize that I’m a pirate, — he said it as if joking, but there is a grain of truth in every joke.       Elise looked at the few items still lying scattered on the ground and smiled. She had unfinished business, but not now, when she had the chance to be free, even if under the Jolly Roger flag. To her, it didn’t matter. All that mattered was freedom.       The girl turned her gaze to the pirate and said:       — No, I am free and ready to depart, Captain.       Jake smirked and led the girl toward his pirate ship at the pier.       — Do you have any questions, landlubber? — The guy asked the girl.       — Yes, what is your ship like? And who are the other crew members? And also… why did you decide to take me onto your vessel, despite the superstition? And many more questions, — Elise said.       — You will see the ship for yourself soon enough, — the pirate replied enigmatically, — and as for the crew… You are the first, not counting me and my two pets. Regarding the superstition, I don’t care about it and I don’t believe in it.       The young captain paused for a moment, as if lost in thought, before continuing: — In fact, that’s not the only superstition I don’t believe in and have broken.       The crew’s newcomer was about to ask something, but the black-haired youth said something else, interrupting her thoughts with his answer:       — One of my pets. But you will soon understand what I mean.       They walked toward the ship until suddenly a female voice rang out:       — Elise! — And a furious woman in her forties stepped out to meet them, her chestnut hair tied in a ponytail with some kind of ribbon, though the tips were a lighter wheat-blonde. — Where did you disappear to, and…?!       Elise cowered under the woman’s piercing gaze and stepped slightly behind her new acquaintance’s back.       The girl’s mother looked at Jake, not recognizing him as a pirate. Neat appearance, too young: his skin was smooth, without wrinkles and not weathered by the salty wind. He simply didn’t look like a brigand; he looked more like a man of the law. The only thing that remained hidden from the stranger’s gaze was the fierce glint in the pirate’s golden eyes, his thirst for freedom, and his greed for treasure.       The woman asked:       — …and who is this with you?       The newly-made pirate was about to say something, but the young captain said with a chuckle:       — Me? I am Commodore Ans, — he said it as a joke, but the woman seemingly took it seriously, given how she frowned. — The thing is, Elise has broken the law and has been ordered to be executed. Do you know her?       Elise’s mother stepped back, her face contorted in horror.       — W-what do you m-mean e-executed…? — she stammered, while Elise laughed quietly.       — I have received an order from Lord Beckett himself to detain Elise. I shall take her to the dungeon, and later, tomorrow at dawn, she will be executed along with the other prisoners, — the pirate said calmly, making even the girl believe him for a second.       — Tell me, are you acquainted with Elise? — The guy asked.       — N-no, I am not personally acquainted, I-I was asked by her mother to find her and… — the woman began to make excuses.       — Just as I thought, — Jake nodded. — In that case, we shall be going.       And so they moved forward. The girl’s mother remained standing there, staring at the pirates in horror. Execute? Elise? But why? Why had the Lord ordered this? What had Elise done to him? A multitude of questions swirled through her head like a true tornado, and all remained unanswered.       Why Lord Beckett…?       Suddenly, realization struck the woman. Beckett. Lord Cutler Beckett. He had been dead for a long time. He died nearly fifty years ago, killed by pirates. The lady’s face contorted in rage as she practically sprinted after the pair.       She took a fresh look at the guy, finally seeing the pirate in him.       — Pirate! — She screamed, drawing the attention of everyone around. — A pirate is taking my daughter, save us!!!       — What? A pirate? — Exclamations rose from the citizens. They looked around, not understanding whom the woman was talking about.       Jake laughed, grabbed Elise by the hand, and sprinted with her toward the ship, holding his hat with his free hand. At that moment, hearing the cry about pirates, a garrison appeared immediately, blocking the pirates' path.
