Saleh knew how to get his way. Nature itself had gifted him with everything he needed: handsome looks, a keen mind, and a variety of talents. Including acting, which was very helpful in winning over the girl he'd chosen as the victim of a spontaneous experiment. Saleh didn't do any research, didn't try to find something useful for the future. He simply satisfied his curiosity.
"There is no one more beautiful in the world," Saleh whispered inspiredly over her reddened ear. "But I can't be with you every second. When I'm not with you, let this protect you."
Saleh often gave expensive gifts, often jewelry and delicate perfumes. This time, he gave a dagger made of a rare metal, adorned with precious stones and with a large heart on the crossguard. More of a decorative item, but at the same time a symbol that Saleh would always protect her. That's how he presented it. No matter how often Kohaku gazed into his loving eyes, she never once detected a hint of false. Their mutual magical love inflamed her feelings more and more, and no amount of her brother's prohibitions could save her.
A bad feeling, or perhaps simply an older brother complex, prevented Hisui from leaving the couple alone. Time after time, he caused his sister pain with his uncontrollable ardor and loud words, much to Saleh's delight. With skillful words, he prolongs it under the guise of consolation. He teetered her feelings on the edge between reassurance and plunging into utter despair. And the more intense the love, the more unbearable the pain. Saleh waited for its climax. To find out if it would work. If it was even possible.
The nearness of the end didn't cloud Saleh's mind with impatience—he remained calm and calculating. As if sensing how Kohaku' spiria trembling with emotion, he suggested his "beloved" meet him at a certain place at a certain time. He proposed that they elope and marry secretly, so that her brother couldn't interfere, and then all he had to do was resign himself to it.
However, he saw Hisui first. And this time, Saleh didn't put on the mask of a lovesick fool, glaring piercingly at Hisui with a cunning gaze, provoking conflict.
"I knew it…" Hisui seethed quietly.
He didn't know the motives, didn't understand what was going on. Saleh had simply shown him that he truly was a liar.
Hisui attacked in anger. Saleh even let him hit his target, playing his part perfectly.
…He knew exactly when Kohaku would arrive. He'd meticulously studied what was troubling her and what reaction to expect. Saleh had easily protected himself from useless blows, so all his pain and fear were just a game. Worthy of fearing for his life. For her heart to shut down her mind. For fear to consume her and drive her body forward, blinded by sight and hearing. To instantly freeze, realizing…
"Ko… haku…" Hisui said in disbelief, falling, choking on his own blood.
Kohaku tried to speak, her lips moving silently; her voice seemed to have abandoned her. Until it broke through in a scream, a flood of emotions. She looked at Saleh in horror, seeking salvation in him, but was met only with a sharp, merciless gaze.
"Perfect," he said venomously, finishing Kohaku off with emotion.
Saleh literally heard the spiria cracking, breaking apart. And at the same time, the life drained from Kohaku's eyes. She sank to her knees like a limp doll, still staring blankly ahead.
The madman's ringing laughter echoed in the ensuing silence. Saleh derived genuine pleasure. From the suffering of others. From a theory confirmed. Between fits of laughter, he found the strength to say, delighting his ears with his own voice:
"The phrase 'break a heart' never sounded so literal, don't you think!?"
All he wanted to know was whether an ordinary person could destroy spiria without Soma's help. Break it with an external factor…
