Chapter 3

The water stopped. That was Julian's cue. His heart hammered against his ribs as he desperately fumbled with the bedroom window latch, panic making his fingers feel like sticks of butter. He had thirty seconds, maybe less, before Leo emerged, smelling like pine and obsession, ready to re-cage him in their suffocating, gilded life. The bathroom door creaked."Julian, darling? Did you find my robe?" Leo's voice was calm, too calm, radiating from the doorway like a cold draft.Julian froze, his hand still on the latch, his breath hitching. He turned slowly, attempting a calm expression even as his pulse raced. Leo stood in the doorway, damp hair clinging to his forehead, his silhouette framed by the steam billowing from the bathroom. His gaze was fixed on Julain with an intensity that felt like a physical weight."The robe... it's right here," Julain stammered, stepping away from the window and toward the bed, his escape route effectively cut off.Leo stepped into the room, his movements slow and deliberate. "You seemed so preoccupied with the window, Julain. Is the air in here not to your liking?""I just thought it was getting a bit stuffy," Julain lied, his voice barely a whisper.Leo reached out, his hand resting firmly on Julian’s shoulder. The grip was steady, a silent reminder of the control he exerted over their shared world. "We have everything we need right here. It’s safer inside, away from the noise of everyone else. You know that, don't you?"Julian looked into Leo's eyes, seeing the familiar flicker of something unstable and demanding.Julian reached up, placing his hand over Leo’s, not to pull away, but to press the hold tighter against himself. A shudder ran through him, a mixture of terror and a dark, ingrained dependency. He realized then that the latch on the window hadn't been the real obstacle. Even if the door were standing wide open, the labyrinth of Leo's manipulation had built a cage within Julian's own mind."I know," Julian repeated, the words feeling heavy and hollow. He leaned into the suffocating comfort of the embrace, realizing he was his own jailer in a house of beautiful, terrifying shadows.
