Autumn was their favorite time of year, as it was the time when peaches ripened—the essential ingredient for the family pie, a symbol of their strong bond. The evening sun blazed through the orange leaves, casting occasional glimmers of light on the surface of the water where the fallen peaches floated.
Leaving her feet in the cool water, leaving her basket of harvested peaches on the dry ground, Claire walked to a stone under the shade of a tree. She sat on it thoughtfully, enjoying the beauty of nature. The damp hem of her skirt didn't bother her at all.
Veigue came for his beloved. Seeing the basket, he began searching for her with a worried expression. He let out a sigh when he saw her nearby. He quietly approached and sat behind her, not daring to hug her. He was afraid he might break her. Hurt her again… It was enough that she was simply near. To smell her scent, to feel her living warmth—that was a true blessing for him. Without words. Caressed only by the gentle breath of wind.
Though he sat close, Veigue didn't touch her. Only his breath teased her skin. Claire clenched her fist, covering it with her other hand, hiding it from Veigue. She wasn't angry with him. She was gathering her resolve. After all, if she didn't break the icy crust of their relationship now, then when would she?
Claire turned her head toward him, leaning him toward her with a light movement of her hand. She touched his lips… Veigue's eyes widened in confusion, but he didn't pull away. Having calmed down his surprise, he responded to the feelings. Just as easily, Claire guided his arms to hug her.
Sharing a tender smile after the kiss, Claire relaxed, leaning her back against Veigue, resting her head on his shoulder. Veigue only hugged her tighter, pulling her close. He lowered his head so their cheeks touched.
And there was no more magical moment. More peaceful. More eternal…
