Chapter 3: SFIT Institute, meeting the twin girls and the future team.

The three of them left the café, and Tadashi gestured for them to wait a minute. Hana eyed her brother suspiciously but decided not to ask. A couple of minutes later, Tadashi emerged from the café carrying a purple backpack with a white kitten on it—Fiona's. Hana looked at Tadashi questioningly, while Fiona wondered why he was bothering with her backpack at the robot battle. Later, instead of going with his sister and niece to the robot battle, Tadashi drove them to his school, the San Francisco Institute of Technology. Hana: Why are we going to your botanical college? There are robot fights there! (she exclaimed) Fiona: (gently tugging Uncle Tadashi by the robes) Uncle Tadashi, are you sure you're not mistaken? I thought Mom explained to you exactly where we were going. Tadashi parked his scooter in front of Ito Ishioka's robotics lab. Tadashi: I need to pick up something. (he said) He gets off the scooter, takes off his helmet, and heads toward the building, while Fiona looks at her surprised mother. Fiona: (asks) Mom, maybe we should go there? It's only for a few minutes. Hana sighs, takes off her helmet, then gets off the scooter, helps his daughter down, and sets her down on the ground, while Fiona puts on her backpack. Hana: (gives in) Okay. Fiona took her mother's hand and they walked toward the entrance to the institute. They walked down the hallway, and Fiona continued to hold Hana's hand, then looked around with distrust and apprehension. Hana: (asking) How long will this take? Fiona: (thinking) I hope there aren't anyone here. (she thought) Tadashi: Relax, kid. We'll be quick. (he opens the door) Besides, you and Fiona haven't seen my lab. Hana: (sarcastically) Great! I'll go to your nerd lab! Girl: (yelling) Watch out! The girl rushed past Hana and Fiona, causing Hana to flinch and Fiona to hide behind her mother, clutching her hoodie tighter, a hint of fear in her blue eyes. She stopped the bike in front of her workstation, took it off, and hung it on the hanger. She removed one of the wheels, examined it, and replaced it as she left. Hana was curious, while Fiona felt simultaneously uncomfortable, scared, and a little curious. They headed toward the bike, looking around and seeing other students working on their own robotics projects. Approaching the bike, Hana and Fiona saw what was holding the wheel in place. Hana: Electromagnetic suspension. (She said reverently.) Fiona suddenly became curious and lowered her mother's hand, then took off her backpack and pulled out a small magnet. But just as she was about to reach for the suspension, they heard the biker girl's voice. Girl: (Shouted) Hey! Fiona got scared, accidentally dropped the magnet, and hid behind her mother. The magnet then became attached to the bike's suspension. They saw the same biker girl with a helmet standing next to them. Girl: Who are you two? Hana: (trying to say something) I... Fiona: (trying to say something) Well... Tadashi: (explaining) Go-Go, these are my brother and sister, Hiro and Fiona. Gogo removes his helmet and reveals her appearance. She looks to be eighteen or nineteen years old, with black hair with a small purple streak in her bangs. Gogo: Welcome to the botanist's lab. (She said.) Hana: Yes. This is the first time I've seen an electromagnetic suspension on a motorcycle. Gogo removes Fiona's magnet from the suspension and hands it back to her. Gogo: (calmly) This is probably yours. Fiona peeked out from behind her mother and carefully took the magnet from Gogo. Fiona: (hesitantly) Th-thanks, and by the way… does your unicycle suspension with the… magnet work on electricity or something? (she asked). Gogo was surprised by such a question from a five-year-old girl, while Tadashi and Hana just exchanged glances and smiled; they knew Fiona well. Gogo: (smiled slightly) Exactly. Fiona stepped out from behind her mother and looked at Gogo uncertainly. Fiona: (asking) Can I check... your suspension? Gogo just shrugged and walked away from her project. Fiona walked closer, extended her hand with the magnet, and lowered it, whereupon the magnet immediately stuck to the motorcycle's suspension. She then removed the magnet from the suspension. Fiona: (speaking out loud) It instantly stuck to the suspension, within arm's reach. Now she took a step back from the suspension and repeated the same action, and the magnet immediately stuck again. Then she removed the magnet. Fiona: (speaking out loud again) Not bad, one step, and nothing changed. Her magnet works well. Fiona takes another step back and repeats this a third time, and the magnet falls to the floor. She takes a step forward, then half a step back and repeats the same thing, but her magnet tried to attach to the motorcycle suspension, but it still fell to the floor. Fiona: (picks up the red magnet and speaks her thoughts out loud again) So, at arm's length and at one step back, my magnet attaches well to her motorcycle suspension. But at half a step, her magnet works very weakly. (she says) She turned around to see Gogo's surprised look, while Hana looked at her daughter with pride. Tadashi crossed his arms, also proud of her. Fiona suddenly blushed and nervously clutched the fabric of her white sweater. Fiona: (blushing, looking at Gogo) Oh, I... I... I'm sorry, I shouldn't have touched... and I... I'm sorry I talked so much, I was just curious... (stuttering) Hana: (soothing and supporting her) Don't worry, little sister, you were just doing something you were interested in. And that's okay. Tadashi: (supportively) The students at this college are understanding, they're always willing to help each other or listen to their ideas. They also give each other advice on projects and such. (he turns to the students) I'm right. All the students nodded in agreement, and the female students gestured for Fiona to continue, as they liked the way she calculated and thought logically. Fiona didn't expect this, but she felt a warmth in her heart and came up with another idea. She flipped the magnet over to the red side and turned to the students. Fiona: (timidly) You can step back to a safe distance. They nodded and took a step back, and Fiona extended her hand with the red side of the magnet. She felt the motorcycle's electromagnetic suspension trying to push away her magnet. Fiona: (counting out loud) 3, 2, 1. She dropped the magnet abruptly and quickly hid behind her mother; the magnet flew away without hitting the students. Fiona jumped out from behind her mother and walked toward the red magnet, counting out loud. Fiona: (counting out loud) 10, 11, 12, 13. (She stopped.) She picked up the magnet and ran up to Gogo while Tadashi held her backpack. Fiona: (explaining excitedly) The magnetic field from your motorcycle's suspension is too strong for me. It knocked my magnet back thirteen steps. That's so cool! (she said, waving her arms.) Gogo: (smiling) You seem pretty smart for your age. And when did you learn about magnetic fields? (she asked with interest.) Fiona: (smiling) Since I was four. By the way, judging by your clothing style, you like speed and racing. Am I right? Gogo: You're listening carefully too. By the way, speaking of electromagnetic suspension, there's no friction—higher speed. But not high enough. She tosses the steering wheel in the trash. Gogo: For now. (With these words, she leaves.) Fiona turned to her uncle and put the magnet back in her backpack. The three of them approached a stocky African-American man of about twenty-one or two, and Fiona looked a little more confident. Man: (stops Hana and Fiona) Stop, stop. Don't move. Don't cross the line. Fiona and Hana returned behind the warning sign, which they apparently unknowingly crossed. Tadashi: Hello, Wasabi. These are my brother and sister, Hiro and Fiona. Wasabi: (takes off his glasses) Hello, Fiona and Hiro. Prepare to be amazed. Here you go. He throws the apple between two pillars, but it suddenly slices into thin slices. Hana: (gasps, catching the apple slice) Wow! Fiona: (catches the apple slice) It's like paper. (she whispers in surprise) Wasabi flicked the switch, and lasers appeared between the pillars. Hana: (asks) Is that laser plasma? Wasabi: (explains) Yes. Held together by a magnetic field. Fiona: (gasps) I didn't even see them. (her eyes sparkled with interest, and she became lost in thought) If we turn off the lights and use cosmetic powder, then these lasers will probably be visible and glow bright green in the dark. So let's try that now. (she thought) She turned to Tadashi and pulled a compact from her backpack. Fiona looked at her uncle with surprise and confusion, who looked away mysteriously and smiled, as if asking, "What are you talking about?" but Fiona shook her head. Fiona: Tadashi, could you turn off the lights for a few seconds? (She looked at Wasabi.) And make them invisible. (She asked him, and Wasabi nodded in surprise and complied.) Tadashi said nothing and went to turn off the lights, and a second later the institute was plunged into darkness. Fiona opened the compact, applied some powder to her palm, then blew hard, and the powder fell between the columns, followed by lasers glowing in the darkness. A few seconds later, the lights came on in the institute, Hana ruffled her daughter's hair, Tadashi clapped his hands, and the students began whispering. Student #1: (whispering) Oh my god, she's five years old, but she knows a trick like something out of a spy movie. It hasn't even been ten minutes, and she's already surprising me. Student #2: (whispering) I agree with you. It's amazing for a child. And with the magnet and the electromagnetic suspension, I was almost speechless. It's clear she likes it and is interested in it. Fiona just smiled sheepishly at this point, and a second later she and her mother looked at Wasabi, who had put his tool back in its place. Hana: (asking) Wow. How do you not lose anything in this chaos? Wasabi: I have a system. There's a place for everything, and everything is in its place. Gogo: (quickly picks up Wasabi's tool) I need this. Wasabi: (yelling in displeasure and running after her) Don't do this! This is anarchy! Society has rules! At that moment, a seventeen-year-old girl with long red hair, brown eyes, and pink glasses appears, and Fiona hides behind Tadashi. Girl: Excuse me! She pushes a huge metal ball toward the platform. Girl: Make way! (She sees Tadashi.) Tadashi! (She shouts.) She notices Hana and Fiona, and Fiona emerges from behind Tadashi. Girl: Oh my god! You must be Fiona and Hiro! Fiona: (asks in surprise) How do you know my name? Girl: (excitedly and happily) Because, Fiona, I'm your godmother, and I know everything about you and your brother. She started kissing them on the cheeks, and Hana looked at her brother in shock, while Fiona looked at the girl in confusion. Hana: (shocked) What? Brother, explain. Tadashi: I'll explain it to you at home—it's a long story. (He explained, and Hana just rolled her eyes, while Fiona continued to look confused.) Girl: Great timing. Great timing. She pressed the button on the floor and raised the platform. Fiona: (whispering) It looks like an exercise ball. Hana: How much tungsten carbide is in there? Girl: (excitedly) Almost 200 kilograms! Let's go, let's go! She dragged them to her chemistry set and prepared the necessary ingredients. Girl: You two will love this. (mixing the ingredients) A little perchloric acid, a drop of cobalt, a pinch of hydrogen peroxide... (she picked up a blowtorch and began heating her formula) Heat to 225 degrees and... She poured the formula into bottles and sprayed a pink cloud onto the ball, then pulled the switch, and with a flash of electricity, the mixture stuck to the ball, coating it in a pink layer. Girl: Ta-da! Isn't that cool? (she asks them) Hana: Very pink. Fiona: It's my third favorite color! (she said happily) Girl: And that's not all. She walked up to the pink ball and tapped it with her finger, causing it to explode. Hana: (She exclaimed admiringly) Wow! The red-haired girl turned around, covered in pink dust. Girl: (She takes off her glasses) How's that? Chemically enhancing the embrittlement of metal. Fiona: (Admiringly) That was awesome! You have a wonderful talent, raspberry! The red-haired girl froze at the nickname Fiona gave her. Hana looked at her daughter in surprise, then smiled tenderly, realizing her daughter had given her the nickname by accident, and blushed. Fiona: (blushing and stuttering) I-I... Honey: (happily) Wow! My name is Honey Lemon, but you can call me Raspberry. (approaching her and leaning over) Why that nickname? (she asked curiously) Fiona: (blushing) Well... you wear rose-colored glasses... and you have pollen on your face... the color of raspberry juice. (she explained hesitantly and looked away) Honey Lemon was surprised by this description, then smiled at her, and Tadashi approached them. Hana: (asking) "Honey Lemon"? "Gogo"? "Wasabi"? Wasabi: (angrily leaves the lab) I put wasabi on my shirt once. Just once! Tadashi: (explaining) Fred makes up nicknames for everyone. Hana: (asks, surprised) Who's Fred? Fiona: (surprised) I thought I was the only one who gave people nicknames. And who's this Fred? Fred: (behind him) I'm here! Hana flinched, and Fiona let out a startled cry when she saw Fred in a huge lizard suit, then hid behind Tadashi. Fiona: (scared) G-get out of here... you alien from outer space. Fred: (trying to calm her down) Hush, hush, little one. Don't be afraid of me. It's just a costume. My face and body are different. He takes off his mask and shows her his face, and Fiona, surprised, emerges from Tadashi's back. Fiona: Sorry I called you an alien. You're Fred, right? Fred: (smiled) It's okay. By the way, I'm also the college mascot during the day, and at night... He began spinning the school sign he was holding, demonstrating some impressive tricks for Hana and Fiona. Fred: (smiling) Also the college mascot. Hana: (asking) What are you studying? Fred: No, I'm not a student. (sits down on the couch) But I'm a big science enthusiast. I'm begging Honey to develop a formula that can turn me into a dragon at will. (he shows a comic book) But she says it's "not science." Honey: That's true. Fred: Yes, and the shrink ray I asked Wasabi for is "not science" either. Wasabi: No. Fred: What about the "invisible sandwich"? Tadashi: Hiro. Fiona. They both turned to Tadashi, who gestured for them to follow him. Fred: Imagine you're eating a sandwich, and everyone thinks you're crazy. (pretends to eat a sandwich) Gogo: Enough. Fiona and Hana followed Tadashi into the room, while Fred continued chatting. Fiona: (smiling) Uncle Tadashi, where are we going now, to your lab? (she asked him) Tadashi: (waved his hand) No. But first, I want you to meet two more of my friends. Hana: (raising an eyebrow questioningly) Who? They stopped at the closed door, and Tadashi very slowly and quietly opened it, then gestured for Fiona to go first, asking Hana to stay behind. Fiona was surprised, but she went into the room, while Tadashi and Hana waited for her outside. She saw a cozy laboratory, and just as she was taking her fifth step, she suddenly collided with an invisible person and fell to the floor. Female Voice #1: (concerned) How did you end up here, little one? Female Voice #2: (extending her hand) Oh my god, are you okay? Fiona looked up to see a twelve-year-old girl standing before her. She had long, fluffy white hair with a single purple streak. She wore a pink headband with a yellow butterfly on it. Her eyelashes were white, her eyebrows were light, her eyes were light blue, and she had a beauty mark under her right eye. She wore a pink T-shirt with a blue crescent moon, a white sweatshirt, red bracelets on her arms, a dark blue skirt, white leggings, red ankle bracelets, and she was barefoot. She extended her hand and looked at the five-year-old girl with concern. Fiona looked confused, but she hesitantly offered her hand, and the girl helped her up. Fiona: (a little hesitantly) I... I'm fine. Annabelle: (she greeted her) I'm Anabelle, and you? Fiona: My name is Fiona Hamada, and I'm sorry I bumped into you; I didn't even notice you. Annabelle: (smiled) That's not surprising. (then surprised) Hamada? Are you Hiro and T-Tadashi's sister? (she stuttered on the last word and blushed slightly) Fiona: Yes, I'm their younger sister. (surprised) Wait? What did you mean? Were you invisible? (she asks her) Annabelle holds out her hands, revealing her red bracelets. Annabelle: You guessed it. Thanks to these bracelets on my arms. (Now she shows the bracelets on her legs.) And with the anklets I made myself, I can turn invisible with a snap of my fingers. And my sister... Fiona remembered hearing a second female voice. Fiona: Is she invisible now too? Female Voice: (giggling) No, silly, look up. Fiona looked up at the ceiling and saw a twelve-year-old girl. She had long white hair, pulled back into a neat braid with a single red strand, white eyelashes, light eyebrows, light blue eyes, and a beauty mark under her left eye. She wore a white T-shirt with a yellow sun and a black sweatshirt with a white skull on the back. She also wore a red skirt, black leggings, and white ballet flats. She stood on the ceiling, a smirk on her face, looking down at Fiona, who stood frozen in shock. Fiona: (shocked) H-how... did you get on the ceiling? The girl smiled and began to descend, her feet brushing the walls along the way, keeping her from falling. Five seconds later, she was standing on the floor, bowing like a prince. Girl: (looking at Fiona) So you're the sister of those Hamads? (she asks with a smirk on her face) Fiona: (recovering from her shock) Y-yes, that's right. She only just now noticed that Annabelle and this girl were twins. Fiona: (looking at them curiously) So you're twins? You look very much alike. (She remembered something) By the way, how did you end up on the ceiling? (she asked again) The girl took off her shoes and showed Fiona the soles. Mirabelle: (explaining) Thanks to the thin lining on the soles, which I made myself, I can walk on walls and ceilings. And by the way, my name is Mirabelle. Fiona was silent for a moment, and then squealed with joy. Fiona: (admiringly) So you create things like spies do? That's so cool! (she looked at Annabelle) You have powers like the Invisible Man or the Chameleon. (she now looked at Mirabelle) And you have powers like Super Spider-Man. You'd both be superheroes! (she said, jumping up out of nowhere) Mirabelle was stunned by these words, and Annabelle blushed and scratched her head, then Mirabelle shook her head and crossed her arms. Mirabelle: (crossed her arms and grinned) Well, I don't know about that, but if that happens, you, Fiona, would be a good leader for us. (she said, winking) Fiona was surprised by this statement, then clutched the fabric of her sweater in her hands and looked away, embarrassed. Fiona: (embarrassed) I'm the leader, are you serious... I'm just an ordinary girl... (she's interrupted) At that moment, Hana and Tadashi entered the lab, and Annabelle, seeing Tadashi, quickly hid behind her twin sister, a blush appearing on her cheeks. Tadashi: (smiling) Fiona, I see you've found common ground with the twin sisters. (He looked at the embarrassed Annabelle.) Hello, Belle. Annabelle: (blushing) Yes. Tadashi: (introducing them to Hana) Hiro, meet our youngest students in this college, their names are Mirabelle and Annabelle. They both entered here at eleven years old. Hana: (incredulously) Since eleven? Fiona: (gasped in admiration) Since eleven? Mirabelle: (snorted and looked at Hana with displeasure) Why are you looking at me and my sister like that? Just because we're twelve doesn't mean we're stupid. Does that bother you? (she asked rudely.) Fiona looked confused. Hana: (trying to explain to Mirabelle) That's not what I mean, it's just... (she's interrupted) Mirabelle: (irritably taking her sister's hand) Come on, little sister, or our uncle will wonder where we are. (she looked at Fiona) We'll see each other again, little flower. (she said this tenderly, then looked at Hana) Don't you dare think that girls my age can't study here. (she said this with irritation and displeasure in her voice) She and her sister walked out of the lab past a surprised Fiona and a confused Hana, and Tadashi only sighed; he knew Mirabelle's personality. Fiona: (thoughts) She was kind at first, so why did one word from my mother upset her so much? (she thought) Hana: (whispering) What just happened? Continued in Chapter 4: Meeting Baymax, Fiona's ring, and meeting Callagan.
