Evening by the fireplace

Notes:
Winter — the coldest time of year. The winter chill spared no one, leaving traces of its work on the pale cheeks of the townspeople, tinting their skin a deep red. On this seemingly harsh evening, the wind whispered a quiet lullaby for those who sat indoors, trying every which way to keep warm. But not everyone was lucky enough to be home early. For those unlucky few, nature had prepared an ordeal in the form of massive snowdrifts, icy roads, and bitter frost. Among those who weren't so fortunate were our rescuers. As servants of the law, they are duty-bound to monitor the safety of Broomstown even in such severe weather. Fortunately, nothing serious happened, except for an elderly lady who got stuck in a snowdrift and couldn't get out on her own. This, of course, was a relief to everyone Closer to midnight, all the rescuers reached the headquarters, leaving their vehicles in the garage and heading up into the building. They were just in time, considering that almost immediately after, a heavy blizzard kicked up, as if deciding the snowdrifts weren't quite big enough. — Team, how was the patrol? Nothing serious? — Jin asked her friends. — Don't worry, Jin, everything went well, — Poli assured her, shaking the remaining snow off his winter police vest. — We finished everything just in time. He looks out the window, where the onslaught of the blizzard is visible, scattering a white gale that blankets the roads. — "In time" is an understatement, — Amber smiles. The warmth of the headquarters contrasted sharply with the piercing cold outside. As the rescue team began to shed their heavy winter gear, the room filled with the sounds of unzipping zippers and the stomping of boots to shake off the excess snow. A few minutes later, Helly walked in, looking visibly frozen. — Brrr, — he said, rubbing his hands together to warm them, — it feels like the North Pole out there! Even at a time like this, the little rascal manages to joke, which is perhaps for the best, considering his jokes maintain a joyful atmosphere despite the harsh cold outside. Is it cold there? Yes. Is there snow? Yes. That means it's the North Pole, — the little rascal smirks. — Alright, enough about the North Pole or any other poles, — Jin began. — Amber and I will prepare some hot drinks, and you boys go to the common room and get the fireplace ready. — Okay, Jin, — Poli nodded, while Roy simply nodded without a word. — Can I come with you guys instead? — Helly asks with a slightly feigned pout. Amber sighs quietly and says: — Fine, you can help carry the mugs later. — Hurray! — The pilot shouts joyfully and runs toward the kitchen. The girls followed him. — Helly is such a child, — the dispatcher says with a smile before disappearing behind the kitchen door. Poli turns to Roy and asks the elder: — Well, shall we go light the fire? — Yeah, let's go, — the fireman agrees.

The blizzard rages outside, scattering the snow and then snatching it up again with gusts of wind. All the residents of the small but friendly town are sitting at home, wrapped in warm, cozy blankets or throws. The rescuers sit by the fireplace, holding mugs of hot chocolate with marshmallows and warming their frozen hands. Poli, Roy, and Amber have settled on the sofa. Jin is sitting in a beanbag chair, and Helly, wrapped in a blanket, occupies the rug in front of the sofa. Flickering tongues of flame danced in the hearth, casting a warm glow on the faces of the tired rescuers. Steam rose from their mugs, carrying the rich aroma of dark chocolate with hints of vanilla and caramel. Each sip was a pleasant relief from the piercing cold that, only a short while ago, had stung their skin with the icy blasts of the cruel elements. As they sipped their hot drinks, the fire crackled and popped, occasionally sending sparks up the chimney. Outside, the storm raged, but here, in the cozy common room, peace reigned. The quiet hum of conversation, mingled with the soothing crackle of wood, created a sense of tranquility that enveloped them like a warm blanket. Golden light reflected off the polished wooden panels, illuminating the group of people as they relaxed, their exhaustion gradually fading away. And what could be better than an evening with friends? Perhaps only an evening with friends and mugs of hot chocolate.
