Playing Dumb

Later on, trying to push the chilling possibility out of my mind that the doctor could be just as corrupt as Lisa, I went through the same motions of playing dumb when Lisa visited me in the afternoon.
This time her hair was back in a loose ponytail. She never wore dresses, and she didn’t have much color in her wardrobe either. She wasn’t masculine, but she wasn’t that feminine. She was just simple. Simple, sexy… and brutal. Every lesbian’s fantasy and nightmare rolled into one.
As she stood there gazing down at me in a casual, relaxed stance, hands in the pockets of her jeans, I felt that familiar throbbing and need between my legs despite all the hell she had put me through. I pushed any intimate thoughts aside and hoped that the reason she was more relaxed and less suspicious-looking was that she bought my act.
I still had to pretend and hope to convince her that I adored any physical contact she gave me—be it a hug, a kiss, or running her fingers through my hair. I honestly think that if I weren’t so turned on by her, I never would have been able to pull it off. One flash of that sexy smile, and I could start to melt like butter. Lisa’s teeth were perfect, and you could tell they were natural.
“You miss me?” she asked, never bothering to ask how I felt that day.
“I do. But I also want to know that I’ll be safe when I come home. Are you any closer to arresting anyone?”
She looked away for a second, almost as if she hoped I wouldn’t ask, and I even wondered for a split second if she knew that the question was part of my act. But I didn’t have to ask the right questions, did I? One who believed they had been attacked would only be curious as to whether there were any persons of interest yet in their case, just like one who really cared about their spouse would ask how she felt and not just if she missed them.
“No, but we are getting closer.”
“How can you not have anyone yet be closer?”
The irritation came on like a light switch. Lisa did little to try to hide it. “Well, I guess you’ll just have to trust me, Shaylin. I’ve been doing this for a very long time. This people-hunting thing. I find people. They run, but I always find them. And when I do, I make sure they pay for exactly what they should be paying for. I don’t fuck around, dearie. I get right down to business.”
My heart rate sped up.
Uh-oh.
She took a step closer and continued. “You see, I smell a liar like a bloodhound smells a trail. And when those lies eventually catch up to those I’m hunting, and they know they can no longer bullshit me like I’m some dumbass shit kid out of high school, reality starts setting in. They know they can’t hide. They can’t even run, for that matter, especially when there’s no place to run to. So that pretty much leaves them stuck with me, Shaylin, and being stuck with me is something they definitely don’t want to be.”
Fuck!
She knew. She fucking knew.
And I was an idiot for thinking I could fool her.
