Their gazes locked. The air around them seemed electrified, the slightest hint tugging at their souls. And there was no one to stop them…
"You have no lack of impudence," Inanna said, her voice low and venomous, maintaining her composure. "You understand perfectly well that your ridiculous attempts are futile, and your convoluted paths to the heart will lead nowhere. So why do you continue to cherish hope?"
"Asura doesn’t belong to you alone," Sakuya tried to speak calmly, although the sarcasm was evident through the floral notes of her voice. "He is free to choose."
"And he made his choice long ago," Inanna reminded him, adding sarcastically, "Not in your favor."
"Your beauty will not forever cloud his vision. One day he will see your soul. Then he will understand that I am kinder, and my love is more sincere and warmer."
"You're more naive than I thought if you think your kindness is a winning factor in a man's heart. It wasn't just beauty," Inanna said, admonishingly, slowly approaching her rival until she was right there and lifting her head, gently scratching her chin with her nails. "I captivated him. It's just that I'm a better kisser," she leaned in, whispering in his ear, "not to mention so much more."
Blushing, Sakuya waved her hand angrily, freeing herself from both the sharp claws and the seething emotions.
"You can't be sure of that!"
"Oh, not at all," Inanna laughed. Sakuya was so simple, easier to read than an open book. "Your innocence literally screams it. But that's not what Asura needs. You can't even imagine how passion burns within him, and you can't extinguish that fire with one innocent kiss. Only a torrent of skillful caresses can calm it. And what can you do? Accept his embrace shyly, trembling? Smile sweetly and close your eyes, meekly awaiting the action?"
Sakuya remained silent: she had nothing to say. Inanna looked down at the pathetic excuse for a rival, her gaze unsparing. Sakuya didn't dare raise her head, crushed by the knowledge of defeat. She wanted to believe that Asura wasn't like that, that her poisonous words were full of lies, but… Sakuya had seen his passionate dances with Inanna more than once. It was just a kiss, but there was so much in it.
There was nothing left to do but silently turn and leave. As before, she could only look at Asura from afar, scratching her heart with the shards of her dream.
