Chapter 2

Settings
Agent Marlene Hughes finished downloading whatever pictures she could find of Suki Li Akamu. Over the last month or so, she had been combing the internet in search of whatever info she could dig up on the girl, hacking in whenever convenient. She was careful to avoid sites that had alerts wired into their systems. No need to alert anyone unnecessarily. Only with a valid warrant would certain users be notified that the police were looking into their accounts. Besides, Agent Hughes wasn't looking for signs of criminal activity. She was looking because she was fast developing a crush on the girl and was simply curious. The object of her attraction seemed to live a very simple and ordinary life. She did the things most people did at her age. The only unfortunate thing was that she was perfectly straight as far as she could tell. There was no evidence that she was a lesbian or even bisexual, and therefore, Hughes wasn't sure she stood much of a chance of getting her out on a date, especially fresh out of a failed relationship. But that didn't have to stop her from trying, and try she would when presented with the ideal opportunity. The more she saw Suki in the building, the more she wanted to know her and the closer she wanted to be. She couldn't believe she actually went to her apartment building just the other night. It wasn't like her to check out where someone lived just because she was attracted to them. It definitely made her wonder about herself for a minute, but she was more worried that Suki might have seen her. She was gazing up at her floor when she caught a glimpse of Suki approaching the window. She quickly turned and headed down the street, hopefully out of view before Suki could spot her. She couldn't wait to run into Suki again. Not just because she wanted to see the beautiful Asian girl with smooth, flawless ivory skin and silky jet-black hair, and not just because she wanted to learn more about her that she might not have learned online, but because she wanted to see if she could get a sense of whether or not Suki knew what she’d been up to the night before which was nothing short of spying. The kind some would call stalking or voyeurism, even if she didn't have sophisticated cameras or listening devices planted in her apartment—at least, not yet. Agent Hughes enjoyed her job very much. She had a small group of friends and preferred to keep it that way. Less drama, and definitely safer. What she needed was intimacy, and someone who would be there to greet her when she returned from a hard and sometimes shitty day at work. Someone who really cared about her and was willing to put her needs first—or at least on an equal level. Instead, all she got so far were ungrateful bitches that did nothing but complain that she worked too long, that they couldn't handle always being worried about her doing such a dangerous job, and that she was selfish and bossy. This bothered her too, because it wasn't like she went into these relationships without them knowing upfront what she did for a living and that she sometimes worked long and erratic hours. As for bossy and selfish? Nah. Okay, maybe she was a little bossy at times. That was just part of her personality. She had a commanding presence, which made her an ideal candidate as an agent. But she didn't consider herself selfish at all. She went into the break room as she had been doing for the last few days, in hopes of running into Suki but hadn't had any luck until now. Suki sat at the table with a steaming mug before her as she tapped away at her phone. She looked beautiful. Hughes loved the way her dark features popped against her pale skin and the way she was so slim and petite, almost frail. Suki was always dressed comfortably but stylishly. Today she wore jeans with a silky midnight-blue top that had tiny hot pink hearts scattered across it. Suki's beautiful dark brown eyes looked up at her. “Hello.” “Good afternoon,” said the agent, just as an idea hit her. “How is my favorite Japanese girl doing today?” Suki gave a quick smile. “I'm fine, and you?” “I'm great, but I would be even better if you could help me out.” Suki looked at her quizzically. “What do you need?” “I need my computer looked at. I know you're more about recovering info on computers as opposed to diagnostics, but I've been having this little problem I wondered if you could help me with.” “I could take a look at it, but aren't there others that normally take care of this sort of thing?” “There are. They're just not always available when you need them.” “I know what you mean,” Suki said with a knowing nod. “What do you need me to take a look at, and when?” “I'm having trouble getting a monitor to display the computer it's connected to, even though there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the monitor at all. It's actually not really a monitor—it's just a large TV.” “Did you try rebooting the computer?” Agent Hughes shook her head. “Didn't even think of that. When do you think you could head over to my department? I can wait until you get off work if you'd like, and I promise I won't keep you long.” “That would be fine. It will give it time to cool down a little bit outside since I don't drive. I ride my bike to and from work, and it's been super-hot with the heatwave we've been having lately.” “No worries there at all, hun. We can leave together when you're done, and I'll throw your bike in my truck.” “Now that's a deal,” Suki said, relieved she wouldn't have another sweltering ride home. “Catch you later, Agent Hughes.” Agent Hughes would be looking forward to it.
