Rinwell sat quietly, a little apart from everyone else, smiling to herself. Bendable twigs, dry grass, and fluff lay on the ground nearby—Rinwell reached for one, then another, weaving them into a single framework. Her nimble fingers worked skillfully and quickly; it was no wonder she had already woven a good dozen nests for her feathered friends.
Owls rarely built their own homes, preferring natural nests in tree hollows or abandoned nests. But in the forest where the "owl community" had formed, there weren't enough hollows for everyone, and cutting holes in living trees seemed unthinkable. And she wanted to create a cozy home for everyone... So Rinwell worked tirelessly, devising her own system.
She wove unusual nests. Still from twigs, but shaped like tree hollows. She filled the small cracks with grass to prevent drafts and rainwater from seeping in, and used down to create a cozy atmosphere inside. She was generous with the size, sincerely wishing the birds not only to make friends, but also to find a mate, a family. To find happiness, whatever the birds might consider it. Rinwell couldn't decide for them for sure, even though she had long been their friend.
Rinwell continued her work enthusiastically, already imagining a contented bird in a still-unfinished nest. She never considered that the materials should have run out long ago, that it was time to renew them. But miraculously, they never ran out.
While tending the campfire, Alphen and the others watched Rinwell without interfering. They knew how important the owls were to her, how much she loved Hootle. So everyone wanted to help. But Rinwell wouldn't let them anywhere near her. Especially the Renians… Traveling together was already difficult, but fate forced them to accept it. Nests were a different matter, her soul and heart, where there was no room for strangers. However… it was Dohalim who was the first to discreetly slip some fresh twigs under the arm of the captivated Rinwell when he noticed they were running low. Alphen followed suit. Shionne also gave up on the third time. Secretly helping Rinwell became a routine matter for them.
Another nest was ready. Another bird had found friends and a cozy home—Rinwell couldn't be happier. But at the same time, she was overcome with anxiety: the owl family was growing rapidly, and the journey was leaving less and less time. Rinwell couldn't keep up with making nests for everyone...
"Rinwell, dinner is ready," Alfen announced when Rinwell had finished.
In reality, dinner would have been getting cold long ago, but no one dared to distract Rinwell. They knew from experience that it was all futile. So all that remained was to keep it warm. As well as a comrade whose destiny is to become a friend to them all.
Rinwell looked at her creation once more. She noticed a suitable place where the new nest needed to be secured. And only then did she hurry to the fire, where a delicious field dinner awaited her.
