I fear all things that live within this world, And even light itself I cannot bear. I fear that dawn will claim my life unfurled, And leave me carrying emptiness through air. These lines are not of life, nor meant to be; This life itself was never built for us. I fear myself before the night sets free, I fear what shadows in the dark discuss. I tremble for myself, for all who stay, who near, I fear to scare, I fear to fall below, I fear to glance at houses drifting by so near, I fear a Universe too generous. I do not want to lose the one I dearly love, Nor bear the sight of tears upon your face. I fear you too, beloved, and the shove That drives a final nail into our fragile place. A fading bird will rise to flight, And crimson fire will scatter from its hands. I fear the blood—hell’s burning bright… I fear I’ll die on ruin’s altar, as it stands.
