Chapter 15

Settings
“That was quick,” Brynn said as I reentered the house. “Yeah, well, when you discover you have a flat tire under suspicious circumstances, what can you do?” “What do you mean?” “Exactly what I said.” “I’d be happy to look at it, but there’s a storm coming. Better stay in.” “I always check the weather. There was nothing about a storm.” “You know how it is here. Sometimes they sneak up on you.” “Did you mess with my bike?” Her eyes snapped up. “Now, why would I do that?” “I don’t know. You’ve been acting strange.” “Oh yeah? How so?” “Look,” I said, not wanting this conversation. “Can you just look at my bike, please?” Thunder rumbled outside. Brynn gave me an I-told-you-so look. I went upstairs, checked my phone. Nothing. I called the station. That was when the real red flag arose. “We do have a team in Kodiak,” said a detective I knew, “but Detective Cain isn’t on the team.” “What do you mean?” “She never showed. We thought she was there until someone called back asking where she was. We’ve been trying to reach her since yesterday but keep getting voicemail.” “Oh my God.” I lowered my voice. “I need to keep quiet so Agent Welch doesn’t hear, but she’s been acting weird.” “How so?” “She said she heard from Carol yesterday, but gave me some bullshit excuse as to why she hadn’t texted me. Her wife Jenny is supposedly with her sister but it’s been over three days.” The detective snorted in disbelief. “I suspect Brynn once wanted to be with me, but I then met Carol. I wonder if that’s why she doesn’t seem bothered by their absence.” “Hang tight,” he said. “Don’t say anything to Welch. Will you be available at this number?” “Yes.” We hung up. I thought I heard footsteps outside the bedroom door.
