Chapter 13

I pedaled without knowing where to go. The weather was gorgeous, though, and I wasn’t in a hurry to return home.
Eventually, I’d run out of steam.
Please be home,Carol, I silently begged as I approached the driveway.
Inside, the TV was on but the room was empty.
“Hello?” I called.
No answer.
I checked the garage. Only Brynn’s vehicle.
I went to get water from the kitchen. Brynn appeared from the bathroom.
“Hey there. How you doing?”
“Well, it sure would be nice if I could hear from my girlfriend.”
“I just did not too long ago.”
I stared. Pulled out my phone.
“She was pressed for time,” Brynn explained. “She only had time to contact me because she needed info about the case. She said she’ll contact you tomorrow if she can’t today.”
“I don’t understand,” I said. “Why couldn’t she text me too?”
“It’s a critical case. If I could tell you more, it would make sense. But you know we can’t discuss open investigations.”
“So she’s alright?”
“She’s fine.”
“I still don’t get it,” I said. “And Jenny?”
“Tomorrow. For now, it’s just you and me.”
Exactly what I was afraid of.
